Ventricular repolarization dynamics is an important predictor of the outcome in cardiovascular diseases. Mathematical modeling of the heart rate variability (RR interval variability) and ventricular repolarization variability (QT interval variability) is one of the popular methods to understand the dynamics of ventricular repolarization. Although ECG derived respiration (EDR) was previously suggested as a surrogate of respiration, but the effect of respiratory movement on ventricular repolarization dynamics was not studied. In this study, the importance of considering the effect of respiration and the validity of using EDR as a surrogate of respiration for linear parametric modeling of ventricular repolarization variability is studied in two cases with different physiological and psychological conditions. In the first case study, we used 20 young and 20 old healthy subjects’ ECG and respiration data from Fantasia database at Physionet to analyze a bivariate QT–RR and a trivariate QT–RR–RESP or QT–RR–EDR model structure to study the aging effect on cardiac repolarization variability. In the second study, we used 16 healthy subjects’ data from drivedb (stress detection for automobile drivers) database at Physionet to do the same analysis for different psychological condition (i.e., in stressed and no stress condition). The results of our study showed that model having respiratory information (QT–RR–RESP and QT–RR–EDR) gave significantly better fit value (p < 0.05) than that of found from the QT–RR model. EDR showed statistically similar (p > 0.05) performance as that of respiration as an exogenous model input in describing repolarization variability irrespective of age and different mental conditions. Another finding of our study is that both respiration and EDR-based models can significantly (p < 0.05) differentiate the ventricular repolarization dynamics between healthy subjects of different age groups and with different psychological conditions, whereas models without respiration or EDR cannot distinguish between the groups. These results established the importance of using respiration and the validity of using EDR as a surrogate of respiration in the absence of respiration signal recording in linear parametric modeling of ventricular repolarization variability in healthy subjects.

The performance of the modified adaptive conjugate gradient (CG) algorithms based on the iterative CG method for adaptive filtering is highly related to the ways of estimating the correlation matrix and the cross-correlation vector. The existing approaches of implementing the CG algorithms using the data windows of exponential form or sliding form result in either loss of convergence or increase in misadjustment. This paper presents and analyzes a new approach to the implementation of the CG algorithms for adaptive filtering by using a generalized data windowing scheme. For the new modified CG algorithms, we show that the convergence speed is accelerated, the misadjustment and tracking capability comparable to those of the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm are achieved. Computer simulations demonstrated in the framework of linear system modeling problem show the improvements of the new modifications.

In this study, a linear parametric modeling technique was applied to model ventricular repolarization (VR) dynamics. Three features were selected from the surface ECG recordings to investigate the changes in VR dynamics in healthy and cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) participants with diabetes including heart rate variability (calculated from RR intervals), repolarization variability (calculated from QT intervals), and respiration [calculated by ECG-derived respiration (EDR)]. Surface ECGs were recorded in a supine resting position from 80 age-matched participants (40 with no cardiac autonomic neuropathy (NCAN) and 40 with CAN). In the CAN group, 25 participants had early/subclinical CAN (ECAN) and 15 participants were identified with definite/clinical CAN (DCAN). Detecting subclinical CAN is crucial for designing an effective treatment plan to prevent further cardiovascular complications. For CAN diagnosis, VR dynamics was analyzed using linear parametric autoregressive bivariate (ARXAR) and trivariate (ARXXAR) models, which were estimated using 250 beats of derived QT, RR, and EDR time series extracted from the first 5 min of the recorded ECG signal. Results showed that the EDR-based models gave a significantly higher fitting value (p < 0.0001) than models without EDR, which indicates that QT-RR dynamics is better explained by respiratory-information-based models. Moreover, the QT-RR-EDR model fitting values gradually decreased from the NCAN group to ECAN and DCAN groups, which indicate a decoupling of QT from RR and the respiration signal with the increase in severity of CAN. In this study, only the EDR-based model significantly distinguished ECAN and DCAN groups from the NCAN group (p < 0.05) with large effect sizes (Cohen's d > 0.75) showing the effectiveness of this modeling technique in detecting subclinical CAN. In conclusion, the EDR-based trivariate QT-RR-EDR model was found to be better in detecting the presence and severity of CAN than the bivariate QT-RR model. This finding also establishes the importance of adding respiratory information for analyzing the gradual deterioration of normal VR dynamics in pathological conditions, such as diabetic CAN.

Our present research focuses on kinematic and dynamic modeling of a 3-DOF robotic cutting head for the next generation of CNC machines. The robotic cutting head is one kind of parallel manipulator of 3-PUU type, which has a high flexibility of motion in three-dimensional space. The parallel manipulator consists of three linear servomotors, which drive three connecting rods independently according to the cutting strategy. Being a parallel manipulator, the robotic cutting head has higher stiffness and position accuracy; consequently, higher velocities and accelerations can be achieved. A very suitable application of this mechanism is as a cutting head of a precision machine tool for three-dimensional cutting problems.

