Sodium salts of dimethyldithiocarbamate, diethyldithiocarbamate and pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate react with the multiply bonded paramagnetic dirhenium(III,II) complex Re2(μ-O2CCH3)Cl4(μ-dppm)2, 1 (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2) in refluxing ethanol to afford the paramagnetic substitution products of the type Re2(η2-S,S)2(μ-S,S)(μ-Cl)2(μ-dppm), where S,S represents the dithiocarbamato ligands [S,S = S2CNMe2, 4(LMe); S2CNEt2, 4(LEt) and S2CN(CH2)4, 4(LPyr)]. These are the first examples of dirhenium complexes that contain bridging dithiocarbamato ligand along with the dppm ligand. These complexes have very similar spectral (UV-Vis, IR, EPR) and electrochemical properties which are also reported. The identity of 4(LEt) has been established by single-crystal X-ray structure determination (Re-Re distance 2.6385 (9) Å) and is shown to have edge-shared bioctahedral structure. The electronic structure and the absorption spectra of the complexes are scrutinized by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) analyses.

Environmental and ecological conditions can shape the evolution of life history traits in many animals. Among such factors, food or nutrition availability can play an important evolutionary role in moderating an animal's life history traits, particularly sexually selected traits. Here, we test whether diet quantity and/or composition in the form of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (here termed 'n3LC') influence the expression of pre- and postcopulatory traits in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a livebearing poeciliid fish. We assigned males haphazardly to one of two experimental diets supplemented with n3LC, and each of these diet treatments was further divided into two diet 'quantity' treatments. Our experimental design therefore explored the main and interacting effects of two factors (n3LC content and diet quantity) on the expression of precopulatory (sexual behaviour and sexual ornamentation, including the size, number and spectral properties of colour spots) and postcopulatory (the velocity, viability, number and length of sperm) sexually selected traits. Our study revealed that diet quantity had significant effects on most of the pre- and postcopulatory traits, while n3LC manipulation had a significant effect on sperm traits and in particular on sperm viability. Our analyses also revealed interacting effects of diet quantity and n3LC levels on courtship displays, and the area of orange and iridescent colour spots in the males' colour patterns. We also confirmed that our dietary manipulations of n3LC resulted in the differential uptake of n3LC in body and testes tissues in the different n3LC groups. This study reveals the effects of diet quantity and n3LC on behavioural, ornamental and ejaculate traits in P. reticulata and underscores the likely role that diet plays in maintaining the high variability in these condition-dependent sexual traits.

Applications of LSPR nano-particles in various areas of solar cells, LSPR biosensors, and SERS biosensors, based on interaction of light with noble metal nano-particles is increasing. Therefore, design and nano-fabrication of the LSPR devices is a key step in developing such applications. Design of nano-structures with desirable spectral properties using numerical techniques such as finite difference time domain (FDTD) is the first step in this work. A new structure called nano-sinusoid, satisfying the some desirable LSPR characteristics, is designed and simulated using the FDTD method. In the next stage, analytical method of electro static eigen mode method is used to validate the simulation results. The, nano-fabrications method of electron beam lithography (EBL) is implemented to fabricate the proposed profile with high precision. Finally, atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to investigate the shape of the fabricated nano-particles, and the dark field microscopy is employed to demonstrate the particular spectral characteristics of the proposed nano-sinusoids.

Based on rhodamine 6G, a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent sensor R6G1 for Hg2+ detection had been designed and prepared. It was synthesized through the well-known reaction that thiourea derivatives with amine could easily be transformed into guanidine derivatives with the promotion of Hg2+. By coordination with Hg2+, R6G1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity over other metal ions in aqueous systems. Furthermore, fluorescence titration experiments established the well-fitted linearity function of the fluorescent intensity with the concentration of Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The results showed that R6G1 provided high water solubility and high selectivity toward Hg2+ but no significant response toward other competitive cations and anions. It was suggested that the chemosensor would find its application in environmental field requiring rapid and accurate Hg2+ ion analysis.

