We aim to support user interface designers in capturing, representing and reasoning about temporal information. We have developed a method to support user interface designers in considering how the temporal aspects of software impact the user. Importantly the method is based on a detailed analysis of data from a set of situated interviews that capture the views of practicing user interface designers. This paper discusses the background research and the motivation for the method.

User-computer interface development has gone through rapid development in recent years. These developments, however, have not yet been fully implemented in management information system (MIS) design for job shop manufacturing situations. Most of the commercially available MISs are operationally inflexible and do not support management in report generation and decision making, particularly in job shops. This paper describes a framework in developing system user interfaces for job shop manufacturing situations to highlight how a generic information system can be made more useful to managerial decision making. Object-oriented programming technology has been used to provide flexible access to information stored by a generic MIS. Twenty interfacing programs have been developed. For illustration, only three of those interface programs relating to generation of strategic level management reports are discussed here.

With the rapid development of computing technologies and network technologies, Grid technology has emerged as the solution for high-performance computing. Recently, the grid of orient-services has become a hot issue in this research area. In this paper, we propose an architecture of ChemGrid in CGSP (China Grid Support Platform). The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is demonstrated by an example which is developed as a Web service based on CGSP; the Web service is used for searching elements in the periodic table. An improvement of the user interface for applications is proposed in order to obtain results interactively. Finally, an extension of ChemGrid is discussed in order to integrate different types of resources and provide specialized services.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of creating a declarative user interface language suitable for rapid prototyping of mobile and Web apps. Moreover, this paper presents a new framework for creating responsive user interfaces using JavaScript. Design/methodology/approach – Very little existing research has been done in JavaScript-specific declarative user interface (UI) languages for mobile Web apps. This paper introduces a new framework, along with several case studies that create modern responsive designs programmatically. Findings – The fully implemented prototype verifies the feasibility of a JavaScript-based declarative user interface library. This paper demonstrates that existing solutions are unwieldy and cumbersome to dynamically create and adjust nodes within a visual syntax of program code. Originality/value – This paper presents the Guix.js platform, a declarative UI library for rapid development of Web-based mobile interfaces in JavaScript.

Research is being conducted on the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for therapeutic effects, and also on the mechanisms through which such therapeutic effects are mediated. A bottleneck in the progress of the research has been the large size of the existing tDCS systems which prevents subjects from performing their daily activities. To help research into the principles, mechanisms, and benefits of tDCS, reduction of size and weight, improvement in simplicity and user friendliness, portability, and programmability of tDCS systems are vital. This paper presents a design for a low-cost, light-weight, programmable, and portable tDCS device. The device is head-mountable and can be concealed in a hat and worn on the head by the subject while receiving the stimulation. The strength of the direct current stimulation can be selected through a simple user interface. The device is constructed and its performance evaluated through bench and in vivo tests. The tests validated the operation of the device in inducing neuromodulatory changes in primary motor cortex, M1, through measuring excitability of dominant M1 of resting right first dorsal interosseus muscle by transcranial magnetic stimulation induced motor evoked potentials. It was observed that the tDCS device induced comparable neuromodulatory effects in M1 as the existing bulky tDCS systems.

Virtual reality systems are becoming a must for product and process design, training practices and ergonomic analysis in many manufacturing industries. The automotive sector is considered to be the leader in applying virtual reality (VR) solutions for real-world, non-trivial, problems. Although, a number of commercial 3D engineering tools for digital mockups exist, most of them lack intuitive direct manipulation of the digital mockups. The majority of these 3D engineering tools are constrained to the interaction mainly with rigid objects which is just half the story. To bridge this gap, we have developed a haptics interface for modelling and simulation of flexible objects. The graphical and haptic user interface developed allows the creation of multiple one dimensional (1D) flexible objects, such as hoses, cables and harnesses. The user is required to provide the mechanical properties of the material such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, material density, damping factors, as well as dimensional properties such as length, and inner and outer diameters of the flexible object. Flexilution solver is employed to estimate and simulate the dynamic behaviour of flexible objects in response to external user interaction, whereas Nvidia's generic physics engine is used to simulate the behaviour of rigid objects. A generic communication interface is developed to accommodate a variety of devices without the reconfiguration of the simulation platform.

