This study investigated how the quality of heterosexual relationships was affected by individuals views of themselves, their partners and how they thought their partners viewed them. Relationship quality was more affected by mood and by how respondents thought their partners viewed them, than by the reality of their partner's views.

Proton transport has been recognized as an essential process in many biological systems, as well as electrochemical devices including fuel cells and redox flow batteries. In the present study, we address the pressing need for solvent-free proton conducting polymer electrolytes for high-temperature PEM fuel cell applications by developing a novel all-solid polyelectrolyte membrane with a self-assembled proton-channel structure. We show that this self-assembled nanostructure endows the material with exciting ‘dry’ proton conductivity at elevated temperatures, as high as 0.3 mS cm−1 at 120 °C, making it an attractive candidate for high-temperature PEM fuel cell applications. Based on the combined investigation of solid-state NMR, FTIR and conductivity measurements, we propose that both molecular design and nano-scale structures are essential for obtaining highly conductive anhydrous proton conductors.

The modification of denial, defensiveness, and cognitive distortions and the enhancement of victim empathy are central components in the treatment of pedophilic sex offenders (PSOs) and are thus important factors to evaluate. This review of the literature highlights three broad problems with self-report measures of these variables. First, the psychometric properties of measures vary enormously, with some having no established validity or reliability. Second, the purpose of the measure is generally quite transparent, enabling the respondent to easily pick the socially acceptable responses. Finally, it is difficult to determine which are the best measures to use in assessing PSOs. Measures range from those designed for the general public to those designed specifically for PSOs. Also, they range from those that assess broad processes (e.g., general empathy) to those that assess offensespecific variables (e.g., victim empathy). This article argues that these issues need to be addressed to improve both the assessment of these processes among PSOs and the evaluation of treatment programs for PSOs.

The modification of deviant cognitions and the enhancement of victim empathy are central components in many treatment programs for sex offenders. There appear to be three broad problems with self-report measures of these factors: variations in the psychometric evaluation of measures; the transparency of items and thus the likely influence of social desirability; and the difficulty of determining which measures are specific to particular types of sex offenders. The aim of this study was to investigate these three issues among child molesters (CMs), and men convicted of sex offences against adults (ASOs). Data were collected from 36 CMs and 31 ASOs and from two comparison groups (33 men convicted of nonsexual offences and 40 nonoffenders from the community), to assess the reliability (internal and test-retest) and validity (discriminant, construct, and face) of measures, the influence of sexual social desirability on responding and the specificity of measures to both sex offender groups. Collectively, the results raise issues related to the assessment of sex offenders that require further investigation. They also have theoretical implications about the relationship between cognitive and emotive processes among sex offenders.

The architecture of self-organized three-dimensionally interconnected nanocrystal fibrillar networks has been achieved by ultrasound from a solution consisting of separate spherulites. The ultrasound stimulated structural transformation is correlated to the striking ultrasonic effects on turning nongelled solutions or weak gels into strong gels instantly, with enhancement of the storage modulus up to 3 magnitudes and up to 4 times more gelling capability. The basic principle involved in the ultrasound-induced structural transformation is established on the basis of the nucleation-and-growth model of a fiber network formation, and the mechanism of seeding multiplication, aggregation suppressing, and fiber distribution and growth promotion is proposed. This novel technique enables us to produce self-supporting gel functional materials possessing significantly modified macroscopic properties, from materials previously thus far considered to be “useless”, without the use of chemical stimuli. Moreover, it provides a general strategy for the engineering of self-organized fiber network architectures, and we are consequently able to achieve the supramolecular functional materials with controllable macroscopic properties.

Natural rubber (NR)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) composites were prepared bycombining self-assembly and latex compounding techniques. The acid-treated MWCNTs (H2SO4: HNO3=3:1,volume ratio) were self-assembled with poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) through electrostaticadhesion. In the second assembling, NR/MWCNTs composites were developed by mixing MWCNTs/PDDAsolution with NR latex. The results show that MWCNTs are homogenously distributed throughout the NRmatrix as single tube and present a great interfacial adhesion with NR phase when MWCNTs contents areless than 3 wt%. Moreover, the addition of the MWCNTs brings about the remarkable enhancement in tensilestrength and crosslink density compared with the NR host, and the data peak at 2 wt% MWCNTs loadings. When more MWCNTs are loaded, aggregations of MWCNTs are gradually generated, and the tensile strengthand crosslink both decrease to a certain extent.

Aim:

To explore the views of individuals recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in relation to self-management of dietary intake and physical activity, and to compare these with the views of health professionals (HPs).

Background:
Diabetes education has become a priority area in primary and secondary care, and many education programmes are now embedded within a patient’s care package. There are few contemporaneous explorations of patients’ views about lifestyle self-management. Such research is vital in order to identify areas that require further support, refinement or enhancement in terms of patient education.

Methods:
Focus groups were held with patients recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (n516, 38% female, aged 45–73 years). In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with HPs (n57). Discussions focussed on self-management specifically in relation to making dietary and physical activity changes. All discussions were tape recorded, transcribed and analysed by emergent themes analysis using NVivo to manage the coded data.

Findings:
Barriers were divided into six main categories: difficulty changing well- stablished habits, negative perception of the ‘new’ or recommended regimen, barriers relating to social circumstances, lack of knowledge and understanding, lack of motivation and barriers relating to the practicalities of making lifestyle changes. HPs generally echoed the views of patients. In conclusion, even against a background of diabetes education, recently diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes discussed a wide range of barriers to self-management of diet and physical activity. The findings could help to provide HPs with a deeper understanding of the needs of recently diagnosed patients and may help refine current diabetes education activities and inform the development of educational resources.

Silica nanoparticles were applied onto the fiber surface of an interbonded three-dimensional polycaprolactone fibrous tissue scaffold by an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The nanoparticle layer was found to improve the fiber wettability and surface roughness. Osteoblast cells were cultured on the fibrous scaffolds to evaluate the biological compatibility. The silica nanoparticle coated scaffold showed enhanced cell attachment, proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activities. The overall results suggested that interbonded fibrous scaffold with silica nanoparticulate coating could be a promising scaffolding candidate for various applications in bone repair and regeneration.

Here we report self-assembly of ultrathin gold nanowires and single-walled carbon nanotubes with an ultrahigh aspect ratio as a highly sensitive substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. And we demonstrated that the hybrids were especially efficient in adsorption of aromatic molecules such as 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and the hybrids materials could be used as a novel platform for trace level detection in the verification of paper notes through the Raman enhancement technique.