The Green and Golden Bell frog Litoria aureo is in major decline in Australia, where its distribution is now confined mainly to the east coast of New South Wales (NSW). Infection by the newly emerged amphibian fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been identified as one of the main threats affecting L. aurea. Surprisingly, some of the sites in NSW sustaining the largest populations of this species are industrial and urban habitats that are often disturbed and polluted, which could protect L. aurea from chytrid infection if pollution had fungicidal capacity. The aim of this study was to characterise the trace metal concentration of several L. aurea breeding sites in the Sydney and IIlawarra regions of NSW and to evaluate the fungicidal efficacy of the main "'ace metals identified. Selected L. aurea sites were sampled throughout the breeding season (September to February) to establish the concentration of trace metals in both surface sediment and waters. Physico-chemical parameters including pH and salinity were also measured. Of the trace metals identified, copper and zinc were consistently elevated across sites. Over 50% of sites exceeded the National Sediment Quality Guideline for both copper and zinc concentration, and over 90% of sites exceeded the National Water Quality Guideline for these metals. Consequently, we evaluated their effect on the growth and survival of a laboratory culture of B. dendrobatidis,These tests were performed in media containing dissolved metal concentrations of 0.02 - 0.65 mgL-1 Cu and 0.24 - 5.0 mgL-1 Zn. Growth rates were inferred by total fungal density in liquid culture (based on spectral absorbance measurements), final dry weight, and the density of zoospores in fungal cultures grown for 28 days. Both copper and zinc were found to reduce the growth and proliferation of B. dendrobatidis, but in a non-linear manner. This suggests that L. aurea may be gaining some protection from B. dendrobatidis infection at several of the sites examined.

The physicochemical properties of a range of NaNTf2 (or NaTFSI) salt concentrations in N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (or C3mpyrFSI) ionic liquid were investigated by DSC, conductivity, cyclic voltammetry and diffusivity studies. Cyclic voltammetry indicated a stable sodium plating behavior with a current of 5 mA cm(-2) at 25 °C to 20 mA cm(-2) at 100 °C, along with high reversibility identifying this electrolyte as a possible candidate for sodium-ion or sodium metal battery applications. (23)Na NMR chemical shifts and spectral linewidths (FWHM) indicate a complex coordination of the Na(+) ion which is dependent on both temperature and salt concentration with an apparently stronger coordination to the NTf2 anion upon increasing the NaNTf2 concentration. Temperature dependent PFG-NMR diffusion measurements show that both FSI and NTf2 have a comparable behaviour although the smaller FSI anion is more diffusive.

The impact on performance of the surface energy and roughness of membrane materials used for direct contact membrane distillation are critical but yet poorly investigated parameters. The capacity to alter the wettability of highly hydrophobic materials such as poly(tetra-fluoro-ethylene) (PTFE) by gas plasma treatments is reported in this paper. An equally important contribution from this investigation arises from illustrating how vaporized material from the treated sample participates after a short while in the composition of the plasma and fundamentally changes the result of surface chemistry processes. The water contact angle across the hydrophobic membranes is generally controlled by varying the plasma gas conditions, such as the plasma power, chamber pressure and irradiation duration. Changes to surface porosity and roughness of the bulk material as well as the surface chemistry, through specific and partial de-fluorination of the surface were detected and systematically studied by Fourier transform infra-red analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the rupture of fibrils, formed during membrane processing by thermal-stretching, led to the formation of a denser surface composed of nodules similar to these naturally acting as bridging points across the membrane material between fibrils. This structural change has a profound and impart a permanent effect on the permeation across the modified membranes, which was found to be enhanced by up to 10% for long plasma exposures while the selectivity of the membranes was found to remain unaffected by the treatment at a level higher than 99.99%. This is the first time that an investigation demonstrates how the permeation characteristics of these membranes is directly related to data from spectral, morphological and surface charge analyses, which provide new insights on the impact of plasma treatments on both, the surface charge and roughness, of PTFE porous materials.

Thermal diffusivity of silk fibroin films, α = (1.6 ± 0.24) × 10-7 m2 s-1, was measured by a direct contact method. It was shown to be reduced down to ∼1 × 10-7 m2 s-1 in the crystallized phase, consistent with the multi-domain composition of β-sheet assemblies. Crystalline silk with β-sheets was made by dipping into alcohol and was used as a positive electron beam lithography (EBL) resist. It is shown by direct IR imaging of the 1619 cm-1 amide-I CO spectral signature and 3290 cm-1 amide-A N-H stretching band that an e-beam is responsible for unzipping β-sheets, which subsequently results in exposed areas returning to a water soluble state. This makes it possible to develop a water-based biocompatible silk resist and use it in lithography applications. The general principles of protein crystallization, traceable to spectral changes in IR amide bands of silk, can be used as a guide for the creation of new protein EBL resists and to quantify the electron dose required for solubility. Foam formation and laser treatments of silk can provide new approaches in surface functionalization and fabrication of 3D bio-scaffolds.
