Provides evidence that familiarity as well as recollection contributes to the recognition advantage for low-frequency words. The importance for explanations of the low-frequency word advantage to account for the influence of both explicit and implicit memory processes is discussed with emphasis given to developing the dual-process model.

Child sexual offenders are hypothesized to hold offence-supportive beliefs that set them apart from others. The current study seeks support for this view via a cognitive-experimental approach. Child sexual offenders and offender controls were exposed to pictures of semi-clothed children (priming condition) or clothed, mature adults (control condition). Participants then read ambiguous sentences describing children's actions that could be interpreted in a sexualized manner. Next, participants completed a surprise recognition test in which half the sentences were re-presented in an unambiguously sexual form, and half in an unambiguously non-sexual form. Contrary to hypotheses, primed and/or control child sexual offenders did not show a memory bias for sexualized sentences, suggesting that they did not interpret the original sentences in line with offence-supportive beliefs. Results raise questions about whether child sexual offenders universally hold abnormal beliefs that facilitate their offending. Results also highlight the need for further experimental research within this field.

tRNA(3Lys) is a primer for reverse transcription in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and the anticodon of tRNA(3Lys) has been implicated in playing a role in both its placement onto the HIV-1 genome and its interaction with HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT). In this work, the anticodon in a tRNA(3Lys) gene was changed from UUU to CUA (tRNA(3Lys)Su+) or, in addition, G-73 was altered to A (tRNA(3Lys)Su+G73A). COS-7 cells were transfected with either wild-type or mutant tRNA(3Lys) genes, and both the wild-type and mutant tRNA(3Lys) produced were purified by using immobilized tRNA-specific hybridization probes. Each mutant tRNA(3Lys) was tested for its ability to prime reverse transcription in vitro, either alone or in competition with wild-type tRNA(3Lys). Short RT extensions of wild-type and mutant tRNALys could be distinguished from each other by their different mobilities in one-dimensional single-stranded conformation polymorphism polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These reverse transcription products show that heat-annealed tRNA(3Lys)Su+ has the same ability as heat-annealed wild-type tRNA(3Lys) to prime RT and competes equally well with wild-type tRNA(3Lys) for priming RT. tRNA(3Lys)Su+G73A has 60% of the wild-type ability to prime RT but competes poorly with wild-type tRNA(3Lys) for priming RT. However, the priming abilities of wild-type and mutant tRNA(3) are quite different when in vivo-placed tRNA is examined. HIV-1 produced in COS cells transfected with a plasmid containing both the HIV-1 proviral DNA and DNA coding for tRNA(3Lys)Su+ contains both endogenous, cellular wild-type tRNA(3Lys) and mutant tRNA(3Lys). When total viral RNA is used as the source of primer tRNA placed onto the genomic RNA in vivo, only wild-type tRNA(3Lys) is used as a primer. If the total viral RNA is first heated and exposed to hybridizing conditions, then both the wild-type and mutant tRNA(3Lys) act as primers for RT. These results indicate that the tRNA(3Lys)Su+ packaged into the virions is unable to act as a primer for RT, and a model is proposed to explain the disparate results between heat-annealed and in vivo-placed primer tRNA.

In nature, hosts are exposed to an assemblage of parasite species that collectively form a complex community within the host. To date, however, our understanding of how within-host–parasite communities assemble and interact remains limited. Using a larval amphibian host (Pacific chorus frog, Pseudacris regilla) and two common trematode parasites (Ribeiroia ondatrae and Echinostoma trivolvis), we experimentally examined how the sequence of host exposure influenced parasite interactions within hosts. While there was no evidence that the parasites interacted when hosts were exposed to both parasites simultaneously, we detected evidence of both intraspecific and interspecific competition when exposures were temporally staggered. However, the strength and outcome of these priority effects depended on the sequence of addition, even after accounting for the fact that parasites added early in host development were more likely to encyst compared to parasites added later. Ribeiroia infection success was reduced by 14 % when Echinostoma was added prior to Ribeiroia, whereas no such effect was noted for Echinostoma when Ribeiroia was added first. Using a novel fluorescent-labeling technique that allowed us to track Ribeiroia infections from different exposure events, we also discovered that, similar to the interspecific interactions, early encysting parasites reduced the encystment success of later arriving parasites by 41 %, which could be mediated by host immune responses and/or competition for space. These results suggest that parasite identity interacts with host immune responses to mediate parasite interactions within the host, such that priority effects may play an important role in structuring parasite communities within hosts. This knowledge can be used to assess host–parasite interactions within natural communities in which environmental conditions can lead to heterogeneity in the timing and composition of host exposure to parasites.
