Undergraduate Scholarship at Winthrop University 2012 Book of Abstracts

Winthrop University proudly presents the first Undergraduate Scholarship at Winthrop University Book of Abstracts. Building off the nine-year tradition of producing abstract books for students in the College of Arts and Sciences, University College is now creating this book to present the scholarship occurring throughout all five academic colleges in the university: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Business Administration (CBA), College of Education (COE), the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) and University College (UC). In addition to the research abstracts, we are using the book to document the students who have completed Honors Theses, applied for Nationally Competitive Awards, and were selected as McNair Scholars.

Dorothy Perry Thompson Papers - Accession 1352

Dr. Dorothy Perry Thompson was a Winthrop professor of English and an accomplished poet and writer. As well as teaching in the English Department, Dr. Thompson also coordinated the African American Studies program which she helped found. The Dorothy Perry Thompson Papers consists of her poems and writings, drafts, research, notes, contract agreements, awards and certificates, speaking engagement flyers and records, thank you letters, and promotion and tenure records.

Rock Hill Music Club Records - Accession 535

The Rock Hill Music Club Records consist of correspondence, an annual report, numerous awards, news clippings, yearbooks, conventions programs, musical programs, scrapbook pages, presidents’ reports, and magazines relating to the Rock Hill, SC Music Club.

Jimmie E. Nunnery Family Papers - Accession 939

The Jimmie E. Nunnery Papers contains records relating to Jimmie Nunnery’s career as a professor at USC-Lancaster. Included are correspondence, information about the scholarship program, fund raising, and the Lancaster County Educational Foundation, USC-Lancaster publications, promotion and tenure, indoor and outdoor recreation complexes, salary, building plans, committees, Medford Library, public relations, news releases, reports, conferences, expense reimbursement, teaching awards, faculty, newspaper clippings related to USC-Lancaster, and papers relating to teaching. The collection also contains personal papers, papers relating to early education, higher education, the S.C. National Guard, and the S.C House of Representatives, legal documents, various family papers, certificates, photographs, publications, general newspaper clippings, memorabilia, calendars, and various other materials.

Mary Eva Hite Papers - Accession 187

The Mary Eva Hite Papers consists of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, family history data, photographs, awards, scrapbooks, and other records relating to Mary Eva Hite’s career as an educator and prominent South Carolina public servant. The photograph file provides a visual record of South Carolina elementary school life in the first half of the twentieth century. Correspondence relates to Dr. Hite’s many career activities, including her 1970 correspondence highlighting her work promoting the welfare of senior citizens. The speeches focus on her work with the aged, her travels abroad, and acceptances for awards presented to her by educational and civic organizations. Newspaper clippings provide information concerning awards presented to Dr. Hite and chronicle the advances in education made by the state of South Carolina. Scrapbooks relate to college friends and Dr. Hite’s work with Delta Kappa Gamma. There are also records relating to teacher retirement in South Carolina.

The Come-See-Me Festival Records consist of papers, photographs, meeting minutes, scrapbooks, media kits, publicity kits, awards, applications, invitations, bylaws, guidelines, histories, correspondence, promotions and advertisements, posters, and memorabilia from the Come-See-Me Festivals from the 1980s to 2013.

Janie Rice Papers - Accession 37 - M12 (22)

The Janie Rice Papers consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, letters of appreciation, and certificates of awards concerning her career as a teacher at the Winthrop Training School, her work with the Baptist Church in Chester, SC and her establishment of a Janie Carroll Rice scholarship at Winthrop.

Marguerite Dawson King Papers - Accession 280

Mrs. Marguerite Dawson King (1901-1979) was a very active and civic minded woman and the collection of her papers attests to the valuable contributions which can be made by women and by senior citizens. The King Papers are a valuable source of information on women in politics and on the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, bylaws, reports, agendas, yearbooks, handbooks, newsletters, brochures, speeches, legislative bills, program notes, newspaper clippings, awards, and certificates concerning Mrs. King’s activities as chapter chairman and assistant state director of the AARP; as district chairman of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; as the first woman County Chairman of the democratic party in S.C. and as a member of the Democratic Women’s Council of S.C., the York County Democratic Women’s Club, Partners of the Americas, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Also included in the collection is information on the development of the city of Rock Hill, S.C.

The Rock Hill Music Club Records consists of correspondence, yearbooks, and programs of the meetings, convention programs, numerous awards, newspaper articles, sheet music, presidents’ reports, handbooks, constitutions, photographs, and scrapbooks pertaining to the Rock Hill, SC club.

Women's Club of Rock Hill Records - Accession 219

The Women's Club of Rock Hill's mission is to further the cultural, educational, and social interest of its members and to promote interest in Rock Hill’s civic development and welfare. The Women's Club of Rock Hill Records consist of constitutions and bylaws, histories, minutes, reports, correspondence, memoranda, program notes, brochures, newsletters, membership lists, yearbooks, questions, certificates, awards, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The records also relate to the thirteen affiliated clubs comprising the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill: Amateur Arts, Arts Appreciation, Book Discussion, Book Lovers, Crafts, Hearthstone, Hermitage, Home Study, Lantern, Literary, Outlook, Palmetto, and Politeia, and to other records for the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Club and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Records of various organizations not directly related to the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill are also included, such as the Tri-County Parents Without Partners, the Rock Hill Community Council, the Rock Hill Model Cities Commission, the Rock Hill Senior Center, and the South Carolina Conference on the Status of Women.

Lucile Kathryn Delano Papers - Accession 509

The Lucile Kathryn Delano Papers consist of correspondence relating to Dr. Delano, Hallet Abend, and Virgilia Peterson (Princess Sapieha of Poland), an account of her trips to Europe and Mexico City, honors and awards she received, a dissertation presented to the Board of Graduate Studies at Washington University, notes on projected research on William Cullen Bryant, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and family photographs.
