In this paper, an empirical analysis to examine the effects of image segmentation with different colour models using the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm is conducted. A qualitative evaluation method based on human perceptual judgement is used. Two sets of complex images, i.e., outdoor scenes and satellite imagery, are used for demonstration. These images are employed to examine the characteristics of image segmentation using FCM with eight different colour models. The results obtained from the experimental study are compared and analysed. It is found that the CIELAB colour model yields the best outcomes in colour image segmentation with FCM.

In this paper, a new image segmentation approach that integrates color and texture features using the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm is described. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach to satellite image retrieval, an interactive region-based image query system is designed and developed. A database comprising 400 multispectral satellite images is used to evaluate the performance of the system. The results are analyzed and discussed, and a performance comparison with other methods is included. The outcomes reveal that the proposed approach is able to improve the quality of the segmentation results as well as the retrieval performance.

Satellite image processing is a complex task that has received considerable attention from many researchers. In this paper, an interactive image query system for satellite imagery searching and retrieval is proposed. Like most image retrieval systems, extraction of image features is the most important step that has a great impact on the retrieval performance. Thus, a new technique that fuses color and texture features for segmentation is introduced. Applicability of the proposed technique is assessed using a database containing multispectral satellite imagery. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed segmentation technique is able to improve quality of the segmentation results as well as the retrieval performance.

Segmentation is the process of extraction of objects from an image. This paper proposes a new algorithm to construct intuitionistic fuzzy set (IFS) from multiple fuzzy sets as an application to image segmentation. Hesitation degree in IFS is formulated as the degree of ignorance (due to the lack of knowledge) to determine whether the chosen membership function is best for image segmentation. By minimizing entropy of IFS generated from various fuzzy sets, an image is thresholded. Experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Lung modelling has emerged as a useful method for diagnosing lung diseases. Image segmentation is an important part of lung modelling systems. The ill-defined nature of image segmentation makes automated lung modelling difficult. Also, low resolution of lung images further increases the difficulty of the lung image segmentation. It is therefore important to identify a suitable segmentation algorithm that can enhance lung modelling accuracies. This paper investigates six image segmentation algorithms, used in medical imaging, and also their application to lung modelling. The algorithms are: normalised cuts, graph, region growing, watershed, Markov random field, and mean shift. The performance of the six segmentation algorithms is determined through a set of experiments on realistic 2D CT lung images. An experimental procedure is devised to measure the performance of the tested algorithms. The measured segmentation accuracies as well as execution times of the six algorithms are then compared and discussed.

This paper presents an image to text translation platform consisting of image segmentation, region features extraction, region blobs clustering, and translation components. A multi-label learning method is suggested for realizing the translation component. Empirical studies show that the predictive performance of the translation component is better than its counterparts when employed a dual-random ensemble multi-label classification algorithm.

Image segmentation requires a segmentation tool that is fast and easy to use. The GIMP has built in segmentation tools, but under some circumstances these tools perform badly. "GrabCut" is an innovative segmentation technique that uses both region and boundary information in order to perform segmentation. Several variations on the "GrabCut" algorithm have been implemented as a plugin for the GIMP. The results obtained using "GrabCut" are comparable, and often better than the results of all the other built in segmentation tools.

We present improved algorithms for automatic fade and dissolve detection in digital video analysis. We devise new two-step algorithms for fade and dissolve detection and introduce a method for eliminating false positives from a list of detected candidate transitions. In our detailed study of these gradual shot transitions, our objective has been to accurately classify the type of transitions (fade-in, fade-out, and dissolve) and to precisely locate the boundary of the transitions. This distinguishes our work from early work in scene change detection which focuses on identifying the existence of a transition rather than its precise temporal extent. We evaluate our algorithms against two other commonly used methods on a comprehensive data set, and demonstrate the improved performance due to our enhancements.

Automatically partitioning instructional videos into topic sections is a challenging problem in e-learning environments for efficient content management and cataloging. This paper addresses this problem by proposing a novel density function to delineate sections underscored by changes in topics in instructional and training videos. The content density function draws guidance from the observation that topic boundaries coincide with the ebb and flow of the 'density' of content shown in these videos. Based on this function, we propose two methods for high-level segmentation by determining topic boundaries. We study the performance of the two methods on eight training videos, and our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the two proposed high-level segmentation algorithms for learning media.

In this study, an interactive Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system that allows searching and retrieving images from databases is designed and developed. Based on the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm, the CBIR system fuses color and texture features in image segmentation. A technique to form compound queries based on the combined features of different images is devised. This technique allows users to have a better control on the search criteria, thus a higher retrieval performance can be achieved. A database consisting of skin cancer imagery is used to demonstrate the applicability of the CBIR system.

A powerful image editing system called OVIE is described, which provides fast and accurate creation, composition, rendering and other manipulation of image contents. Flexibility and convenience of the system are achieved by including two modules: image decomposition and image vectorization to understand and represent an image respectively. To understand an image comprehensively, we propose to integrate image segmentation, shape completion and image completion techniques to ensure a seamless image editing. An array of pixels is replaced by vector data with geometric edit ability for image representation since the geometrically-based editing has physical meanings and thus it is more natural or intuitive for users to edit. Compared to the existing works, our system is more convenient and can generate effects with higher quality. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper examines a new problem in large scale stream data: abnormality detection which is localized to a data segmentation process. Unlike traditional abnormality detection methods which typically build one unified model across data stream, we propose that building multiple detection models focused on different coherent sections of the video stream would result in better detection performance. One key challenge is to segment the data into coherent sections as the number of segments is not known in advance and can vary greatly across cameras; and a principled way approach is required. To this end, we first employ the recently proposed infinite HMM and collapsed Gibbs inference to automatically infer data segmentation followed by constructing abnormality detection models which are localized to each segmentation. We demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed framework in a real-world surveillance camera data over 14 days.
