The present study was concerned with the impact of pubertal development, relationships with peers and perceived pressure from the media on body dissatisfaction and body change behaviors among adolescent boys and girls. In particular, the study investigated the underresearched area of strategies to increase weight and muscle. The exploration of body change strategies among adolescent boys has been a neglected area of research. Methods: Respondents were 1185 adolescents (527 males, 598 females) who were enrolled in Grades 7 and 9. Participants completed measures of pubertal development, media and peer influence, body dissatisfaction and strategies to lose weight, increase weight and to increase muscle. Results: The findings demonstrated that girls were more likely than boys to adopt strategies to lose weight, whereas boys were more likely to adopt strategies to increase muscle tone (but not weight). For boys in both Years 7 and 9, the main predictors of body change strategies were puberty and, to a lesser extent, perceived popularity with peers. The major influences for Years 7 and 9 girls were puberty and the media, but these mainly focused on weight loss. For Year 9 girls, perceived popularity with opposite-sex peers also predicted body dissatisfaction and strategies to increase muscle tone. Conclusion: The implications of these findings for understanding factors related to a range of body change strategies for adolescent boys and girls are discussed.

Objective: To develop a new form of the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) for muscle-tone assessment that combines the MAS score with the passive muscle-stretching velocity during the assessment of muscle tone, resulting in a measure that has higher intertester reliability than the MAS.

Design: Twanty-two volunteer subjects with spinal cord injuries at a tertiary care outpatient and inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation center affiliated with a university were recruited for this study.

Results: A decision tree in which V-MAS scores were obtained was developed. The data obtained from three independent raters, when adjusted by means of the V-MAS, showed an excellent interrater reliability.

Conclusions: Results indicated that the V-MAS is a more reliable measure. In addition, the resulting units of the V-MAS, ranging from 0 to 1, are of the same form as pendulum test data. The V-MAS method is quite simple to use because the rater need only measure the angular range and duration of the passive movement to calculate average velocity during the MAS assessment in addition to the normal MAS rating of muscle tone.

In this study, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulation of the pulmocutaneous vasculature of the toad, Bufo marinus was investigated. In vitro myography demonstrated the presence of a neural NO signaling mechanism in both arteries. Vasodilation induced by nicotine was inhibited by the soluble guanylyl cyclase (GC) inhibitor, 1H-(1,2,4)oxadiazolo(4,3-a)quinoxalin-1-one, and the NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor, Nω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). Removal of the endothelium had no significant effect on the vasodilation. Furthermore, pretreatment with N5-(1-imino-3-butenyl)-L-ornithine (vinyl-L-NIO), a more specific inhibitor of neural NOS, caused a significant decrease in the nicotine-induced dilation. In the pulmonary artery only, a combination of L-NNA and the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, CGRP(8-37), completely blocked the nicotine-induced dilation. In both arteries, the vasodilation was also significantly decreased by glibenclamide, an ATP-sensitive K+ (K+ATP) channel inhibitor. Levcromakalim, a K+ATP channel opener, caused a dilation that was blocked by glibenclamide in both arteries. In the pulmonary artery, NO donor-mediated dilation was significantly decreased by pretreatment with glibenclamide. The physiological data were supported by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, which demonstrated NOS in perivascular nerve fibers but not the endothelium of the arteries. These results indicate that the pulmonary and cutaneous arteries of B. marinus are regulated by NO from nitrergic nerves rather than NO released from the endothelium. The nitrergic vasodilation in the arteries appears to be caused, in part, via activation of K+ATP channels. Thus, NO could play an important role in determining pulmocutaneous blood flow and the magnitude of cardiac shunting.