Men with prostate cancer are not routinely offered psychosocial support despite strong evidence that being diagnosed with prostate cancer poses significant quality of life concerns and places the patient at elevated risk of developing a range of mental health disorders. The objective of this study was to develop an online psychological intervention for men with prostate cancer and to pilot test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. Development of the intervention involved a multidisciplinary collaboration, adapting face-to-face and group intervention strategies for an online format. The full online intervention and moderated forum were pilot tested with 64 participants who were recruited from urology practices in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. After consenting to participate and creating a personal account in the online programme, participants completed baseline demographic questionnaires. Participants were provided access to the programme for 6-12. weeks. After completing the programme participants completed an online survey to assess intervention and forum utilisation and satisfaction, as well as suggest intervention refinements following their use of the intervention. Patient satisfaction was calculated using mean responses to the satisfaction questionnaire. The intervention was received positively with 47.82% of participants highly satisfied with the programme, and 78.26% said they would recommend it to a friend. Participants' qualitative feedback indicated good acceptability of the online intervention. A number of technical and participant engagement issues were identified and changes recommended as a result of the feasibility testing.

Teleoperation remains an important aspect for robotic systems especially when deployed in unstructured environments. While a range of research strives for robots that are completely autonomous, many robotic applications still require some level of human-in-The-loop control. In any situation where teleoperation is required an effective User Interface (UI) remains a key component within the systems design. Current advancements in Virtual Reality (VR) software and hardware such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Google Cardboard combined with greater transparency to robotic systems afforded by middleware such as the Robot Operating System (ROS) provides an opportunity to rapidly improve traditional teleoperation interfaces. This paper uses a System of System (SoS) approach to present the concept of a Virtual Reality Dynamic User Interface (VRDUI) for the teleoperation of heterogeneous robots. Different geometric virtual workspaces are discussed and a cylindrical workspace aligned with interactive displays is presented as a virtual control room. A presentation mode within the proposed VRDUI is also detailed, this shows how point cloud information obtained from the Microsoft Kinect can be incorporated within the proposed virtual workspace. This point cloud data is successfully processed into an OctoMap utilizing the octree data structure to create a voxelized representation of the 3D scanned environment. The resulting OctoMap is then displayed to an operator as a 3D point cloud using the Oculus Rift Head Mounted Display (HMD).

If a company or person wants to invest a lot of money, where, when, and how should the investment go? A multi-agent based Financial Investment Planner may give some reasonable answers to the above question. Good advice is mainly based on adequate information, rich knowledge, and great
skills to use knowledge and information. To this end, this planner consists of four principal components information gathering agents that are responsible for gathering relevant information on the Internet, data mining agents that are in charge of discovering knowledge from retrieved information as well as other relevant databases, group decision making agents that can effectively use available knowledge and appropriate information to make reasonable decisions (investment advice), and a graphical user interface that interacts with users. This paper is focused on the group decision making part. The design and implementation of an agent-based hybrid intelligent system - agent-based soft computing society are detailed.

Teleoperation has been used in many applications, allowing a human operator to remotely control a robotic system in order to perform a particular task. Recently haptic teleoperation has focused mainly on improving performance in remote manipulation tasks, however the haptic approach offers similar advantages for teleoperative control of the motion of a mobile robot. This paper describes a prototype system designed to facilitate haptic teleoperation of an all-terrain, articulated track mobile robot. This system utilizes a multi-modal user interface intended to improve operator immersion, reduce operator overload and improve teleoperative task performance. The system architecture facilitates implementation of an application-specific haptic augmentation algorithm in order to improve operator performance in challenging real-world tasks. The contributions of this work can be categorized as the custom mobile platform, teleoperator interface and haptic augmentation strategy.

