A major problem for a grid user is the discovery of currently available services. With large number of services, it is beneficial for a user to be able to discover the services that most closely match their requirements. This report shows how to extend some concepts of UDDI such that they are suitable for dynamic parameter based discovery of grid services.

Service-Oriented Content Adaptation (SOCA) has emerged as a potential solution to the content-device mismatch problem. One of the key problems with the SOCA scheme is that a content adaptation task can potentially be performed by multiple services. In this paper, we propose an approach to the service discovery problem for SOCA and it is demonstrated to perform well.

Electronic information is becoming increasingly rich in content and varied in format and style while at the same time client devices are getting increasingly varied in their capabilities. This mismatch between rich contents and the end devices capability presents a challenge in providing seamless and ubiquitous access to electronic documents to interested users. Service-oriented content adaptation has emerged as a potential solution to the content-device mismatch problem. Since an adaptation task can potentially be performed by multiple content adaptation services (CAS), an approach for CAS discovery is a fundamental component of service-oriented content adaptation environment. In this paper, we propose a service discovery approach that considers the client device capability and the service’s attributes to discover appropriate CAS while optimizing performance and functionality. The efficiency of the proposed CAS discovery protocol is studied experimentally. The results show that the proposed discovery approach is effective in terms of discovering appropriate content adaptation services.

Deakin University Library offers a number of search and discovery tools to its user communities: a web scale discovery product, a faceted display catalogue and a traditional catalogue. The presentation provides an overview of the challenges the Library has faced in its attempt to offer a seamless, comprehensive search and discovery service, that facilitates the finding of information resources. The information literacy and research skill levels of the University’s various cohort groups are considered, as well as the important role metadata plays in leading users to the resources they want.

With the fast growth of applications of service-oriented architecture (SOA) in software engineering, there has been a rapid increase in demand for building service-based systems (SBSs) by composing existing Web services. Finding appropriate component services to compose is a key step in the SBS engineering process. Existing approaches require that system engineers have detailed knowledge of SOA techniques which is often too demanding. To address this issue, we propose KS3 (Keyword Search for Service-based Systems), a novel approach that integrates and automates the system planning, service discovery and service selection operations for building SBSs based on keyword search. KS3 assists system engineers without detailed knowledge of SOA techniques in searching for component services to build SBSs by typing a few keywords that represent the tasks of the SBSs with quality constraints and optimisation goals for system quality, e.g., reliability, throughput and cost. KS3 offers a new paradigm for SBS engineering that can significantly save the time and effort during the system engineering process. We conducted large-scale experiments using a real-world Web service dataset to demonstrate the practicality, effectiveness and efficiency of KS3.

With the recent innovations in stateful web services, they are now being used to support the construction of distributed systems using software as a service. While the state of web services is preserved, the state is still hidden from clients thus searches for both functionality and state remains a two step process. Proposed in this report is the Resources Via Web Instances (RVWI) framework. RVWI grants to web services the ability to include their state and characteristics in their WSDL. This was done by allowing snapshots (instances) of a web service to be listed in the WSDL of the web service. Instances were utilised as they contain state and characteristic information directly from the web service. Thanks to the inclusion of state and characteristics, queries for web services can now be carried out on the availability of a web service and the 'dimensions' of resources..

Service-oriented content adaptation scheme has emerged to address content adaptation problem. In this scheme, content adaptation functions are provided as services by multiple providers, located across wide area network. To benefit from these services, clients must be able to locate them in the network. This makes service discovery as an important component. In this paper, we propose a service discovery protocol that takes into account searching space, searching time, QoS and physical location of the potential providers. The performance of the proposed protocol is studied in term of discoverability under various conditions and shown to be substantially better than the keyword-based and QoS-based approaches.

The major contributions presented in this thesis are twofold. Firstly, it presents the research towards a unique services-based Hydrocarbon Exploration and Discovery Model that demonstrates the feasibility of using advanced ICT technologies in the reproduction of stages involved in an oil and gas discovery, processing and analysis process. Secondly, the research demonstrated a solution of the problems in providing agreed level of quality of service (QoS) and formalizing of appropriate Service Level Agreements (SLA) within such complex environment where different services within the model can be delivered by a variety of service providers

Nondedicated clusters are currently at the forefront of the development of high performance computing systems. These clusters are relatively intolerant of hardware failures and cannot manage dynamic cluster membership efficiently. This report presents the logical design of an innovative self discovery service that provides for automated cluster management and resource discovery. The proposed service has an ability to share or recover unused computing resources, and to adapt to transient conditions autonomically, as well as the capability of providing dynamically scalable virtual computers on demand.

Grid computing and service oriented architectures improve the way computational tasks are performed. Through this research a management system, utilising the autonomic characteristics of self discovery and negotiation, self configuration and self healing, was designed and implemented, ultimately removing the need for users to know the intricacies of these systems.

While the emergence of clouds had lead to a significant paradigm shift in business and research, cloud computing is still in its infancy. Specifically, there is no effective publication and discovery service nor are cloud services easy to use. This paper presents a new technology for offering ease of discovery, selection and use of clusters hosted within clouds. By improving these services, cloud clusters become easily accessible to all clients, software services to noncomputing human user.

Clouds refer to computational resources (in particular, clusters) that are accessible as scalable, on demand, pay-as- you-go services provided in the Internet. However, clouds are in their infancy and lack a high level abstraction. Specifically, there is no effective discovery and selection service for clusters and offer little to no ease of use for clients. Here we show a technology that exposes clusters as Web services in the form of a Cluster as a Service for publishing via WSDL, discovering, selecting and using clusters.
