Thomas Belue Collection - Accession 35 - M11 (21)

The Thomas Belue Collection consists of the diary of Thomas Belue of Union County, South Carolina. He enrolled as a private in the Confederate Army in Co. F, Captain C.W. Boyd’s , 15th SCV. The diary covers August, 1861 to September, 1863, and May 1864. Belue describes battles fought in South Carolina, Georgia,Tennessee, and Virginia, mileage covered, camp life and events that occurred during his time in the army. The collection also includes biographical information, genealogical information, a partial transcript of the diary, and copies of Belue’s military records. In addition there is a tintype in a case of Belue in his uniform, two copies of the tintype, and photographs of his gravestone at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County, South Carolina.

Walter B. Roberts Collection - Accession 485

This collection consists of black and white photographs autographed by the entertainers who performed at Winthrop College as part of the institution’s Artist Series program, a photograph of the Winthrop College Poetry Society including Dr. David B. Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop, and photographs of Walter B. Roberts and other Winthrop College Professors as well as visiting instructors from Julliard School of Music. Artists include Jasha Heifetz, Jan Peerce, Will Rogers, Arthur Rubenstein, Risë Stevens, Vienna Choir Boys and many others.

The Jimmie E. Nunnery Papers consist of personal correspondence, legal papers, financial papers, compositions of Iva Jordan Nunnery, genealogical papers, historical sketches of Landsford Canal, of General W.R. Davie and of Fort Lawn, papers relating to South Carolina Volunteers of the Confederate Army and Revolutionary soldiers, newspaper clippings, photographs and various papers relating to members of the Nunnery family of Chester County.

Dow, Nyanaponika Mahathera, and many other distinguished philosophers of the Western World.

The Grace Beacham Freeman Papers consists of records concerning her career as a poet in the 1970s and the early 1980s. During this time she worked as a poet therapist and as a poet in the Rock Hill area schools. Also included in the collection are personal papers and copies of many of Mrs. Freeman’s poems.

There are also papers relating to the Cantwell family, deaths of various family members, travel, Winthrop College, the Internal Revenue Service, interior decorating, clubs and organizations, and the Roman Catholic Church.

Marguerite Dawson King Papers - Accession 280

Mrs. Marguerite Dawson King (1901-1979) was a very active and civic minded woman and the collection of her papers attests to the valuable contributions which can be made by women and by senior citizens. The King Papers are a valuable source of information on women in politics and on the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, bylaws, reports, agendas, yearbooks, handbooks, newsletters, brochures, speeches, legislative bills, program notes, newspaper clippings, awards, and certificates concerning Mrs. King’s activities as chapter chairman and assistant state director of the AARP; as district chairman of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; as the first woman County Chairman of the democratic party in S.C. and as a member of the Democratic Women’s Council of S.C., the York County Democratic Women’s Club, Partners of the Americas, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Also included in the collection is information on the development of the city of Rock Hill, S.C.

Descendants of these families have settled in Chester County and other regions of the S.C. piedmont district. The collection also includes church histories and/or cemetery records for Fishing Creek church, Hopewell Baptist Church, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, and Purity Church; and an autobiography of Reverend A. M. Cartledge who served as minister of many churches in central and western S.C.