This chapter describes the use of a graphical humane interface - a Virtual Salesperson. The face of the Virtual Salesperson is a generic Facial Animation Engine developed at the University of Genova in Italy and uses a 3-D computer graphics model based on the MPEG-4 standard supplemented by Cyberware scans for facial detail. The appearance of the head may be modified by Facial Definition Parameters to more accurately model the required visage allowing one model to represent many different Talking Heads. The “brain” of the Virtual Salesperson, developed at Curtin University, integrates natural language parsing, text to speech synthesis, and artificial intelligence systems to produce a “bot” capable of helping a user through a question/answer sales enquiry. The Virtual Salesperson is a specific example of a generic Human Computer Interface - a Talking Head.

In this paper we compare ranking effectiveness of heterogeneous multimedia document retrieval when different image organizations are used for formulating queries. The quality of image queries depends on the organization of images used to make queries which in turn significantly impacts retrieval precision. CBIR (content based information retrieval) needs an effective and efficient organization of images including user interface which must be part of the configuration parameters of image retrieval research.

There is increasing coverage in the literature relating to the different facets surrounding the security service of authentication, but there is a need for further research into the usability of graphical authentication. Specifically, the usability and viability of graphical authentication techniques for providing increased security needs to be further explored. There is a significant amount of evidence relating to traditional authentication techniques which highlight the fact that as technological advances grip modern societies, the requirement for more advanced authentication and security approaches increases. The exponential growth in the number of people using the Internet carries with it the high potential for increased security threats, suggesting that there are needs for further techniques to increase security in online environments. This paper presents the findings of how various interface design approaches affect the usability of a previously developed alternative graphical authentication technique called AuthentiGraph. The security design provided by Authentigraph has been established and justified in previous research by the authors. The primary focus of this paper is the usability of this technique. Using an experimental laboratory based approach, combined with an online survey, 20 university students evaluated a combination of five varying graphical interfaces in three different screen sizes. The outcome provides the interface design criteria best suited for the implementation and use of the AuthentiGraph technique.

Personal identification of individuals is becoming increasingly adopted in society today. Due to the large number of electronic systems that require human identification, faster and more secure identification systems are pursued. Biometrics is based upon the physical characteristics of individuals; of these the fingerprint is the most common as used within law enforcement. Fingerprint-based systems have been introduced into the society but have not been well received due to relatively high rejection rates and false acceptance rates. This limited acceptance of fingerprint identification systems requires new techniques to be investigated to improve this identification method and the acceptance of the technology within society. Electronic fingerprint identification provides a method of identifying an individual within seconds quickly and easily. The fingerprint must be captured instantly to allow the system to identify the individual without any technical user interaction to simplify system operation. The performance of the entire system relies heavily on the quality of the original fingerprint image that is captured digitally. A single fingerprint scan for verification makes it easier for users accessing the system as it replaces the need to remember passwords or authorisation codes. The identification system comprises of several components to perform this function, which includes a fingerprint sensor, processor, feature extraction and verification algorithms. A compact texture feature extraction method will be implemented within an embedded microprocessor-based system for security, performance and cost effective production over currently available commercial fingerprint identification systems. To perform these functions various software packages are available for developing programs for windows-based operating systems but must not constrain to a graphical user interface alone. MATLAB was the software package chosen for this thesis due to its strong mathematical library, data analysis and image analysis libraries and capability. MATLAB enables the complete fingerprint identification system to be developed and implemented within a PC environment and also to be exported at a later date directly to an embedded processing environment. The nucleus of the fingerprint identification system is the feature extraction approach presented in this thesis that uses global texture information unlike traditional local information in minutiae-based identification methods. Commercial solid-state sensors such as the type selected for use in this thesis have a limited contact area with the fingertip and therefore only sample a limited portion of the fingerprint. This limits the number of minutiae that can be extracted from the fingerprint and as such limits the number of common singular points between two impressions of the same fingerprint. The application of texture feature extraction will be tested using variety of fingerprint images to determine the most appropriate format for use within the embedded system. This thesis has focused on designing a fingerprint-based identification system that is highly expandable using the MATLAB environment. The main components that are defined within this thesis are the hardware design, image capture, image processing and feature extraction methods. Selection of the final system components for this electronic fingerprint identification system was determined by using specific criteria to yield the highest performance from an embedded processing environment. These platforms are very cost effective and will allow fingerprint-based identification technology to be implemented in more commercial products that can benefit from the security and simplicity of a fingerprint identification system.
