With information access becoming more and more ubiquitous, there is a need for providingQoSsupport for communication that spans wired and wireless networks. For the wired side, RSVP/SBM has been widely accepted as a flow reservation scheme in IEEE 802 style LANs. Thus, it would be desirable to investigate the integration of RSVP and a flow reservation scheme in wireless LANs, as an end-to-end solution for QoS guarantee in wired-cum-wireless networks. For this purpose, we propose WRESV, a lightweight RSVPlike flow reservation and admission control scheme for IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Using WRESV, wired/wireless integration can be easily implemented by cross-layer interaction at the Access Point. Main components of the integration are RSVP-WRESV parameter mapping and the initiation of new reservation messages, depending on where senders/receivers are located. In addition, to support smooth roaming of mobile users among different basic service sets (BSS), we devise an efficient handoff scheme that considers both the flow rate demand and network resource availability for continuous QoS support. Furthermore, various optimizations for supporting multicast session and QoS re-negotiation are proposed for better performance improvement. Extensive simulation results showthat the proposed scheme is promising in enriching the QoS support of multimedia applications in heterogeneous wired-cum-wireless networks.

This simple and scalable Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS control model is acceptable for the core of the network. However, more explicit and stringent admission and reservation based QoS mechanisms are required in the wireless access segment of the network, where available resources are severely limited and the degree of traffic aggregation is not significant, thus rendering the DiffServ principles less effective. In this paper we present a suitable hybrid QoS architecture framework to address the problem. At the wireless access end, the local QoS mechanism is designed in the context of IEEE 802.11 WLAN with 802.11e QoS extensions. At the edge and over the DiffServ domain, the Fair Intelligent Congestion Control (FICC) algorithm is applied to provide fairness among traffic aggregates and control congestion at the bottleneck interface between the wireless link and the network core.

Maintaining QoS (quality of service) guaranteed communication links, and improving the energy consumption; are two aspects that received a significant consideration in the modern wireless sensor network research. This paper formulates a transmission power control problem which satisfies both considerations mentioned above. Moreover, a class of functions for an iterative controller was introduced and analyzed for its convergence. The experimental evaluation of the controller justifies the theoretical assertions as well as the applicability of the control scheme in wireless nodes with minimum measurement capabilities.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are attractive for information gathering in large-scale data rich environments. In order to fully exploit the data gathering and dissemination capabilities of these networks, energy-efficient and scalable solutions for data storage and information discovery are essential. In this paper, we formulate the information discovery problem as a load-balancing problem, with the combined aim being to maximize network lifetime and minimize query processing delay resulting in QoS improvements. We propose a novel information storage and distribution mechanism that takes into account the residual energy levels in individual sensors. Further, we propose a hybrid push-pull strategy that enables fast response to information discovery queries.

Simulations results prove the proposed method(s) of information discovery offer significant QoS benefits for global as well as individual queries in comparison to previous approaches.

The next generation of wireless networks is envisioned as convergence of heterogeneous radio access networks. Since technologies are becoming more collaborative, a possible integration between IEEE 802.16 based network and previous generation of telecommunication systems (2G, ..., 3G) must be considered. A novel quality function based vertical handoff (VHO) algorithm, based on proposed velocity and average receive power estimation algorithms is discussed in this paper. The short-time Fourier analysis of received signal strength (RSS) is employed to obtain mobile speed and average received power estimates. Performance of quality function based VHO algorithm is evaluated by means of measure of quality of service (QoS). Simulation results show that proposed quality function, brings significant gains in QoS and more efficient use of resources can be achieved.

Mobile users connected to wireless networks expect performance comparable to those on wired networks for interactive multimedia applications. Satisfying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for such applications in wireless networks is a challenging problem due to limitations of low bandwidth, high error rate and frequent disconnections of wireless channels. In addition, wireless networks suffer from varying bandwidth. In this paper we investigate object prefetching during times of connectedness and bandwidth availability to enhance user perceived connectedness. This paper presents an access model that is suitable for multimedia access in wireless networks. Access modelling for the purpose of predicting future accesses in the context of speculative prefetching has received much attention in the literature. The model recognizes that a web page, instead of just a single file, is typically a compound of several files. When it comes to making prefetch decisions, most previous studies in speculative prefetching resort to simple heuristics, such as prefetching an item with access probabilities larger than a manually tuned threshold. This paper takes a different approach. Specifically, it models the performance of the prefetcher, taking into account access predictions and resource parameters, and develops a prefetch policy based on a theoretical analysis of the model. Since the analysis considers cache as one of the resource parameters, the resulting policy integrates prefetch and cache replacement decisions. The paper investigates the effect of prefetching on network load. In order to make effective use of available resources and maximize access improvement, it is beneficial to prefetch all items with access probabilities exceeding certain threshold.

Providing real-time or continuous media (CM) application services in wireless networks poses a significant challenge, as it requires timely delivery of data in a best-effort network. In this paper, we propose a cache-based scheme for mobility-aware, CM applications. The proposed scheme exploits a previously proposed caching strategy to complement Mobile-IP by placing services closer to migrated mobile nodes. The central idea of this work is based on the migration of sessions in order to facilitate uninterrupted delivery of CM in mobile environments. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by simulation studies. In particular, the effect of the proposed scheme on several QoS parameters under varying conditions of mobility and CM data is measured.

To build the service-oriented applications in a wireless sensor network (WSN), the workflow can be utilized to compose a set of atomic services and execute the corresponding pre-designed processes. In general, WSN applications rely closely on the sensor data which are usually inaccurate or even incomplete in the resource-constrained WSN. Then, the erroneous sensor data will affect the execution of atomic services and furthermore the workflows, which form an important part in the bottom-to-up dynamics of WSN applications. In order to alleviate this issue, it is necessary to manage the workflow hierarchically. However, the hierarchical workflow management remains an open and challenging problem. In this paper, by adopting the Bloom filter as an effective connection between the sensor node layer and the upper application layer, a hierarchical workflow management approach is proposed to ensure the QoS of workflow-based WSN application . The case study and experimental evaluations demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach.

Multidimensional WSNs are deployed in complex environments to sense and collect data relating to multiple attributes (multidimensional data). Such networks present unique challenges to data dissemination, data storage and in-network query processing (information discovery). In this paper, we investigate efficient strategies for information discovery in large-scale multidimensional WSNs and propose the Adaptive MultiDimensional Multi-Resolution Architecture (A-MDMRA) that efficiently combines “push” and “pull” strategies for information discovery and adapts to variations in the frequencies of events and queries in the network to construct optimal routing structures. We present simulation results showing the optimal routing structure depends on the frequency of events and query occurrence in the network. It also balances push and pull operations in large scale networks enabling significant QoS improvements and energy savings.

The success of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployment strongly depends on the quality of service (QoS) it provides regarding issues such as data accuracy, data aggregation delays and network lifetime maximisation. This is especially challenging in data fusion mechanisms, where a small fraction of low quality data in the fusion input may negatively impact the overall fusion result. In this paper, we present a fuzzy-based data fusion approach for WSN with the aim of increasing the QoS whilst reducing the energy consumption of the sensor network. The proposed approach is able to distinguish and aggregate only true values of the collected data as such, thus reducing the burden of processing the entire data at the base station (BS). It is also able to eliminate redundant data and consequently reduce energy consumption thus increasing the network lifetime. We studied the effectiveness of the proposed data fusion approach experimentally and compared it with two baseline approaches in terms of data collection, number of transferred data packets and energy consumption. The results of the experiments show that the proposed approach achieves better results than the baseline approaches.