Nitric oxide control of large systemic blood vessels of the cane toad, Bufo marinus is provided by nitrergic nerves. However, the involvement of nitrergic nerves in the regulation of small blood vessels has yet to be determined. This study investigated the nitric oxide (NO) control of the mesenteric arteries (MA) of B. marinus. Immunohistochemistry and NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry demonstrated a dense plexus of nitrergic nerves in the MA of B. marinus. MAs (~ 500–700µm in diameter) were mounted in a myograph and placed under an initial tension equivalent to their normal diameter. MAs were pre-constricted with the thromboxane A2 mimetic, U46619, prior to the addition of putative, vasodilatory chemicals. Acetylcholine caused a vasodilation that was endothelium-independent, because removal of the endothelium had no effect on the dilation. The response to acetylcholine was blocked by the NOS inhibitor, L-NNA, demonstrating that the effect was NO-dependent. Interestingly, nicotine also caused a dilation that was not affected by removal of the endothelium, but was significantly inhibited by L-NNA and the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, CGRP(8–37). These findings indicate that the MA of B. marinus are controlled by NO released from nitrergic nerves. In addition, a component of the response to applied nicotine appears to be mediated CGRP, which is probably released from sensory nerves.

An abundance of research has examined craving and affective responses to alcohol; however, minimal emphasis has been placed on the relationship between craving and affective states at specific time points of alcohol consumption. Fifty-nine university students (28 light drinkers, 31 heavy drinkers) completed assessments of craving, and positive and negative affect at baseline (Time 1), immediately following consumption of a standard drink of alcohol (Time 2), and 20 min post consumption (Time 3). In light drinkers, craving was positively correlated with positive affect at all 3 time points. In heavy drinkers, craving was only correlated with positive affect at Time 2. There were no associations between craving and negative affect at any time point in either group. A subsequent profile analysis revealed parallel profiles of craving and positive affect over time in light drinkers, but not heavy drinkers. At 20 min post alcohol consumption, a moderated regression showed that the relationship between craving and positive affect weakened as level of alcohol use increased. These findings suggest that craving is positively associated with positive affect in light drinkers, but as levels of drinking escalate, this association dissipates.

Development of the foetal autonomic nervous system can be indirectly understood by looking at the changes in beat to beat variability in foetal heart rates. This study presents Tone-Entropy (T-E) analysis of foetal heart rate variability (HRV) at multiple lags (1–8) to understand the influence of gestational ages (early and late) on the development of the foetal autonomic nervous system (ANS). The analysis was based on foetal electrocardiograms (FECGs) of 46 healthy foetuses of 20–32 weeks (early group) and 22 foetuses of 35–41 weeks (late group). Tone represents sympatho-vagal balance and entropy the total autonomic activities. Results show that tone increases and entropy decreases at all lags for the late foetus group. On the other hand, tone decreases and entropy increases at lags 1–4 in the early foetus group. Increasing tone in late foetuses might represent significant maturation of sympathetic nervous systems because foetuses approaching to delivery period need increased sympathetic activity. T-E could be quantitative clinical index to determine the early foetuses from late ones on the basis of maturation of autonomic nervous system.

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is an irreversible condition affecting the autonomic nervous system, which leads to abnormal functioning of the visceral organs and affects critical body functions such as blood pressure, heart rate and kidney filtration. This study presents multi-lag Tone-Entropy (T-E) analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) at multiple lags as a screening tool for CAN. A total of 41 ECG recordings were acquired from diabetic subjects with definite CAN (CAN+) and without CAN (CAN-) and analyzed. Tone and entropy values of each patient were calculated for different beat sequence lengths (len: 50-900) and lags (m: 1-8). The CAN- group was found to have a lower mean tone value compared to that of CAN+ group for all m and len, whereas the mean entropy value was higher in CAN- than that in CAN+ group. Leave-one-out (LOO) cross-validation tests using a quadratic discriminant (QD) classifier were applied to investigate the performance of multi-lag T-E features. We obtained 100 % accuracy for tone and entropy with len = 250 and m = {2, 3} settings, which is better than the performance of T-E technique based on lag m = 1. The results demonstrate the usefulness of multi-lag T-E analysis over single lag analysis in CAN diagnosis for risk stratification and highlight the change in autonomic nervous system modulation of the heart rate associated with cardiac autonomic neuropathy.

