A liquid atomiser composed of a piezoelectric transducer and a metal plate with numerous micro-apertures is studied to identify the most influential factors on its atomising performance. The Taguchi method is employed in the experiment design and analysis of the study on how each factor acts in the atomising process. An optimal condition is determined for producing a stream of droplets. The study shows that the droplet size and the spraying velocity are suitable for ophthalmic drug delivery application, with an even distribution of the drug over most of the eyeball surface area due to the controllable cross-sectional area of the droplet stream. This greatly improves the treatment effectiveness and efficiency of eye therapy. Finally, a structure of the ophthalmic drug delivery system is proposed.

This paper presents a technique to detect the delamination between the steel bars and concrete in the reinforced concrete structures. The piezoelectric components are mounted on reinforcing bars that are embedded in RC structures as sensors and actuators to generate and record the signal, which is sensitive to the delamination between the steel bars and concrete. The experimental study is carried out on a concrete slab with different debonds between the rebars and concrete. The test results show that the delamination between the rebars and concrete can be detected with the embedded piezoelectric sensors and actuators.

This paper focuses on a novel piezoelectric energy harvester for nanofiber PVDF to capture energy from vibration environment. A Resembling CMOS(R-CMOS) circuit consisting of two pMOS transistors and two nMOS transistors is presented, which can greatly increase the energy efficiency and reduce the power dissipation tremendously. Meanwhile, the novel harvester supplies smooth direct current. Simulation result of MULTISIM has shown that by using this novel piezoelectric energy harvester the input voltage (5v) can be rectified to be an output voltage (4.24v). The voltage conversion rate of the novel harvester is as high as 84.8% which is much larger than the rate of traditional rectifier circuit. Its potential application is in micro sensors, wireless transducers, and sensor networks.

Traditional rectifier circuit can convert AC to DC, but some disadvantages can't be avoided, such as small output current, high power consumption, low conversion efficiency. This paper designs a new type of rectifier voltage-multiplier circuit named MR MOS circuit. It uses a low let-through resistance MOS tube to replace the conventional rectifier diode, and adds the voltage-multiplying factor to the synchronous input port. Therefore, it can improve the rectifier effect and increase the output voltage. By the simulation result of Synopsys Saber Platform, it shows that the new type circuit can implement the rectification and voltage-multiplying by the simulating output pulse voltage of nano fiber made in Deakin University as the source of excitation. It can provide the basic theoretical of the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) development, and has certain reference significance to the development of piezoelectricity technology. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications.

Some aspects of numerical simulation of Lamb wave propagation in composite laminates using the finite element models with explicit dynamic analysis are addressed in this study. To correctly and efficiently describe the guided-wave excited/received by piezoelectric actuators/sensors, effective models of surface-bounded flat PZT disks based on effective force, moment and displacement are developed. Different finite element models for Lamb wave excitation, collection and propagation in isotropic plate and quasi-isotropic laminated composite are evaluated using continuum elements (3-D solid element) and structural elements (3-D shell element), to elaborate the validity and versatility of the proposed actuator/sensor models.

This paper presents a novel optical fibre based micro contact probe system with high sensitivity and repeatability. In this optical fibre probe with a fused spherical tip, a fibre Bragg grating has been utilized as a strain sensor in the probe stem. When the probe tip contacts the surface of the part, a strain will be induced along the probe stem and will produce a Bragg wavelength shift. The contact signal can be issued once the wavelength shift signal is produced and demodulated. With the fibre grating sensor element integrated into the probe directly, the probe system shows a high sensitivity. In this work, the strain distributions along the probe stem with the probe under axial and lateral load are analysed. A simulation of the strain distribution was performed using the finite element package ANSYS 11. Performance tests using a piezoelectric transducer stage with a displacement resolution of 1.5 nm yielded a measurement resolution of 60 nm under axial loading.

This paper presents design of an electrostatic wide band shunt capacitive coupling RF MEMS switch with low actuation voltage. The key factors of the RF MEMS switch design are the proper scattering parameters, low actuation voltage, and the cost of the fabrication process. An overview of the recent low actuation voltage RFMEMS switches has been presented. These designs still suffer from the complexity of process, lack of reliability, limitation of frequency band, and process cost. RF characteristics of a shunt RF MEMS switches are specified mostly by coupling capacitor in upstate position of the membrane Cu. This capacitor is in trade-off with actuation voltage. In this work, the capacitor is eliminated by using two short high impedance transmission lines, at the input and output of the switch. The simulation results demonstrate an improvement in the RF characteristic of the switch.

A concrete–steel interface spectral element is developed to study the guided wave propagation along the steel rebar in the concrete. Scalar damage parameters characterizing changes in the interface (debonding damage) are incorporated into the formulation of the spectral finite element that is used for damage detection of reinforced concrete structures. Experimental tests are carried out on a reinforced concrete beam with embedded piezoelectric elements to verify the performance of the proposed model and algorithm. Parametric studies are performed to evaluate the effect of different damage scenarios on wave propagation in the reinforced concrete structures. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that the method is effective to model wave propagation along the steel rebar in concrete and promising to detect damage in the concrete–steel interface.

Our aim was to assess the impact of motor activity and of arousing stimuli on respiratory rate in the awake rats. The study was performed in male adult Sprague–Dawley (SD, n = 5) and Hooded Wistar (HW, n = 5) rats instrumented for ECG telemetry. Respiratory rate was recorded using whole-body plethysmograph, with a piezoelectric sensor attached for the simultaneous assessment of motor activity. All motor activity was found to be associated with an immediate increase in respiratory rate that remained elevated for the whole duration of movement; this was reflected by: i) bimodal distribution of respiratory intervals (modes for slow peak: 336 ± 19 and 532 ± 80 ms for HW and SD, p < 0.05; modes for fast peak 128 ± 6 and 132 ± 7 ms for HW and SD, NS); and ii) a tight correlation between total movement time and total time of tachypnoea, with an R2 ranging 0.96–0.99 (n = 10, p < 0001). The extent of motor-related tachypnoea was significantly correlated with the intensity of associated movement. Mild alerting stimuli produced stereotyped tachypnoeic responses, without affecting heart rate: tapping the chamber raised respiratory rate from 117 ± 7 to 430 ± 15 cpm; sudden side move — from 134 ± 13 to 487 ± 16 cpm, and turning on lights — from 136 ± 12 to 507 ± 14 cpm (n = 10; p < 0.01 for all; no inter-strain differences). We conclude that: i) sniffing is an integral part of the generalized arousal response and does not depend on the modality of sensory stimuli; ii) tachypnoea is a sensitive index of arousal; and iii) respiratory rate is tightly correlated with motor activity.

Randomly orientated electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofiber membranes were directly used as active layers to make mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion devices. Without any extra poling treatment, the device can generate high electrical outputs upon receiving a mechanical impact. The device also showed long-term working stability and ability to drive electronic devices. Such a nanofiber membrane device may serve as a simple but efficient energy source for self-powered electronics.
