A class of new conjugated copolymers containing a donor (thiophene)−acceptor (2-pyran-4-ylidene-malononitrile) was synthesized via Stille coupling polymerization. The resulting copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, GPC, TGA, and DSC. UV−vis spectra indicated that the increase in the content of the thiophene units increased the interaction between the polymer main chains to cause a red-shift in the optical absorbance. Cyclic voltammetry was used to estimate the energy levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the band gap (Eg) of the copolymers. The basic electronic structures of the copolymers were also studied by DFT calculations with the GGA/B3LYP function. Both the experimental and the calculated results indicated an increase in the HOMO energy level with increasing the content of thiophene units, whereas the corresponding change in the LUMO energy level was much smaller. Polymer photovoltaic cells of a bulk heterojunction were fabricated with the structure of ITO/PEDOT/PSS (30 nm)/copolymer−PCBM blend (70 nm)/Ca (8 nm)/Al (140 nm). It was found that the open-circuit voltage (Voc) increased (up to 0.93 V) with a decrease in the content of thiophene units. Although the observed power convention efficiency is still relatively low (up to 0.9%), the corresponding low fill factor (0.29) indicates considerable room for further improvement in the device performance. These results provided a novel concept for developing high Voc photovoltaic cells based on donor-π-acceptor conjugated copolymers by adjusting the donor/acceptor ratio.

In this iteration of Tuning Fork, James Cunningham & Joncli Keane continue the development of their two pronged approach to finding the watering hole of stillness and action, collabora tion and orientation.Originating from a showing in the Bell Tower II series, in the Judy's new Shopfrontspaoe, Tuning Fork will Fuks accentuate the durational aspect of movement through time-lapse video, heighten the trans formative potential of objects using three-metre long carbon rods as instruments of sense, sound and support and alter the space through the numerous tape measures which take on a life of their own. James Cunningham and Jondi Keane inhabit the Shopfront from Friday 7 November, eJqJioring, measuring, filming and projecting, in order to fine tune their interactions for the performance season commencing 19 November.

ECL in 3D: Selective electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of several ruthenium and iridium complexes simultaneously in solution can be controlled by electrode potential (see picture; λem=emission wavelength). These luminescent redox systems create a range of new possibilities for multi-analyte ECL detection, assessment of interdependent electrochemical/spectroscopic properties, and color tuning in light-emitting devices.

Graphene oxide (GO) possesses unusual electronic and mechanical properties, including the ability to stabilize graphene radicals (GRs). However, controlled generation of GRs remains a challenge for applications requiring large-scale production. In this study, we demonstrate controlled production of GRs by UVB irradiation of GO solutions. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of GO solutions revealed a dose-dependent exponential growth in radical production as a function of UVB exposure time. The GRs were air-stable over a long period, both in the solution state and in freeze-dried powders, suggesting they are graphene-based phenalenyl-like radicals. The redox activity of GRs was demonstrated by their ability to oxidize the chromophore 3,5,3?,5?- tetramethylbenzidine, with oxidation capacity of GO increasing with GR content.

Nanofibrous materials yielded by the self-assembly of peptides are rich in potential; particularly for the formation of scaffolds that mimic the landscape of the host environment of the cell. Here, we report a novel methodology to direct the formation of supramolecular structures presenting desirable amino acid sequences by the self-assembly of minimalist peptides which cannot otherwise yield the desired scaffold structures under biologically relevant conditions. Through the rational modification of the pK?, we were able to optimise ordered charge neutralised assembly towards in vivo conditions.

The closely related pathogenic Neisseria species N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae are able to respire in the absence of oxygen, using nitrite as an alternative electron acceptor. aniA (copper-containing nitrite reductase) is tightly regulated by four transcriptional regulators: FNR (fumarate and nitrate reductase), NarP, FUR (Ferric uptake regulator) and NsrR. The four regulators control expression of aniA in N. meningitidis by binding to specific and distinct regions of the promoter. We show in the present study that FUR and NarP are both required for the induction of expression of aniA in N. meningitidis, and that they bind adjacent to one another in a non-co-operative manner. Activation via FUR/NarP is dependent on their topological arrangement relative to the RNA polymerase-binding site. Analysis of the sequence of the aniA promoters from multiple N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae strains indicates that there are species-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms, in regions predicted to be important for regulator binding. These sequence differences alter both the in vitro DNA binding and the promoter activation in intact cells by key activators FNR (oxygen sensor) and NarP (which is activated by nitrite in N. meningitidis). The weak relative binding of FNR to the N. gonorrhoeae aniA promoter (compared to N. meningitidis) is compensated for by a higher affinity of the gonococcal aniA promoter for NarP. Despite containing nearly identical genes for catalysing and regulating denitrification, variations in the promoter for the aniA gene appear to have been selected to enable the two pathogens to tune differentially their responses to environmental variables during the aerobic–anaerobic switch.
