Ten anionic compounds, including four acidic dyes, were used to dope polypyrrole powder. The effects of the dopants on density, optical absorption and conductivity of the polypyrroles were studied. The presence of the dopant in the conducting polymer matrix was verified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Density function theory (DFT) simulation was used to understand the effect of the dopants on the solid structure, optical absorption and energy band structures. Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole yielded the highest conductivity. The dye-doped polypyrrole showed an enhancement in its UV–vis optical absorption.

Polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were prepared by using microemulsion polymerization processes at 3 °C. Particle characterization was performed by using FTIR, elementary analysis, UV–vis spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The size of the nanoparticles varied from about 50 to 100 to 100 to 200 nm with the change in concentration of surfactant from 0.8 to 0.44 M. Polypyrrole nanoparticles were dedoped by a 10% NaOH solution, followed by a redoping process using a nuclear fast red kernechtrot dye, which has a sulfonate group. Dedoping changed the optical absorption properties of the nanoparticles.

Photoluminescent (PL) and optical absorption spectra of high-yield multi-wall BN nanotubes (BNNTs) were systematically investigated at room temperature in comparison with commercial hexagonal BN (h-BN) powder. The direct band gap of the BNNTs was determined to be 5.75 eV, just slightly narrower than that of h-BN powder (5.82 eV). Two Frenkel excitons with the binding energy of 1.27 and 1.35 eV were also determined. However, they were not a distinctive characteristic of the BNNTs as reported previously. Observed broad UV–visible–NIR light emission demonstrates the potential of the BNNTs as a nano light source.

A solid-state displacement reaction of Ga2O3 with Mg3N2 has been used to synthesize GaN nanocrystals by mechanochemical processing. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements indicated that the nanocrystals had a hexagonal structure and sizes ranging from 4 to 20thinspnm. Optical absorption and transmission measurement showed the bandgap of the nanocrystals was consistent with that of bulk GaN samples (3.43thinspeV). This study  demonstrates that mechanochemical processing has significant potential for the synthesis of GaN nanocrystals in a simple and efficient way.

The photodarkening phenomena of amorphous Se have been studied by the optical absorption coefficient, sound velocity and attenuation measurements. The light illumination at low temperatures induces the photodarkening, and the photodarkened state is completely recovered by annealing near 306 K corresponding to the glass transition temperature. The photodarkening is enhanced by application of pressure. The sound velocity decreases and the sound attenuation increases by the illumination at low temperature. These suggest that a structural disorder increases in the photodarkened state. Three stages are observed for the recovery process of the photodarkened specimen. The photodarkening and the recovery process are discussed on the basis of VAP (valence alternative pair) model.

Coloured conducting textiles have shown a wide range of potential applications in heating fabrics, electromagnetic wave absorption, and wearable optoelectronic devices. This research aimed at clarifying some issues occurred in the research project on coloured conductive textiles. The investigation firstly clarified a possible chemical reaction that took place between a commercial dispersing dye (Terasil Red G) and the conducting polymer polypyrrole, through chemical separation, structural identification and spectrum characterisations. Then, a series of acidic dyes were introduced into polypyrrole matrix during the vapour coating of conducting polymer on the wool fabrics. Colour and thermal stability studies were conducted. Finally, the polypyrrole nanoparticles (particle size several~200nm) were prepared by a microemulsion polymerisation technique. An acid dye was used as the dopant to re-dope the nanoparticles. The effect of the acidic dye on the optical absorption of nanoparticles was studied. Applying the conducting nanoparticles on wool fabrics may open an alternative path to achieve the coloured conducting textiles.

