.A novel electrochemical sensing platform was developed based on flower-like gold–zinc oxide core–shell nanoparticles and a graphene nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode. The gold–zinc oxide core–shell nanoflowers were synthesized by seed growth and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The modified electrode provided good electrocatalytic properties, rapid response, high stability, and favorable reproducibility for determination of ascorbic acid. The performance of the sensor included a linear dynamic range from 1.0 × 10−7 to 6.0 × 10−4 M, a limit of detection of 3.9 × 10−8 M, and a sensitivity of 24.12 µA/mM. The nanocomposite also provided excellent selectivity and lower potential for the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The sensor was used for the determination of ascorbic acid in tablets with satisfactory results. This device provides rapid, simple, and selective determination of ascorbic acid.

The modification of glassy carbon electrodes with random dispersions of nanotubes is currently the most popular approach to the preparation of carbon nanotube modified electrodes. The performance of glassy carbon electrodes modified with a random dispersion of bamboo type carbon nanotubes was compared with single walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrodes and bare glassy carbon electrodes. The electrochemical performance of all three types for electrode were compared by investigating the electrochemistry with solution species and the oxidation of guanine and adenine bases of surface adsorbed DNA. The presence of edge planes of graphene at regular intervals along the walls of the bamboo nanotubes resulted in superior electrochemical performance relative to SWNT modified electrodes from two aspects. Firstly, with solution species the peak separation of the oxidation and reduction waves were smaller indicating more rapid rates of electron transfer. Secondly, a greater number of electroactive sites along the walls of the bamboo-carbon nanotubes (BCNTs) resulted in larger current signals and a broader dynamic range for the oxidation of DNA bases.

An image fusion system accepts two source images and produces a 'better' fused image. The term 'better' differs from one context to another. In some contexts, it means holding more information. In other contexts, it means getting more accurate results or readings. In general, images hold more than just the color values. Histogram distribution, dynamic range of colors, and color maps are all as valuable as the color values presenting the pictorial information of the image. This paper studies the problems of fusing images from different domains. It proposes a method to extend the fusion algorithms to fuse image properties that define the interpretation of captured images as well.

The fabrication of enzyme electrodes using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has attracted considerable interest because of the spatial control over the enzyme immobilization. A model system of glucose oxidase covalently bound to a gold electrode modified with a SAM of 3-mercaptopropionic acid was investigated with regard to the effect of fabrication variables such as the surface topography of the underlying gold electrode, the conditions during covalent attachment of the enzyme and the buffer used. The resultant monolayer enzyme electrodes have excellent sensitivity and dynamic range which can easily be adjusted by controlling the amount of enzyme immobilized. The major drawback of such electrodes is the response which is limited by the kinetics of the enzyme rather than mass transport of substrates. Approaches to bringing such enzyme electrodes into the mass transport limiting regime by exploiting direct electron transfer between the enzyme and the electrode are outlined.

Background
The stimulus–response (S–R) curve is a well accepted constituent in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies. However, it has been suggested that parameters of the S–R curve differ when stimuli are provided in a “ramped” (measured steps from low to high intensity), or “random” fashion.

Hypothesis
We hypothesized that there would be no difference in the parameters of the S–R curve between either methodologies.

Methods
Using a randomised cross-over design, 10 healthy participants (29.6 ± 6.4 yrs, 3 f) completed “ramped” or “random” curves in biceps brachii (BB) and first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscles of both limbs. Curves were compared using mixed-factor ANOVA and correlated between limbs and methodologies.

Results
No differences (P > 0.05) and high correlations (range 0.71–0.97; P < 0.001) were observed in BB and FDI data between curves.

Conclusions
This study demonstrated that either methodology provides similar parameters of the S–R curve in healthy participants.

Health literacy is an important construct in population health and healthcare requiring rigorous measurement. The Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), with nine scales, measures a broad perception of health literacy. This study aimed to adapt the HLQ to the Danish setting, and to examine the factor structure, homogeneity, reliability and discriminant validity. The HLQ was adapted using forward-backward translation, consensus conference and cognitive interviews (n = 15). Psychometric properties were examined based on data collected by face-to-face interview (n = 481). Tests included difficulty level, composite scale reliability and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Cognitive testing revealed that only minor re-wording was required. The easiest scale to respond to positively was 'Social support for health', and the hardest were 'Navigating the healthcare system' and 'Appraisal of health information'. CFA of the individual scales showed acceptably high loadings (range 0.49-0.93). CFA fit statistics after including correlated residuals were good for seven scales, acceptable for one. Composite reliability and Cronbach's α were >0.8 for all but one scale. A nine-factor CFA model was fitted to items with no cross-loadings or correlated residuals allowed. Given this restricted model, the fit was satisfactory. The HLQ appears robust for its intended application of assessing health literacy in a range of settings. Further work is required to demonstrate sensitivity to measure changes.

