This paper considers a class of uncertain, nonlinear differential state delayed control systems and presents a reduced-order observer design procedure to asymptotically estimate any vector state functionals. The method proposed involves decomposition of the delayed portion of the system into two parts: a matched and mismatched part. Provided that the rank of the mismatched part is less than the number of the outputs, a reduced-order linear functional observer, with any prescribed stability margin, can be constructed by using a simple procedure. A numerical example is given to illustrate the new design procedure and its features.

A novel chemiluminescence flow injection procedure for the determination of As(III) in aqueous samples is described. The method involves injection of As(III) samples into a 1% (m/v) sodium hexametaphosphate in 0.02 M H2SO4 carrier stream, which then merges at a Y-piece with a reagent stream consisting of potassium permanganate (5.0 × 10−5 M) made up in the acidic sodium hexametaphosphate carrier solution. The chemiluminescence intensity of the resulting reaction mixture was measured at a photomultiplier tube operated at a voltage of 0.93 kV. Under optimized conditions, the method is characterised by a linear range from 0.5 to 5.0 μg l−1, a detection limit of 0.3 μg l−1 and a sampling frequency of 150 h−1. The effects of common anionic and cationic interferences were investigated, and it was found that the only ions to cause serious interference were those which react with potassium permanganate, namely sulphide, iodide and ferrous.

There are many existing and potential industrial and commercial applications for intelligent agents in the literature. The very challenging issue for these applications is to "do what intelligent agents should do". The BDI (beliefs, desires, intentions) architecture is presented to solve this challenge, and it has attracted much attention. The main difficulty for this architecture is the formalization problem. In this paper, we discuss the "procedure descriptive framework", which is a method for formalizing the BDI architecture. We present decision models for intelligent agents in this framework. This research provides a technique for online agents to form beliefs and make decisions according to the current uncertain environment

We have developed expedient and reliable methods to isolate cyclosporin synthetase for in vitro biosynthesis of cyclosporins. We have examined enzyme purification strategies suited to large-scale processing and present a chromatographic sequence that serves as a pilot model for industrial scale preparation of cyclosporin synthetase from cyclosporin producing fungi. A chromatographic sequence consisting of ammonium sulfate precipitation → gel filtration → hydrophobic interaction chromatography → anion exchange chromatography, yielded an electrophoretically homogeneous cyclosporin synthetase preparation (Coomassie G-250 brilliant blue staining). Furthermore, a native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis system was developed for the isolation of active cyclosporin synthetase enzyme from crude extracts of cyclosporin producing fungi. The environmental factors affecting enzyme stability and the continuity of the in vitro cyclosporin biosynthetic reaction-temperature, pH, and substrate depletion were assessed and manageable conditions have been defined for sustainable cyclosporin biosynthesis with enzyme isolates. Cyclosporin synthetase exhibited an optimal temperature range of 24–29 °C and a pH optimum of 7.6. The native enzyme displayed a pI of 5.7, as determined by isoelectric focusing. The industrial implementation of an in vitro biosynthetic approach could potentially prove useful for the production of important therapeutic cyclosporins which occur as only minor fermentation by-products.

Construction of a confidence interval for process capability index CPM is often based on a normal approximation with fixed sample size. In this article, we describe a different approach in constructing a fixed-width confidence interval for process capability index CPM with a preassigned accuracy by using a combination of bootstrap and sequential sampling schemes. The optimal sample size required to achieve a preassigned confidence level is obtained using both two-stage and modified two-stage sequential procedures. The procedure developed is also validated using an extensive simulation study.

In nonparametric statistics the functional form of the relationship between the response variable and its associated predictor variables is unspecified but it is assumed to be a smooth function. We develop a procedure for constructing a fixed width confidence interval for the predicted value at a specified point of the independent variable. The optimal sample size for constructing this interval is obtained using a two stage sequential procedure which relies on some asymptotic properties of the Nadaraya--Watson and local linear estimators. Finally, a large scale simulation study demonstrates the applicability of the developed procedure for small and moderate sample sizes. The procedure developed here should find wide applicability since many practical problems which arise in industry involve estimating an unknown function.

The heart muscle of a cardiac arrest victim continues to accumulate damage throughout its lifetime. This reduces the heart's ability to pump sufficient oxygen and nutrient blood to meet the body's needs. Medical researchers have shown that direct injection of pre-harvested skeletal myoblast cells into the heart can restore some muscle function [1]. This operative procedure usually necessitates the surgeon to open a patient's chest. The open chest procedure is usually a lengthy process and often extends the recovery time of the patient. Alternatively, a high accuracy surgical aid robotic system can be used to assist the thoracoscopic surgery [2][3]. While the robotic surgical method aids faster patient recovery, a less experienced surgeon can potentially cause damage to surrounding tissue.

This paper presents a study into the development of a virtual haptically-enabled heart myoblast injection simulation environment, which can be used to train new surgeons to get hands on experience with the process. The paper also discusses the development of a generic constraint motion technique for needle insertion. Experiments on human performance measures and efficacy, while interacting with haptic feedback training models, are also presented. The experiment involved 10 operators, with each person repeating the needle insertion and injection 10 times. A notable improvement in the task execution time with the number of repetitions was observed. Operators improved their time by up to 300% compared to their first training attempt for a static heart scenario. Under a dynamic heart motion, operator's performance was slightly lower, with the successful rate of completing the experiment reduced from 84% to 75%.

This article argues for a need to reform the corporate class action procedure in Australia. The reason is that the statutory procedure for an “opt out” class action is beginning to appear more like an “opt in” class action. The confusion relates to the poor drafting of Part IVA of the Federal Court of Australia Act 1976, which contains the class action procedure. The involvement of a commercial litigation funder has also contributed to the complexity in the interpretation of the law. The article provides a review of why s 33J and s 33E are conceptually difficult to apply. It highlights the key areas that require legislative amendments in order for the class action procedure to operate more effectively.
