Interview with Cynthia Venables

In her July 3, 2013 interview with Martha Manning, Cynthia Burris Venables shares her experiences at Winthrop from 1985-1989, as well as her career teaching English. Discussed is Venables coursework as an English major and the rigor of her studies. Additionally, Venables talks about Latin and Biology courses and who her favorite professors were. Venables details what it is like teaching in the 21st Century, her opinions on technology and teaching, and her accomplishments as an educator. Interview with Hope Weatherly

In her May 22, 2013 interview with Martha Manning, Hope Weatherly detailed her thoughts and memories at Winthrop from 1970-1976. In particular, Weatherly discusses the evolution of her studies at Winthrop, starting as a music major then graduating with a degree in education. Weatherly recalls her opinions on University presidents, professors, and food. Weatherly concludes her interview by discussing her career as a social worker and the challenges she faced in her profession. Interview with Jeuel Esmacher Bannister

In her January 20, 2015 interview with Michelle Dubert-Bellrichard, Jeuel Esmacher Bannister details her time at Winthrop from 1940-1944. Shared are the memories of professors in the music department, her opinions on the expectations of students, and going to school during WWII. Esmacher Bannister recalls stories of the Army Air Corps Cadets on campus, and the courses offered by the U.S. government that led Esmacher Bannister to a career as a Japanese and Russian cryptographer. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

Interview with Dennis Stamper

In his January 12, 2015 interview with Michelle Dubert-Bellrichard, Dennis Stamper shares his memories of being one of the first male, day students from 1969-1972. Stamper details his studies and professors from the Philosophy and Religion Department, as well as the Psychology Department. Stamper includes his perception of the atmosphere at Winthrop during a time of great change in the country, and how that experience coupled with his work in the Wesley Foundation and the influence he received from professors paved the way for he currently lives his life. Stamper concludes his interview detailing his studies and careers after Winthrop. Student Reactions to Professor Use of Facebook

Mazer, Murphy and Simonds (2007) recently demonstrated that high self-disclosure, compared to low self-disclosure, on a fictitious professor's Facebook profile was related to students' expectations of a positive classroom environment and high levels of motivation. These findings raise the question of whether all types of self-disclosure would have the same effect. This study examined college students' perceptions of specific ways that professors might use Facebook. We created six Facebook profiles for a fictitious male professor, each with a specific emphasis: Republican, Democrat, religious, family- oriented, socially oriented, or professional only. While viewing a printed version of one of the randomly distributed profiles, participants responded to questions that assessed their perceptions of the professors' teaching ability, classroom demeanor and appropriateness of self-disclosure, as well as their own Facebook use. Students responded most negatively, but sometimes with greatest interest, to professors' posting of social and political information. Appropriate use of Facebook, including professional and family information, increased students' respect for the professor and his classroom. These findings could be very helpful in guiding professor Facebook use.

Walter B. Roberts Collection - Accession 485

This collection consists of black and white photographs autographed by the entertainers who performed at Winthrop College as part of the institution’s Artist Series program, a photograph of the Winthrop College Poetry Society including Dr. David B. Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop, and photographs of Walter B. Roberts and other Winthrop College Professors as well as visiting instructors from Julliard School of Music. Artists include Jasha Heifetz, Jan Peerce, Will Rogers, Arthur Rubenstein, Risë Stevens, Vienna Choir Boys and many others.

Nolan Pliny Jacobson Papers - Accession 842

The Nolan Pliny Jacobson Papers consist of manuscripts, articles, book reviews, photographs, and correspondence largely related to his philosophical writings, projects, and travels. The correspondence comprises the largest part of the collection and his correspondents are mostly with philosophy and religion professors from all around the world (mostly the Far East) which offers a valuable source on academic life and professional relationships.