In this paper, the notion of the cumulative time varying graph (C-TVG) is proposed to model the high dynamics and relationships between ordered static graph sequences for space-based information networks (SBINs). In order to improve the performance of management and control of the SBIN, the complexity and social properties of the SBIN's high dynamic topology during a period of time is investigated based on the proposed C-TVG. Moreover, a cumulative topology generation algorithm is designed to establish the topology evolution of the SBIN, which supports the C-TVG based complexity analysis and reduces network congestions and collisions resulting from traditional link establishment mechanisms between satellites. Simulations test the social properties of the SBIN cumulative topology generated through the proposed C-TVG algorithm. Results indicate that through the C-TVG based analysis, more complexity properties of the SBIN can be revealed than the topology analysis without time cumulation. In addition, the application of attack on the SBIN is simulated, and results indicate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed C-TVG and C-TVG based complexity analysis for the SBIN.

Nine phascogales (7 females, 2 males) were radio-tracked between March and July 1999 to investigate the spatial organisation of this species in spatially limited habitat near Euroa, Victoria. In this area, approximately 3.6% of the original woodland vegetation remains after 150 years of agricultural clearing. Most wooded habitat is confined to narrow linear strips along roads and streams. However, these remnants are on fertile soils and, because they have not experienced intensive harvesting, the density of large old trees is over 10 times that found in nearby State Forests and Parks. Female phascogales were monitored for 13–38 days over periods of 5–15 weeks. The size of home ranges of females was 2.3–8.0 ha, and averaged 5.0 ha. This value is one-eighth the mean home-range size previously recorded for the species in contiguous forest in Victoria. All individuals used multiple nest trees, with nests generally located in trees >80 cm diameter at breast height. Although fragmented and spatially limited, the stands of large old trees on productive soils near Euroa provide a network of well connected, high-quality habitat for phascogales. The relatively dense population of phascogales in these remnants suggests that prior to agricultural clearing and timber harvesting, phascogales may have been much more common in Victoria than at present.

Real vehicle collision experiments on full-scale road safety barriers are important to determine the outcome of a vehicle versus barrier impact accident. However, such experiments require large investment of time and money. Numerical simulation has therefore been imperative as an alternative method for testing concrete barriers. In this research, spring subgrade models were first developed to simulate the ground boundary of concrete barriers. Both heavy trucks and concrete barriers were modeled using finite element methods (FEM) to simulate dynamic collision performances. Comparison of the results generated from computer simulations and on-site full-scale experiments demonstrated that the developed models could be applied to simulate the collision of heavy trucks with concrete barriers to provide the data to design new road safety barriers and analyze existing ones.

This paper presents an algorithm based on the Growing Self Organizing Map (GSOM) called the High Dimensional Growing Self Organizing Map with Randomness (HDGSOMr) that can cluster massive high dimensional data efficiently. The original GSOM algorithm is altered to accommodate for the issues related to massive high dimensional data. These modifications are presented in detail with experimental results of a massive real-world dataset.

The hot deformation behavior of a 304 austenitic stainless steel was investigated to characterize the evolution of the dynamically recrystallized structure as a starting point for studies of the postdeformation  recrystallization behavior. The effect of different deformation parameters such as strain, strain rate, and temperature were investigated. The flow curves showed typical signs of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates (i.e., different Zener–Hollomon (Z) values). However, under very high or very low Z values, the flow curves’ shapes changed toward those of the dynamic recovery and multiple peaks, respectively. The results showed that while DRX starts at a strain as low as 60 pct of the peak strain, a fully DRX microstructure needs a high strain of almost 4.5 times the initiation strain. The DRX average grain size showed power-law functions with both the Zener–Hollomon parameter and the peak stress, although power-law breakdown was observed at high Z values.

Cellular automaton (CA) was used to simulate dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during thermomechanical deformation. Initial grain size, initial grain orientation and dislocation density were used as input data to the CA model. Flow curve, dislocation density, final grain size and orientation, and DRX volume fraction were the output data which were compared with experimental data to validate the model. The model proposed in this work considered the thermomechanical parameters (e.g., temperature and strain rate) and their role on the nucleation and growth kinetics during DRX. It was shown that the CA model can predict the final microstructure and flow curve to a high degree of accuracy and was able to successfully simulate the volume fraction of DRX as a function of strain for a wide range of deformation conditions.

The intraday high–low price range offers volatility forecasts similarly efficient to high-quality implied volatility indexes published by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) for four stock market indexes: S&P 500, S&P 100, NASDAQ 100, and Dow Jones Industrials. Examination of in-sample and out-of-sample volatility forecasts reveals that neither implied volatility nor intraday high–low range volatility consistently outperforms the other.

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone was used as the matrix for fiber-reinforced composites to get improved mechanical and thermal properties for the resulting composites. E-glass fiber was used for fiber reinforcement. The morphology, tensile, flexural, impact, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties of the composites were analyzed. The tensile, flexural, and impact properties showed dramatic improvement with the addition of glass fibers. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to obtain the Tg of the cured matrix as well as the composites. The improved thermal stability of the composites was clear from the thermogravimetric analysis. Scanning electron micrographs were taken to understand the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. The values of mechanical properties were compared with modified epoxy resin composite system. Predictive models were applied using various equations to compare the mechanical data obtained theoretically and experimentally.
