Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) are short DNA sequences generated by sequencing the transcribed cDNAs coming from a gene expression. They can provide significant functional, structural and evolutionary information and thus are a primary resource for gene discovery. EST annotation basically refers to the analysis of unknown ESTs that can be performed by database similarity search for possible identities and database search for functional prediction of translation products. Such kind of annotation typically consists of a series of repetitive tasks which should be automated, and be customizable and amenable to using distributed computing resources. Furthermore, processing of EST data should be done efficiently using a high performance computing platform. In this paper, we describe an EST annotator, EST-PACHPC, which has been developed for harnessing HPC resources potentially from Grid and Cloud systems for high throughput EST annotations. The performance analysis of EST-PACHPC has shown that it provides substantial performance gain in EST annotation.

This paper presents new methodology towards the automatic development of multilingual Web portal for multilingual knowledge discovery and management. It aims to provide an efficient and effective framework for selecting and organizing knowledge from voluminous linguistically diverse Web contents. To achieve this, a concept-based approach that incorporates text mining and Web content mining using neural network and fuzzy techniques is proposed. First, a concept-based taxonomy of themes, which will act as the hierarchical backbone of the Web portal, is automatically generated. Second, a concept-based multilingual Web crawler is developed to intelligently harvest relevant multilingual documents from the Web. Finally, a concept-based multilingual text categorization technique is proposed to organize multilingual documents by concepts. As such, correlated multilingual Web documents can be gathered/filtered/organised/ based on their semantic content to facilitate high-performance multilingual information access.

Open-data has created an unprecedented opportunity with new challenges for ecosystem scientists. Skills in data management are essential to acquire, manage, publish, access and re-use data. These skills span many disciplines and require trans-disciplinary collaboration. Science synthesis centres support analysis and synthesis through collaborative 'Working Groups' where domain specialists work together to synthesise existing information to provide insight into critical problems. The Australian Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (ACEAS) served a wide range of stakeholders, from scientists to policy-makers to managers. This paper investigates the level of sophistication in data management in the ecosystem science community through the lens of the ACEAS experience, and identifies the important factors required to enable us to benefit from this new data-world and produce innovative science. ACEAS promoted the analysis and synthesis of data to solve transdisciplinary questions, and promoted the publication of the synthesised data. To do so, it provided support in many of the key skillsets required. Analysis and synthesis in multi-disciplinary and multi-organisational teams, and publishing data were new for most. Data were difficult to discover and access, and to make ready for analysis, largely due to lack of metadata. Data use and publication were hampered by concerns about data ownership and a desire for data citation. A web portal was created to visualise geospatial datasets to maximise data interpretation. By the end of the experience there was a significant increase in appreciation of the importance of a Data Management Plan. It is extremely doubtful that the work would have occurred or data delivered without the support of the Synthesis centre, as few of the participants had the necessary networks or skills. It is argued that participation in the Centre provided an important learning opportunity, and has resulted in improved knowledge and understanding of good data management practices.

The use of a web Health Portal can be employed not only for reducing health costs but also to view patient's latest medical information (e.g. clinical tests, pathology and radiology results, discharge summaries, prescription renewals, referrals, appointments) in real-time and carry out physician messaging to enhance the information exchanged, managed and shared in the Australian healthcare sector. The Health Portal connects all stakeholders (such as patients and their families, health professionals, care providers, and health regulators) to establish coordination, collaboration and a shared care approach between them to improve overall patient care safety. The paper outlines a Health Portal model for designing a real-time health prevention system. An application of the architecture is described in the area of web Health Portal.

Nowadays web services technology is widely used to integrate heterogeneous systems and develop new applications. In this paper, an application of integration of hotel management systems by web services technology is presented. The Group Hotel Integration Reservation System (GHIRS) integrates lots of systems of hotel industry such as Front Office system, Property Management system, Enterprise Information System (EIS), Enterprise Information Portal system (EIP), Customer Relationship Management system (CRM) and Supply Chain Management system (SCM) together. This integration solution can add or expand hotel software system in any size of hotel chains environment.

The aim of this paper is it to identify whether Australian media companies moved online with a clear business model in mind or in an ad-hoc manner. In-depth interviews were conducted with four Interact media managers from two large Australian media organisations. All four had been involved in Web publishing from its early stages and had extensive knowledge of the development of Web publishing in the industry. The interviews focused on the period around the mid 1990's when the early development of the organisations' websites took place. We also review an analytical approach of examining narratives from research interviews developed by Davidson (Davidson 1997) and Mishler (Mishler1986a, 1986b).

Obtaining high quality content in an e-learning portal is critical to maximise the learning experience. For e-learning portals the content specialists are the publishers. Typically, publishers are nominated by portal administrators to make their content available to instructors. Instructors subsequently customise the portal by selecting content according to their requirements. The choice of content is limited to that provided by the publishers. This is a rigid system owing to the fact that instructors do not have access to an exhaustive range of content. We propose a system based on XML Web services which can be adopted by publishers in adherence with a number of emerging Web standards including SOAP and UDDI to disseminate their content. This system can be leveraged by portals to preview and subsequently acquire content which best suits the requirements as determined by instructors.