The heart rate asymmetry (HRA) is a disproportionate distribution of heart rate signal. The current study was designed to assess the changes in HRA in experimental conditions using Poincaré plot during parasympathetic blockade (atropine infusion) and parasympathetic enhancement (scopolamine administration). After atropine infusion, the heart rate variability in 5 out of 8 subjects was found asymmetric. In contrast, all 8 subjects were found to be asymmetric during scopolamine administration. The physiological relevance of HRA was demonstrated by showing correlation with standard frequency domain parameters during all phases of the experiment. The deviation of asymmetry index (GI ( p )) from symmetric range was further analyzed, which was maximum during scopolamine administration and minimum during atropine infusion. These findings suggest that parasympathetic block reduces the prevalence of HRA, and has significant correlation of GI ( p ) with frequency domain features of HRV analysis.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of strategies to both decrease weight and increase muscle tone on negative (depression, anxiety) and positive affect among adolescent males and females. The respondents were 1185 adolescents (587 males, 598 females) who were enrolled in grades 7 and 9 (mean age for MALES=13.22 years; mean age for FEMALES=13.21 years). Respondents completed the Body Image and Body Change Inventory that assessed body image satisfaction, body image importance, body change strategies to decrease weight, body change strategies to increase muscle tone, and food supplements. Respondents also completed the Pubertal Development Scale, the depression and anxiety scales of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, and the positive affect items from the Positive and Negative Affect Scale. Structural equation modelling was used to determine how body satisfaction and importance, body change strategies, and puberty impacted on depression, anxiety, and positive affect. The results demonstrated that for both boys and girls, there was a strong association between body change strategies and negative affect. For boys, body dissatisfaction did not predict negative affect, although this was a strong predictor for girls. Body change strategies did not strongly predict positive affect for either boys or girls, although body image satisfaction was a strong predictor for both genders. The implications of these findings for obtaining a better understanding of the role of pubertal development, body image, and body change strategies in predicting positive and negative affect among adolescent males and females are discussed.

This study investigated the nature of body image and body change strategies, as well as the sociocultural influences on these variables, among a group of 1,266 adolescents (622 males, 644 females). In particular, it investigated weight gain and increased muscle, as well as weight loss. It was found that females were less satisfied with their bodies and were more likely to adopt strategies to lose weight, whereas males were more likely to adopt strategies to increase weight and muscle tone. Respondents with higher body mass index (BMI) evidenced greater body dissatisfaction and more weight loss strategies, but there were no differences between BMI groups in weight gain or strategies to increase muscles. Weight gain and strategies to increase muscles were more likely to be undertaken by older adolescents, but there were no grade level differences in weight loss. Media influences to alter weight, as well as feedback from mother, father, and both male and female peers, were greater for females. There were few grade level or BMI differences in regard to any of the sociocultural influences. The importance of these findings in terms of providing a better understanding of factors which may lead to a disturbed body image and body change disorders, particularly among adolescent boys, is discussed.

This article is concerned with the development and evaluation of the Perceived Sociocultural Influences on Body Image and Body Change Questionnaire. The scale was designed to assess the perceived nature of feedback received from mother, father, best male friend, and best female friend to gain weight, lose weight, and increase muscle tone. The perceived feedback from the media on each of these areas also was assessed. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted with 240 adolescent boys (mean age = 13.83 years) and 204 adolescent girls (mean age = 13.70 years). A 3-factor structure was found for the 4 scales that related to perceived feedback from mother, father, best male friend, and best female friend. Feedback on muscle tone loaded with both weight loss and weight gain. The three factors related to (a) general feedback; (b) encourage, tease, and modeling to gain weight and increase muscle tone, and (c) encourage, tease, and modeling to lose weight and increase muscle tone. The factor structure and the items that made up these factors were the same for both boys and girls for each of the 4 scales. The Perceived Media Influences Scale formed 3 factors for girls. These factors related to gaining weight, losing weight, and increasing muscle tone. For boys, the same 9 items formed a single factor. The same items were retained for boys and girls. A confirmatory factor analysis with 822 adolescents (382 boys, mean age = 14.02 years; 440 girls, mean age = 13.82 years) confirmed the previously described factor structure. These results demonstrate that the Perceived Sociocultural Influences on Body Image and Body Change Questionnaire is able to assess body image and body change strategies that are relevant for both boys and girls.

