Analysis of texture and R value variations in asymmetric rolling of if steel

Asymmetric rolling (ASR) is a potential process to reach better grain refinement than in conventional rolling, thus, can lead to better mechanical properties. It is not known, however, how the introduction of a shear component will change the ideal orientations of the textures, and consequently, the evolution of plastic anisotropy. To understand the effect of the added shear on texture evolution in ASR, a stability analysis is carried out in orientation space and the variations in the position and strength of the ideal orientations are analysed as a function of the shear component. Then, modelling of R values is presented for various cases. On that basis, it is shown that there is an upper limit for the shear component in asymmetric rolling that still retains the 〈1 1 1〉 ND fibre (ND: direction normal to the sheet) which is good for formability. It is also found that better persistence of the ND fibre can be obtained by cyclically alternating the shear component. The theoretical results are well supported by comparison to experimental evidences. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Asymmetric rolling of interstitial-free steel using differential roll diameters. Part II : microstructure and annealing effects

The effects of annealing on the microstructure, texture, tensile properties, and R value evolution of an IF steel sheet after room-temperature symmetric and asymmetric rolling were examined. Simulations were carried out to obtain R values from the experimental textures using the viscoplastic self-consistent polycrystal plasticity model. The investigation revealed the variations in the textures due to annealing and symmetric/asymmetric rolling and showed that the R values correlate strongly with the evolution of the texture. An optimum heat treatment for the balance of strength, ductility, and deep drawability was found to be at 873 K (600 _C) for 30 minutes.

Material characterizations for benchmark 1 and benchmark 2

 This report summarizes material testing on three metals used in the Numisheet 2014 Benchmark Study, a DP 600 steel sheet, a TRIP 780 steel sheet, and an aluminum alloy 5182-O sheet. The tests include r value, yield stress, and hardening in uniaxial tension at 15 degree increments of the loading axis in the plane of the sheet, r value, yield stress, and hardening in equal biaxial tension, and forming limit curves for all three metals. In addition, cyclic tension-compression tests along the rolling direction are reported for the DP 600 and aluminum alloy.

Study on yield function and plastic potential under non-associated flow for accurate earing prediction in cup drawing

Prediction of more than four ears in a cup drawing process can be successfully achieved by considering r-value and stress directionalities. Yld2004-18p based on associated flow rule and Yld2000-2D based on non-associated flow rule are the examples. The former, however, is more costly in terms of computational efficiency than the latter. In this work, an anisotropic constitutive model based on non-associated flow rule which combines two different functions, Hill (1948) and Yld2000-2d, is implemented to a user defined material model. The accuracy of the anisotropic directionalities (yield stresses and plastic strain ratios) is evaluated. Simulation of a mini-die cup drawing with a body stock alloy predicted eight ears, in good agreement with the experimental results. The use of Hill (1948) model for the yield function and Yld2000-2d for plastic potential under the framework of non-associated flow rule led to accurate prediction of up to eight ears at the lower computational cost.

Accounting convergence of intangibles : value relevance of R & D accounting treatment

The rapid globalization of markets has resulted in further acceleration of the worldwide convergence of accounting standards, including the development of high-quality and globally consistent accounting standards for both domestic and cross-border financial reporting. Prior studies report that earnings value relevance of U.S. companies is decreasing, and the decline is partially attributable to the immediate expensing of intangibles, like research and development (R&D). Being one of the areas of divergence, accounting for R&D was highlighted as one of the seven short-term convergence projects by the FASB and IASB. Australia's adoption of IFRS in 2005 presents an empirical setting to evaluate the value relevance of different accounting treatments for R&D, and ultimately assist financial accounting standard setters in the U.S. and abroad in finding an appropriate accounting treatment for R&D.

Do dot coms add value : a preliminary study of the market capitalisation of Australian and Indian telecoms and banking sectors

E-Business is increasingly reshaping the way businesses operate across the globe. Globally, businesses in the banking and telecoms sectors have been re-engineering their value chains by adopting e-Business presence by means of dot com launches. The second half of the 1990s, however, saw both the rise and subsequent collapse of dot com entities as a major focus of investment interest, with consequent speculation over the viability of this corporate vehicle. The perceived increase in market capitalisation by means of these ventures during the boom period is now not so certain. In this paper, we report the results of a preliminary study which investigated the impact of dot com launches on market capitalisation within the banking and telecoms sectors of Australia and India.

Lupin (Lupinus albus) protein isolate (L-ISO) has adequate nutritional value and reduces large intestinal weight in rats after restricted and ad libitum feeding.

Background: A protein isolate from white lupin (Lupinus albus; L-ISO) has potential as a novel human food ingredient, but its nutritional effects are unknown.

Methods: We evaluated protein quality and effects on body composition in rats of isoenergic diets of L-ISO, lactalbumin, or casein with both restricted (10-day) and ad libitum (28-day)intake. The diets were equivalent in protein per se, but supplementation was used to balance essential amino acid levels.

Results: In both studies, the rats consumed similar amounts of each diet, and no effect of diet on the gain:feed ratio was observed--though gain:N ratio and net protein utilization were slightly lower for the L-ISO diet. Lower large intestinal weights after the L-ISO than after the lactalbumin diet were observed in both studies. The L-ISO diet resulted in lowered body fat percentage in the 10-day study but in an elevated level in the 28-day study. Liver composition (DNA, RNA, glycogen, and fat) and plasma levels of some amino acids (His, Thr, Ala, Pro, Tyr, Val and Met) were affected by diet, but no effects on plasma lipid, glucose, or uric acid were observed.

Conclusion: The L-ISO diet did not affect feed intake and has adequate nutritional quality in rats whilst modifying large intestinal weight in a potentially beneficial manner--suggesting potential for this protein in human nutrition.

Non-smooth optimization methods for computation of the conditional value-at-risk and portfolio optimization

We examine numerical performance of various methods of calculation of the Conditional Value-at-risk (CVaR), and portfolio optimization with respect to this risk measure. We concentrate on the method proposed by Rockafellar and Uryasev in (Rockafellar, R.T. and Uryasev, S., 2000, Optimization of conditional value-at-risk. Journal of Risk, 2, 21-41), which converts this problem to that of convex optimization. We compare the use of linear programming techniques against a non-smooth optimization method of the discrete gradient, and establish the supremacy of the latter. We show that non-smooth optimization can be used efficiently for large portfolio optimization, and also examine parallel execution of this method on computer clusters.

Can sand slugs in rivers deliver conservation benefits? The biodiversity value of tributary junction plug wetlands in the Glenelg River, Australia

Restoration works are carried out to alleviate human impacts and improve habitats within ecosystems. However, human impacts may also create new (anthropogenic) habitat for species to exploit.A dilemma arises when proposed restoration works would remove anthropogenic habitat and the assemblages it supports. Sediment input into the Glenelg River has formed tributary junction plug wetlands at confluences. Sand slug removal is proposed as part of river rehabilitation, but would also drain plug wetlands. We sampled four plug wetland, four river run and three river pool sites to determine whether plug wetlands influence water quality and add to the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates in the Glenelg River.Water quality and macroinvertebrate diversity were similar in plug wetlands, river runs and river pools.Assemblages were distinct among all sites, regardless of type, so there was no characteristic ‘plug-wetland fauna’. Therefore, although removal of plug wetlands would not cause a dramatic loss of invertebrate biodiversity, it would destroy anthropogenic habitat that supports a similar range of species to natural habitats in a river subject to multiple degrading processes. Gains from rehabilitation should be weighed against the value of anthropogenic habitat and the extent of similar habitat lost elsewhere in the ecosystem.
