Mary E. Frayser Papers - Accession 1

The Mary E. Frayser Papers consists of correspondence, speeches, reports, clippings, minutes, histories, family histories, constitutions and bylaws, membership lists, program notes, photographs, and other papers, relating to her work with the South Carolina Extension Service (1912-1940) Winthrop College, her involvement with the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1935-1952), the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs (1926-1952), the South Carolina Status of Women Conference (1945-1952), the South Carolina Division of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) (1929, 1935-1949), the South Carolina Interracial Institute (1938-1942), the South Carolina Division of the Southern Regional Council (1944-1951), and the South Carolina Conference of Social Work (1936-1967). There are also papers relating to Frayser’s efforts to promote social and economic legislation and participation by women in public affairs and her interest in libraries and work in the movement for the support of public libraries in South Carolina (1925-1968). Correspondents included G.H. Aault, Evan Chesterman, Wil Lou Gray, Sarah Hughes, Christine South Gee, and Maude Massey Rogers. This collection is a good source of women’s club activities in the twentieth century. Important areas of research would include the way club activity affected social and economic legislation in the state and the various forces involved in the movement for state tax supported libraries. While the papers do range from 1841 to 1953, the greater bulk of the papers extend from the early 1930s to about 1947. Since the work of the various women's club organizations were so inter-related, a researcher working with the papers of a particular organization for a particular time span should consider the Frayser papers of all other organizations. Juanita H. Neely Papers - Accession 6

The Juanita H. Neely Papers consist of correspondence, autobiographical and biographical data, speeches, radio talks, clippings, photographs, and articles mainly relating to her work with the South Carolina Home Demonstration Extension Service. There is also family history material relating to the Neely family. This collection is a good source of information concerning the South Carolina Home Economics Extension program in the first half of the twentieth century. While the papers range from 1911 to about 1970, the more valuable and greater part of the collection extends from the mid-1920s to 1957, when Juanita Neely rose from a county home economics extension agent to the State Demonstration Agent. The collection contains many of her speeches, radio talks and articles made during this period; the reference material that she used for her speeches; letters of appreciation from agents and others upon her retirement; and materials relating to the Winthrop-Clemson controversy in 1955 concerning the location of the Home Economics Extension Program. There is also biographical material, award notices, and some correspondence dating after Juanita Neely's retirement from the Home Economics Extension Program. Knox-Wise Family Papers - Accession 591

The Knox-Wise Family Papers includes a land grant issued to John Knox in 1768; diaries written by Dr. John Knox [1792-1859] covering the 1840s and 1850s; James N. Knox [1806-1880] covering 1859-1880; and William D. Knox [1847-1928] covering 1869-1928; indentures, deeds, receipts, court summonses and other papers of Hugh Knox [1757-1821], sheriff and justice of the peace in Chester County, South Carolina (ca. 1780s and 1790s); correspondence of James N. Knox, correspondence, and other professional papers of Dr. John Knox; correspondence, and other papers of William D. Knox, Superintendent of Education in Chester County from 1896-1928. Papers of various other members of the Knox and Wise families including Hugh Boyd Knox [1814-1886], Robert Knox [1796-1879], Sally Knox Wallace [1803-1901], Alexander Walker Wise, and Emmie R. Knox [1885-1969]; family histories of the Knox, Wise, Dunlap, Gaston, and Wilks families; church histories, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Also included are three published volumes of the United Confederate Veterans Minutes of the 21st (1911) and 25th (1915) Annual Meeting and Reunion; and the minutes of the annual reunion of the South Carolina Division of the United Confederate Veterans (1921-1927).

Thomas Belue Collection - Accession 35 - M11 (21)

The Thomas Belue Collection consists of the diary of Thomas Belue of Union County, South Carolina. He enrolled as a private in the Confederate Army in Co. F, Captain C.W. Boyd’s , 15th SCV. The diary covers August, 1861 to September, 1863, and May 1864. Belue describes battles fought in South Carolina, Georgia,Tennessee, and Virginia, mileage covered, camp life and events that occurred during his time in the army. The collection also includes biographical information, genealogical information, a partial transcript of the diary, and copies of Belue’s military records. In addition there is a tintype in a case of Belue in his uniform, two copies of the tintype, and photographs of his gravestone at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County, South Carolina.

