As one class of the most important supramolecular functional materials, gels formed by low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) have many important applications. The key important parameters affecting the in-use performance of a gel are determined by the hierarchical fiber network structures. Fiber networks consisting of weakly interacting multiple domains are commonly observed in gels formed by LMWGs. The rheological properties, particularly the elasticity, of a gel with such a fiber network are weak due to the weak interactions between the individual domains. As achieving desirable rheological properties of such a gel is practically relevant, in this work, we demonstrate the engineering of gels with such a type of fiber network by controlling crystallization of the gelator. Two example gels formed by a glutamic acid derivative in a non-ionic surfactant Tween 80 and in propylene glycol were engineered by controlling the thermodynamic driving force for crystallization. For a fixed gelator concentration, the thermodynamic driving force was manipulated by controlling the temperature for fiber crystallization. It was observed that there exists an optimal temperature at which a gel with maximal elasticity can be fabricated. This will hopefully provide guidelines for producing high performance soft materials by engineering their fiber network structures.

In an effort to compare the disturbances in leg muscle pH during sprint running, muscle biopsies were obtained from the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscles of six healthy men (three endurance-trained and three nonendurance-trained) before and after a treadmill sprint run (TSR) to fatigue (54-105 s) at roughly 125% of their aerobic capacities. Following the TSR, repeated blood samples were taken from a hand vein and later analyzed for pH, PCO2, and lactic acid (HLa). The muscle specimens were analyzed in duplicate for pH and HLa. Resting-muscle pH was 7.03 +/- 0.02 (means +/- SE) and 7.04 +/- 0.01 for the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscles, respectively. At the termination of the TSR, the pH in these muscles was 6.88 +/- 0.05 and 6.86 +/- 0.03, respectively. After a 400-m timed run on the track, the pH in the gastrocnemius of four of the subjects averaged 6.63 +/- 0.03, while blood pH and HLa were 7.10 +/- 0.03 and 12.3 mM, respectively. Although no differences in pH and HLa were observed between the vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius muscles at the end of the treadmill trial, it is speculated that the lesser disturbance in acid-base balance seen in endurance performers may have been due to a lesser production of metabolites in their running musculature when compared to nonendurance performers.

In this paper, a new amino acid derivative, namely Adenine-L-Alanine ramification (ALAR) was synthesized and investigated as a green corrosion inhibitor for X80 pipeline steel in 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid solution using the weight loss, AC impedance, and polarization curve method. The structure of the derivative was characterized by IR and UV–vis spectrum. The weight loss and AC impedance found that the inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in concentration of the inhibitor but decreased with rise in temperature, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attains 91.26% in 8 × 10−2 g/L concentration at 30 °C. The polarization studies showed that the studied amino acid derivative can be used as a corrosion inhibitor. The surface of inhibited and uninhibited specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and the adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The quantum chemical descriptors such as the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital, energy of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were calculated and the inhibition mechanism can be analyzed by the distribution of electrons. Analysis indicated that the inhibitor molecular and empty d orbital of metal forms the coordination bond, covers on the surface of metal, and prevents corrosion reaction.

Retinoic acid (RA), the main active vitamin A derivative, is crucial for embryo development, regulating cellular processes, embryo patterning and organogenesis. Many studies performed in mammalian or avian models have successfully undertaken the investigation of the role played by RA during embryogenesis. Since the early 1980s, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a powerful developmental model to study the in vivo role of RA during embryogenesis. Unlike mammalian models, zebrafish embryogenesis is external, not only allowing the observation of the translucent embryo from the earliest steps but also providing an easily accessible system for pharmacological treatment or genetic approaches. Therefore, zebrafish research largely participates in deciphering the role of RA during development. This review aims at illustrating different concepts of RA signaling based on the research performed on zebrafish. Indeed, RA action relies on a multitude of cross-talk with other signaling pathways and requires a coordinated, dynamic and fine-regulation of its level and activity in both temporal and spatial dimensions. This review also highlights major advances that have been discovered using zebrafish such as the observation of the RA gradient in vivo for the first time, the effects of RA signaling in brain patterning, its role in establishing left-right asymmetry and its effects on the development of a variety of organs and tissues including the heart, blood, bone and fat. This review demonstrates that the zebrafish is a convenient and powerful model to study retinoic acid signaling during vertebrate embryogenesis. Five new organotin(IV) complexes of composition [Bz2SnL1]n (1), [Bz3SnL1HH2O] (2), [Me2SnL2H2O] (3), [Me2SnL3] (4) and [Bz3SnL3H]n (5) (where L1 = (2S)-2-([(E)-(4-hydroxypentan-2-ylidene)]amino)-4-methylpentanoate, L2 = (rac)-2-([(E)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]amino)-4-methylpentanoate and L3 = (2S)- or (rac)-2-([(E)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]amino)-4-methylpentanoate) were synthesized and characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 119Sn NMR and infrared spectroscopic techniques. The crystal structure of 2 reveals a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry around the tin atom where the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate ligand and a water ligand occupy the axial positions, while the three benzyl ligands are located at the equatorial positions. On the other hand, the analogous derivative of enantiopure L3H (5) consists of polymeric chains, in which the ligand-bridged tin atoms adopt the same trans-Bz3SnO2 trigonal-bipyramidal configuration and are now coordinated to a phenolic oxygen atom instead of H2O. In 2, the OH hydrogen of the ketoimine substituent has moved to the nearby nitrogen atom while in the salicylidene derivative 5, the OH is located almost midway between the phenolic oxygen atom and the nitrogen atom of the C=N group. For the dibenzyltin derivative 1, a polymeric chain structure is observed as a result of a long intermolecular SnO bond involving the exocyclic carbonyl oxygen atom from the tridentate ligand of a neighbouring tin-complex unit. The tin atom in this complex has distorted octahedral coordination geometry. In contrast, the racemic dimethyltin(IV) complexes 3 and 4 display discrete monomeric structures with a distorted octahedral- and trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, respectively. The structures show that the coordination mode of the Schiff base ligand depends primarily on the number of bulky benzyl ligands (R) at the tin atom, as indeed found in the structures of related complexes where R = phenyl. With three bulky R groups, the tridentate chelating O,N,O coordination mode is preferred, whereas with fewer or less bulky R ligands, only the carboxylate and hydroxy groups are involved, which leads to polymers. Larvicidal efficacies of two of the new tribenzyltin(IV) complexes (2 and 5) were assessed on the second larval instar of Anopheles stephensi mosquito larvae and compared with two triphenyltin(IV) analogues, [Ph3SnL1H]n and [Ph3SnL3H]n. The results demonstrate that the compounds containing Sn-Ph ligands are more effective than those with Sn-Bz ligands.
