This paper proposes a framework for merging inconsistent beliefs in the analysis of security protocols. The merge application is a procedure of computing the inferred beliefs of message sources and resolving the conflicts among the sources. Some security properties of secure messages are used to ensure the correctness of authentication of messages. Several instances are presented, and demonstrate our method is useful in resolving inconsistent beliefs in secure messages.

This special issue is in response to the increasing convergence between grids and pervasive computing, while different approaches exist, challenges and opportunities are numerous in this context (Parashar and Pierson, to appear). The research papers selected for this special issue represent recent progresses in the field, including works on mobile ad-hoc grids, service and data discovery, context-aware application building and context accuracy, and communication. All of these papers not only provide novel ideas and state-of-the-art techniques in the field, but also stimulate future research in the Pervasive Grid environment.

Our paper positions four-wheel drive (4WD) travel into the Australian desert by veteran or dedicated travellers as a spiritual experience in three ways: by considering the desert itself as a sacred space; the experience of such a journey as a form of ‘nature religion’; and by viewing the actual journey itself as pilgrimage. Our argument is informed by interviews with expert 4WDers to the desert. Our study might be useful in designing sustainable strategies for 4WD desert tourism, as well as for scholars from a variety of disciplines such as sustainability and environment studies, religious studies and tourism studies, to name a few.

Cell membrane changes its morphology during many physiological processes with the assistance of a solid support, such as the cytoskeleton, under an environmental stimulus. Here, a novel type of stimuli-responsive lipogel was fabricated, mimicking the changes of cell membrane. The lipogel was prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgel particle and phospholipid by a solvent-exchange method. The temperature dependent volume phase transition of pNIPAM triggers reversible transformation of the lipogel between a lipid vesicle-coated sun-like structure and a contracted hybrid sphere, through lipid merging and protrusion processes, respectively. By contrast, the salt induced pNIPAM phase transition leads to an irreversible vesicle release behaviour. The lipogel creates a unique platform for studying cell membrane behaviour and provides promising candidates in drug delivery and controlled release applications. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. This article discusses the lack of integration between criminal sanctions and employment deprivations (in the form of being dismissed from employment or disqualified from working in certain industries). Offenders who are employed in certain industries, especially the professions, often suffer a far greater net punishment upon being found guilty of a criminal offence than other offenders, thereby violating the principle of proportionality and the (related) principle of equality in the impact of sanctions. The reason that such a situation has developed is because criminal sanctions and employment deprivations have evolved from different streams of jurisprudence. This article argues that sentencers should impose a ‘net’ sanction for a criminal offence, thereby merging these streams of jurisprudence. This would require courts to be vested with the power to suspend or disqualify people from being employed in certain occupations. The legal analysis in this article focuses on case and statutory law in Australia, however, the same broad principles apply in all common law jurisdictions, including the UK. Hence, the reform proposals suggested in this article are relevant throughout the common law world.

The growing computational power requirements of grand challenge applications has promoted the need for merging high throughput computing and grid computing principles to harness computational resources distributed across multiple organisations. This paper identifies the issues in resource management and scheduling in the emerging high throughput grid computing context. We also survey and study the performance of several space-sharing and time-sharing opportunistic scheduling policies that have been developed for high throughput computing.

This work describes an error correction method based on the Euler Superpath problem. Sequence data is mapped to an Euler Superpath dynamically by Merging Transformation. With restriction and guiding rules, data consistency is maintained and error paths are separated from correct data: Error edges are mapped to the correct ones and after substitution (of error edges with right paths), corresponding errors in the sequencing data are eliminated.

Photography within the construction industry is merging into a new form of image capture and output that is a mix of conventional photography and digital imagery. As this transition takes place it is anticipated that the credibility of the image may also change within in the communication chain that links the various disciplines within the building industry. The following paper presents the development and results of a pilot survey of building professionals, which addresses the quality, content and authenticity of both conventional photography and digitally produced images used within the construction industry.

In this paper, we propose a novel feature reduction approach to group words hierarchically into clusters which can then be used as new features for document classification. Initially, each word constitutes a cluster. We calculate the mutual confidence between any two different words. The pair of clusters containing the two words with the highest mutual confidence are combined into a new cluster. This process of merging is iterated until all the mutual confidences between the un-processed pair of words are smaller than a predefined threshold or only one cluster exists. In this way, a hierarchy of word clusters is obtained. The user can decide the clusters, from a certain level, to be used as new features for document classification. Experimental results have shown that our method can perform better than other methods.

The role of social responsibility within business has been debated for decades. It appears that there is a growing understanding that doing the right thing for society can not only be good for business but is also a responsibility of the modern corporation. Causes, corporations, and society have benefited from corporate involvement with social issues. However, it also appears that in some cases, there may be potential pitfalls associated with merging social and corporate objectives. The "overcommercialization" of some activities designed to benefit society may in fact harm those that these activities are trying to help. This article examines potential pitfalls associated with cause-related marketing and provides recommendations for reducing the potential negative consequences

Research findings support the idea that workload is a significant stressor associated with a variety of deleterious psychological reactions, including burnout, in several different samples of workers. A theoretical model is put forth in the present study in which workload is seen as contributing to distress and depression. Increasingly, organisations are experiencing changes as a result of extensive downsizing, restructuring, and merging. As a result of fiscal restraint, hospitals have been forced to merge, close, downsize, and restructure. Workloads have increased among hospital staff, particularly nurses. This study applies a theoretical model to the understanding of the impact of workload on nurses employed in hospitals experiencing downsizing, particularly on their distress, burnout, and depression. Respondents were 488 nurses who were employed in hospitals that were undergoing restructuring and in which units had already been closed as a result of restructuring. Results of structural equation modeling showed that the data partially fit the model and that workload contributed substantially to levels of depression through distress reactions. Further results showed that cynicism, anger, and emotional exhaustion significantly operationalised distress reactions. This study is unique theoretically in linking anger, cynicism, and emotional exhaustion in a single model that predicts distress levels from workload. The findings that anger, cynicism, and emotional exhaustion operationalised distress indicate the importance of studying patterns of negative reactions and their consequences for depression. Implications of the results are discussed for interventions that can be taken by organisations in order to reduce workloads.

Citation matching is the problem of extracting bibliographic records from citation lists in technical papers, and merging records that represent the same publication. Generally, there are three types of data- sets in citation matching, i.e., sparse, dense and hybrid types. Typical approaches for citation matching are Joint Segmentation (Jnt-Seg) and Joint Segmentation Entity Resolution (Jnt-Seg-ER). Jnt-Seg method is effective at processing sparse type datasets, but often produces many errors when applied to dense type datasets. On the contrary, Jnt-Seg-ER method is good at dealing with dense type datasets, but insufficient when sparse type datasets are presented. In this paper we propose an alternative joint inference approach–Generalized Joint Segmentation (Generalized-Jnt-Seg). It can effectively deal with the situation when the dataset type is unknown. Especially, in hybrid type datasets analysis there is often no a priori information for choosing Jnt-Seg method or Jnt-Seg-ER method to process segmentation and entity resolution. Both methods may produce many errors. Fortunately, our method can effectively avoid error of segmentation and produce well field boundaries. Experimental results on both types of citation datasets show that our method outperforms many alternative approaches for citation matching.