Chester Genealogical Society Records - Accession 257 - M113 (145)

The Chester Genealogical Society Records consist of typescript material of writings and publications that covers mainly Chester County, SC history and genealogy from the 18th century to the 20th century. The collection includes information on covenanters, lists of Chester county American Civil War soldiers, Obadiah Hardin, Revolutionary War Lieut. Col. John R. Culp, Rev. Samuel McCreary, Mrs. M.A. Smith and the Smithton Lumber Co in Smithton, Arkansas, the Kulp family, Matthew Elder, Jr., Rev. Josiah Henson, the Gaston family, the Murphy family, Confederate Capt. G.L. Strait’s Company-6th regiment, Company B during the American Civil War, the McClure family and Revolutionary War Capt. John McClure, and recollections of Chester, South Carolina.

Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31

The Episcopal Church Home For Children Records are a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) The Episcopal Church Home was established in 1850 in Charleston, S.C. for orphan girls and was chartered by the S.C. General Assembly in 1852. The collection consists of a history, minutes, reports of the annual meetings, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, newsletters (both bound and unbound), and photographs.

John S. Walton Reminiscence - Accession 281 - M120 (153)

The John S. Walton Reminiscence describes his experiences as a Union soldier in the Civil War, describing campaigns in Kentucky and Tennessee. Also included is some genealogy material relating to the Walton family. John S. Walton (1841-1924) was born in London, England and sailed to America landed in Louisville, KY on July 20, 1860. On September 23, 1861 he enlisted in the 15th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and served in the Union army for three years and four months. He was mustered out of serve on January 14, 1865.

Minnie Lee Garrison Papers - Accession 291 - M124 (157-158)

The Minnie Lee Garrison Papers consist of genealogy materials relating to the Oates and Cherry families; letters and a poetry journal kept by Minnie Lee Garrison (1882-1942) while a student at Winthrop (Class of 1905); newspaper clippings concerning Ms. Garrison who was the first home extension agent in York County; survey or map of a tract of land in Rock Hill that was owned by a member of the Oates family; and other genealogical records.

Walter Caswell Sullivan Papers - Accession 201 - M88 (112)

The Walter Caswell Sullivan Papers consist of correspondence; bills of sale; a biographical sketch of Edward Walter Hall (1859-1949), pioneer educator of Rock Hill; a journal (1912-1915) of the Eats Club in Rock Hill; and war ration books. Most of the correspondence concerns a John H. Allen of Chester and subjects include the health and financial affairs, the shooting of a doctor, Hall family genealogy, and business transactions. The Eats Club's members were Julia Cork, Eva Fewell, Josie Hall, Anne Claire Hutchison, and Susan Steele.

William Joseph Miller Civil War Reminiscence - Accession 41 - M16 (26)

The collection consists of a photocopy of a typescript account of William Joseph Miller’s experiences as a soldier in the Confederate army, 12th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers detailing his role in campaigns in South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Also included is a genealogy of William Joseph Miller’s family with his dates of birth and death and a photograph of Miller.

The Thomas Spratt Memoir consists of a typescript account titled Recollections of the Spratt Family, detailing the history of the Spratt family of York County, South Carolina from the arrival in America of Thomas Spratt from County Down, Ireland, in 1740 to 1876.

The Family and Church Records consist of photocopies of records compiled by Mrs. W.H. Hamilton, Mrs. Fred C. Laurence and Mrs. L.F. Abernethy for the Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The collection includes mostly genealogical information including a history of the Crawford family, Reid family bible records, Roach family bible records, Joseph Palmer Moore obituary, Moore family chart, Andrew Jackson, Sr. and Elizabeth Jackson monument, Commission from Gen. Francis Marion to Captain James Witherspoon, Witherspoon family records, Alexander Love biographical information, and a cemetery list of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Ida Crawford Stewart Papers - Accession 487

The Stewart Papers consist of correspondence, newspaper articles, photographs, financial records, and other papers, relating to Stewart’s family history as well as such subjects as slavery, the American Civil War, Reconstruction in the South, and Mrs. Stewart’s professional career.

Boulware Family Papers - Accession 102

The Boulware Family Papers consist of photocopies of a plantation journal (302 pages) kept by Thomas McCullough Boulware I (1829-1889) and a genealogy of the Boulware family written by James Richmond Boulware II of Lakeland, Florida, in 1948. The journal concerns the Blackstocks Plantation in Chester County, South Carolina and subjects include the planting of crops and farming of land; family events, such as deaths, births and marriages; family travel and vacations; church affairs, including the local temperance league; land sales; free black and northerners in Chester County after the Civil War.