At first blush, user modeling appears to be a prime candidate for straightforward application of standard machine learning techniques. Observations of the user's behavior can provide training examples that a machine learning system can use to form a model designed to predict future actions. However, user modeling poses a number of challenges for machine learning that have hindered its application in user modeling, including: the need for large data sets; the need for labeled data; concept drift; and computational complexity. This paper examines each of these issues and reviews approaches to resolving them.

Fiber irregularities are inherent to textile fibers, natural fibers in particular. This series of papers examines the impact of fiber irregularity on the mechanical behavior of textile fibers. In the first part, the effect of fiber dimensional irregularities on the tensile behavior of linear elastic fibers is examined, using the finite element method (FEM). Fiber dimensional irregularities are simulated with sine waves of different magnitude and frequency. The results indicate that increasing the level or magnitude of irregularity will decrease the breaking load, breaking elongation and method Young’s modulus of the fiber, while increasing the frequency of irregularity will decrease the breaking load and method Young’s modulus, but the breaking elongation will increase. Fiber dimensional irregularity and the gauge length effect are also simulated in this study.

The paper describes some details of the mechanical and kinematics design of a five-axis mechanism. The design has been utilized to physically realize an industrial-scale five-axis milling machine that can carry a three KW spindle. However, the mechanism could be utilized in other material processing and factory automation applications. The mechanism has five rectilinear joints/axes. Two of these axes are arranged traditionally, i.e. in series, and the other three axes utilize the concept of parallel kinematics. This combination results in a design that allows three translational and two rotational two-mode degrees of freedom (DOFs). The design provides speed, accuracy and cost advantages over traditional five-axis machines. All axes are actuated using linear motors.

The paper introduces a family of three-DOFs translational-rotational Parallel-Kinematics Mechanisms (PKMs) as well as the mobility analysis of such family using Lie-group theory. Each member of this family has two-rotational one-translational DOFs. A novel mechanism is presented and analyzed as a representative of that family. The use and the practical value of that modular mechanism are emphasized.

The aim of the work was to reduce the cost and improve the performance of five-axis machines. The main performance criteria were motion cycle-time and positioning accuracy/precision. A novel machine that utilizes the concept of parallel-kinematics and linear motor technology is proposed, designed, built and controlled for this sake.

In this paper we use the modified and integrated version of the balloon model in the analysis of fMRI data. We propose a new state space model realization for this balloon model and represent it with the standard A,B,C and D matrices widely used in system theory. A second order Padé approximation with equal numerator and denominator degree is used for the time delay approximation in the modeling of the cerebral blood flow. The results obtained through numerical solutions showed that the new state space model realization is in close agreement to the actual modified and integrated version of the balloon model. This new system theoretic formulation is likely to open doors to a novel way of analyzing fMRI data with real time robust estimators. With further development and validation, the new model has the potential to devise a generalized measure to make a significant contribution to improve the diagnosis and treatment of clinical scenarios where the brain functioning get altered. Concepts from system theory can readily be used in the analysis of fMRI data and the subsequent synthesis of filters and estimators.

Spam is commonly known as unsolicited or unwanted email messages in the Internet causing potential threat to Internet Security. Users spend a valuable amount of time deleting spam emails. More importantly, ever increasing spam emails occupy server storage space and consume network bandwidth. Keyword-based spam email filtering strategies will eventually be less successful to model spammer behavior as the spammer constantly changes their tricks to circumvent these filters. The evasive tactics that the spammer uses are patterns and these patterns can be modeled to combat spam. This paper investigates the possibilities of modeling spammer behavioral patterns by well-known classification algorithms such as Naïve Bayesian classifier (Naive Bayes), Decision Tree Induction (DTI) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Preliminary experimental results demonstrate a promising detection rate of around 92%, which is considerably an enhancement of performance compared to similar spammer behavior modeling research.

In this paper a fuzzy linear regression (FLR) model integrated with a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The proposed GA-FLR model is applied to modeling of a stereo vision system. A set of empirical data from stereo vision object measurement is collected based on the full factorial design technique. Three regression models, namely ordinary least-squares regression (OLS), FLR, and GA-FLR, are developed, and with their performances compared. The results show that the proposed GA-FLR model performs better than OLS and FLR in modeling of a stereo vision system.

Fabric pilling is affected by many interacting factors. This study uses artificial neural networks to model the multi-linear relationships between fiber, yarn and fabric properties and their effect on the pilling propensity of pure wool knitted fabrics. This tool shall enable the user to gauge the expected pilling performance of a fabric from a number of given inputs. It will also provide a means of improving current products by offering alternative material specification and/or selection. In addition to having the capability to predict pilling performance, the model will allow for clarification of major fiber, yarn and fabric attributes affecting fabric pilling.

Spam is commonly defined as unsolicited email messages and the goal of spam categorization is to distinguish between spam and legitimate email messages. Many researchers have been trying to separate spam from legitimate emails using machine learning algorithms based on statistical learning methods. In this paper, an innovative and intelligent spam filtering model has been proposed based on support vector machine (SVM). This model combines both linear and nonlinear SVM techniques where linear SVM performs better for text based spam classification that share similar characteristics. The proposed model considers both text and image based email messages for classification by selecting an appropriate kernel function for information transformation.