The aim of the present study was to examine the level of body image disturbance among adolescent boys and to determine how body image disturbance was related to body change techniques. Twenty boys from year 7 (mean age = 12.55 years, SD = 0.61) and 20 boys from year 9 (mean age = 14.85 years, SD = 0.59) were interviewed individually about their body image and body change strategies. The boys were questioned about the importance and their satisfaction with their weight, body size, body shape, muscle tone and parts of their body and the frequency with which they used the following techniques: eating less to lose weight, eating more to gain weight, and exercise to change body size, shape or muscle tone. The results demonstrated that of those boys who wanted to change their body (50 per cent), 12 wanted to lose weight and eight wanted to gain weight. The most frequent strategy used to change body size or shape was exercise, rather than changing eating patterns. Year 7 boys were more satisfied with their weight than year 9 boys, and boys with a larger body mass index (BMI) were less satisfied with their muscle tone and more likely to change their eating habits to decrease their body size or shape than boys with a smaller BMI. The implications of these findings for obtaining a better understanding of how male body image and body change strategies are different from girls are discussed.

This study aimed to localize and characterize natriuretic peptide binding sites in the urinary bladder of Bufo marinus and to then examine the effect of natriuretic peptides on the bladder vascular tone and water reabsorption in isolated perfused bladder preparations. Specific 125I-rat atrial natriuretic peptide (125I-rANP) binding sites were present on blood vessels, muscle, and epithelium. In tissue sections and/or isolated membranes, the binding was completely displaced by frog ANP, rat ANP, and porcine C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP; membranes only). However, a reduction in binding was observed after incubation with 125I-rANP and 1 μM of the natriuretic peptide receptor-C (NPR-C) ligand C-ANF, but residual binding remained suggesting the presence of two distinct binding sites. Electrophoresis of bladder membranes cross-linked to 125I-rANP identified two bands at approximately 70 and 140 kDa that correspond to the monomeric mass of NPR-C and the guanylate cyclase receptors, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of natriuretic peptide receptor-A and NPR-C mRNA in the bladder was demonstrated with reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. In addition, rat ANP, frog ANP, and porcine CNP stimulated a significant increase in cGMP generation in bladder membrane preparations, which indicated the presence of guanylate cyclase-linked receptors. In perfused bladder preparations, arginine vasotocin increased perfusion pressure and water permeability. The infusion of frog ANP or porcine CNP failed to alter perfusion pressure or water reabsorption in the presence or absence of arginine vasotocin. This study identified a well-developed natriuretic peptide receptor system in the urinary bladder of B. marinus but the function of the receptors remains unclear.

This study investigated the mechanisms by which nitric oxide (NO) regulates the dorsal aorta and the intestinal vein of the Australian short-finned eel Anguilla australis. NADPH diaphorase histochemistry and immunohistochemistry using a mammalian endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS) antibody could not demonstrate NOS in the endothelium of either blood vessel; however, NOS could be readily demonstrated in the endothelium of the rat aorta that was used as a control. Both blood vessels contained NADPH diaphorase positive nerve fibres and nerve bundles, and immunohistochemistry using a neural NOS antibody showed a similar distribution of neural NOS immunoreactivity in the perivascular nerves. In vitro organ bath physiology showed that a NO/soluble guanylyl cyclase (GC) system is present in the dorsal aorta and the intestinal vein, since the soluble GC inhibitor oxadiazole quinoxalin-1 (ODQ; 10–5 mol l–1) completely abolished the vasodilatory effect of the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 10–4 mol l–1). In addition, nicotine (3x10–4 mol l–1) mediated a vasodilation that was not affected by removal of the endothelium. The nicotine-mediated dilation was blocked by the NOS inhibitor, Nω-nitro-arginine (L-NNA; 10–4 mol l–1), and ODQ (10–5 mol l–1). More specifically, the neural NOS inhibitor, Nω-propyl-L-arginine (10–5 mol l–1), significantly decreased the dilation induced by nicotine (3x10–4 mol l–1). Furthermore, indomethacin (10–5 mol l–1) did not affect the nicotine-mediated dilation, suggesting that prostaglandins are not involved in the response. Finally, the calcium ionophore A23187 (3x10–6 mol l–1) caused an endothelium-dependent dilation that was abolished in the presence of indomethacin. We propose the absence of an endothelial NO system in eel vasculature and suggest that neurally derived NO contributes to the maintenance of vascular tone in this species. In addition, we suggest that prostaglandins may act as endothelially derived relaxing factors in A. australis.