Perovskite praseodymium ferrite (PrFeO3) porous nanotubes are prepared by electrospinning of the precursor solution into nanofibers, subsequently by annealing the precursor fibers at a low temperature (e.g. 40 °C) and finally by calcination at a high temperature. The low temperature annealing treatment is found to play a key role in the formation of porous nanotube. The porous tubes show a perovskite-type PrFeO3 crystal characteristic with high optical absorption in the UV-visible region and an energy band gap of 1.97 eV. When compared with PrFeO3 porous nanofibers and PrFeO3 particles, the PrFeO3 porous nanotubes show better visible-light photo-catalytic ability to degrade Rhodamine B in aqueous phase because of the increased surface area and more active catalytic sites on the inner walls and outer surfaces.

In this work, silica embedded with a spirooxazine dye was prepared by hydrolysis of silanes that bear a nonhydrolyzable group of different structures through a sol-gel route in the presence of a spirooxazine dye, and the pore dimension and photochromic properties of photochromic silica coatings on fabric were studied. The pore dimension in the silica was examined by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption porosimetry. The SAXS results revealed that the distance between pores was in the range between 0.8 nm and 1.9 nm and it increased with increasing the size of the non-hydrolyzable group. Pore size measured by nitrogen adsorption porosimetry was in the range of 2.1-2.7 nm. The photochromic optical absorption was influenced mainly by the hydrophobicity of the non-hydrolyzable groups, while the color changing rates were influenced by the steric effect of the non-hydrolyzable groups and their interaction with the dye.

An approximate numerical technique for modeling optical pulse propagation through weakly scattering biological tissue is developed by solving the photon transport equation in biological tissue that includes varying refractive index and varying scattering/absorption coefficients. The proposed technique involves first tracing the ray paths defined by the refractive index profile of the medium by solving the eikonal equation using a Runge-Kutta integration algorithm. The photon transport equation is solved only along these ray paths, minimizing the overall computational burden of the resulting algorithm. The main advantage of the current algorithm is that it enables to discretise the pulse propagation space adaptively by taking optical depth into account. Therefore, computational efficiency can be increased without compromising the accuracy of the algorithm.

This article describes ultra violet (UV) light shielding behaviour of Australian grown bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens). Optical reflectance showed that untreated bamboo plant has UV absorption properties. To reveal the origin of the UV absorption property, its chemical components were extracted using several polar and non-polar solvents. The extracts in most of the polar and non-polar solvents showed UV absorption property. Protic polar solvents showed better ability to extract UV absorbing chemicals than aprotic and non-polar solvents, except hexane. The chemical components of bamboo were analysed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the findings were correlated with the UV absorbance characteristics. The results confirmed that the UV absorption ability of bamboo originates from nothing but lignin. It is thus indicated that the conventional methods to manufacture bamboo fibres, such as complete degumming or viscose methods, that involve the removal of lignin, cannot retain the unique UV absorption property of bamboo plant in bamboo fibres.

We describe a simple experiment which allows unequivocal determination of optical phase change upon reflection of light at the mica-silver interface. While the physical origin of such a phase change at the dielectric-metal interface is well understood to lie in absorption of electromagnetic energy by the metal, inconsistency and ambiguity has persisted as to what its sign and magnitude should be in the field of thin film optics. Most commonly, it has been assigned to be negative for mathematical convenience or just arbitrarily. Our finding shows that with the convention exp(-iωt) for time dependence of the electromagnetic wave, the phase change at the interface between mica and the thin silver film is necessarily positive and its magnitude falls between π and 3π/2 for silver thicknesses down to nanometres. This gives a physically reasonable correspondence to an increased equivalent thickness of the dielectric material, and it clarifies the assignment of interference orders in the harmonic series in a spectrum.

By integrating together VO2’s unique near-room-temperature (RT) semiconductor–metal (S–M) phase transition with a thin silver (Ag) layer’s plasmonic properties, VO2/Ag multilayers could present a much enhanced optical transmission change when increasing the temperature from RT to over VO2’s S–M phase-transition temperature. Changing VO2 and Ag layer thicknesses can also significantly tune their transmission and absorption properties, which could lead to a few useful designs in optoelectronic and energy-saving industries.
