Laser shock peening (LSP) is an emerging surface treatment technology for metallic materials, which appears to produce more significant compressive residual stresses than those from the conventional shot peening (SP) for fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance, etc. The finite element method has been applied to simulate the laser shock peening treatment to provide the overall numerical assessment of the characteristic physical processes and transformations. However, the previous researchers mostly focused on metallic specimens with simple geometry, e.g. flat surface. The current work investigates geometrical effects of metallic specimens with curved surface on the residual stress fields produced by LSP process using three-dimensional finite element (3-D FEM) analysis and aluminium alloy rods with a middle scalloped section subject to two-sided laser shock peening. Specimens were numerically studied to determine dynamic and residual stress fields with varying laser parameters and geometrical parameters, e.g. laser power intensity and radius of the middle scalloped section. The results showed that the geometrical effects of the curved target surface greatly influenced residual stress fields.

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment method that can result in significant improvement in the fatigue life of many metallic components. The process produces very little or no surface profile modification while producing a considerably deeper compressive residual stress layer than traditional shot peening operations. The work discussed here was designed to: (a) quantify the fatigue life improvement achieved by LSP in a typical high strength aircraft aluminium alloy and (b) identify any technological risks associated with its use. It is shown that when LSP conditions are optimal for the material and specimen configuration, a —three to four times increase in fatigue life over the as-machined specimens could be achieved for a representative fighter aircraft loading spectrum when applied at a representative load level. However, if the process parameters are not optimal for the material investigated here, fatigue lives of LSP treated specimens may be reduced instead of increased due to the occurrence of internal cracking. This paper details the effect of laser power density on fatigue life of 7050-T7451 aluminium alloy by experimental and numerical analysis.

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment technique for metal alloys, with the great improvement of their fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance performance. Finite element method has been widely applied to simulate the LSP to provide the theoretically predictive assessment and optimally parametric design. In the current work, 3-D numerical modelling approaches, combining the explicit dynamic analysis, static equilibrium analysis algorithms and different plasticity models for the high strain rate exceeding 106s-1, are further developed. To verify the proposed methods, 3-D static and dynamic FEA of AA7075-T7351 rods subject to two-sided laser shock peening are performed using the FEA package–ABAQUS. The dynamic and residual stress fields, shock wave propagation and surface deformation of the treated metal from different material modelling approaches have a good agreement.

This work seeks to lay the framework of film grammar over the video to be analyzed. We use the shot attributes of motion and shot length to produce a novel continuous measure of one of the aesthetic elements of films, namely the movie tempo. We refer to our previous work detailing the study of this construct and its automatic derivation, and also demonstrating its usefulness as an expressive element and as a sound basis for higher semantic descriptions such as dramatic events and story elements. Initial assessment of tempo was performed in our study on the basis that the relative importance of both shot length and motion in formulating the tempo function was the same. In this paper, we analyze their relative contributions to tempo, and demonstrate how these two factors can be manipulated to influence audience perception of movie time.

Motivated by existing cinematic conventions known as film grammar, we proposed a computational approach to determine tempo as a high-level movie content descriptor as well as means for deriving dramatic story sections and events occurring in movies. Movie tempo is extracted from two easily computed aspects in our approach: shot length and motion. Story sections and events are generally associated with changes in tempo, and are thus identified by edges located in the tempo function. In this paper, we analyze our initial founding of the tempo function on the basis that the distribution of both shot length and motion in movies is normal. Given that the distribution of shot length is approximately Weibull as confirmed in our experiments, we examine the impact of modelling and modifying the contributions of shot length to tempo. We derive an appropriate normalization function that faithfully encapsulates the role of shot length in tempo perception, and analyze the changes to the story sections identified in films.

This paper presents novel additions to our existing amateur media creation framework. The framework provides at-capture guidance to enable the home movie maker to realize their aesthetic and narrative goals and automation of post-production editing. A common problem with the amateur filming context is its contingent nature, which often results in the failure to gain footage vital to the user's goals, even with at-capture software embedding. Accordingly, we have modelled minimizing the difference between target and captured footage at a given time during filming as a probability distribution divergence problem. We apply two policies of feedback to the user on their performance, passive communication via a suggestion desirability measure, and active filtering of undesirable suggestions. We demonstrate the framework using each policy with a simulation of various user and filming situations with promising results.

Examination of how Victoria's Special Operations Group and their tactics have contributed to the extraordinary number of police shootings in Victoria. Looks at how these tactics have been passed on to the ordinary police. Based on author's research into the paramilitarisation of the police. Exposes the risks of allowing Australia's police forces to move away from their original charter of keeping the peace with the use of minimum force. Author lectures in Police Studies at Deakin University. She has represented the families of several men shot and killed by police in the late 1980s in her work as a community lawyer.

This paper aims to show that by using low level feature extraction, motion and object identifying and tracking methods, features can be extracted and indexed for efficient and effective retrieval for video; such as an awards ceremony video. Video scene/shot analysis and key frame extraction are used as a foundation to identify objects in video and be able to find spatial relationships within the video. The compounding of low level features such as colour, texture and abstract object identification lead into higher level real object identification and tracking and scene detection. The main focus is on using a video style that is different to the heavily used sports and news genres. Using different video styles can open the door to creating methods that could encompass all video types instead of specialized methods for each specific style of video.
