This note deals with the design of reduced-order observers for a class of nonlinear systems. The order reduction of the observer is achieved by only estimating a required partial set of the state vector. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of reduced-order observers. An observer design procedure based on linear matrix inequalities is given. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design method.

This paper considers the design of state observers for interconnected time-delay systems using a coordinate transformation method. Through such a transformation, the system that has interconnection and state delays is metamorphosed into a new system that injects time-delay information into its input and output terms, before reintroducing them back into the latter system, effectively coupling the delay terms into the IO injection terms and eliminating the delay values from the state variables. Next, full-order and reduced-order observers are designed based on the transformed system. Finally, the observed states of the transformed system that correspond to the original system is used to deduce the estimates of the original system. A numerical example is provided of an interconnected time-delay system.

In the existing literature, the existence conditions and design procedures for scalar functional observers are available for the cases where the observers’ order p is either p=1 or p=(v-1), where v is the observability index of the matrix pair (C,A). Therefore, if an observer with an order p=1 does not exist, the other available option is to use a higher order observer with p=(v-1). This paper shows that there exists another option that can be used to design scalar linear functional observers of the order lower than the well-known upper bound (v-1). The paper provides the existence conditions and a design procedure for scalar functional observers of order 0≤ p ≤2, and demonstrates the presented results with a numerical example.

The problem of observing a scalar functional or multi functionals (z(t)∈Rk , k>1) of the state vector has been the subject of numerous papers, and different algorithms have been proposed (see, [1]-[13] and references therein). There are also papers that deal with the order reduction of multi-dimensional functional observers [9,10,12,13]. For scalar functional observers, a well-known Luenberger’s classic result [1] provides an upper bound on the order with p=(v-1). It is interesting to note here that, except for a recent result of Darouach [12,13], little results have been reported on the order reduction for scalar functional observers.

This note deals with the design of reduced-order disturbance decoupled scalar functional observers for linear systems with unknown inputs. Based on a parametric approach, existence conditions are derived and a design procedure for finding reduced-order scalar functional observers is given. The derived existence conditions are relaxed and the procedure can find first-order disturbance decoupled scalar functional observers for some cases where the number of unknown inputs is more than the number of outputs. Also, the observer matching condition, which is the necessary requirement for the design of state observers for linear systems with unknown inputs, is not required. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the attractiveness of the proposed design method.

This paper considers the design of reduced-order distributed functional observers for interconnected linear systems with the presence of time delays in the interconnections. Unlike observers which consider only the ideal non-delayed output information transfer, the proposed observer is capable of dealing with delayed output information from geographically separated subsystems. It is shown that by accepting measurement data from other subsystems, the conditions under which an observer exists can be made less conservative. Existence conditions, systematic and a straightforward procedure for the synthesis of the observers are given along with numerical examples illustrating the effectiveness and simplicity of the design algorithm.

This study provides a systematic method for deriving state transformations of a class of time-delay systems with multiple output. The significance of this study is that such state transformations can be used to transform timedelay systems into new coordinates where all the time-delay terms in the system description are associated with the output and input only. Therefore, in the new coordinate system, a Luenberger-type state observer can be readily designed. Subsequently, of the three possible versions of the original state vector, namely, instantaneous, delayed, and a mixed of instantaneous and delayed, a state observer which estimates one of these versions can be obtained. This new finding allows the authors to design state observers for a wider class of time-delay systems. Conditions for the existence of such coordinate changes and an effective algorithm for computing them are provided in this study. A numerical example and simulation results are given to illustrate the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper considers a class of uncertain, nonlinear differential state delayed control systems and presents a reduced-order observer design procedure to asymptotically estimate any vector state functionals. The method proposed involves decomposition of the delayed portion of the system into two parts: a matched and mismatched part. Provided that the rank of the mismatched part is less than the number of the outputs, a reduced-order linear functional observer, with any prescribed stability margin, can be constructed by using a simple procedure. A numerical example is given to illustrate the new design procedure and its features.

This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a reduced-order linear functional state observer for linear stochastic systems. The order of the observer is the same as the dimension of the vectors to be estimated. A simple design algorithm is given together with a numerical example to illustrate the simplicity of the design procedure.

This paper shows how a functional observer can be utilized to detect faults in LTI MIMO systems. The fault detection technique is designed so that the functional observer based fault indicator asymptotically converges to a fault indicator that can be derived based on the nominal system. The asymptotic value of the proposed fault indicator is not dependent on the functional observer parameters; moreover, by choosing appropriate functional observer parameters the convergence rate of the fault indicator can be altered. Observability of the system is not a requirement for the design of the fault detection scheme.

This article is concerned with the problem of state observer for complex large-scale systems with unknown time-varying delayed interactions. The class of large-scale interconnected systems under consideration is subjected to interval time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations. By introducing a set of argumented Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals and using a new bounding estimation technique, novel delay-dependent conditions for existence of state observers with guaranteed exponential stability are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In our design approach, the set of full-order Luenberger-type state observers are systematically derived via the use of an efficient LMI-based algorithm. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the result

This paper deals with the practical aspects of reduced-order distributed functional state observers design for interconnected linear systems subject to time delays in the interconnections. Contrary to some estimation strategies which only take the ideal instantaneous output information into account, the proposed scheme incorporates output information that is inevitably encountered with time delays in the course of its transmission from the distanced subsystems. It is proved that such estimator possesses less restrictive existence conditions with the acceptance of measurement data from other interrelated subsystems. Upon the satisfaction of the established existence conditions, it will be demonstrated through a simple design procedure and simulation results that a feasible observer can be realized for a given numerical system.

This paper presents a functional observer based fault detection method. The fault detection is achieved using a functional observer based fault indicator that asymptotically converges to a fault indicator that can be derived based on the nominal system. The asymptotic value of the proposed fault indicator is independent of the functional observer parameters and also the convergence rate of the fault indicator can be altered by choosing appropriate functional observer parameters. The advantage of using this new method is that the observed system is not necessarily needed to be observable; therefore, the proposed fault detection technique is also applicable for systems where state observers cannot be designed; moreover, the functional observer fault detection scheme is always of reduced order in comparison to a state observer based scheme.
