We have demonstrated that the surface wettability of negatively charged polyimide films could be turned by electrostatic self-assembly of ionic liquids. The water contact angles of the polyimide films varied in the range 27-80 degrees for 13 different ionic liquids based on imidazolium and ammonium salts. The surface morphology of the resulting surfaces was characterized using atomic force microscopy. The results revealed that the assembly of longer-substituent cations was characterized by the formation of spherical nanoparticles that were formed due to sequent aggregation of cations on those electrostatically assembled ones via hydrophobic interaction. In this case, the counteranions are present in the assembled layers and the wettability is accordingly affected. Whereas for shorter-substituent cations, no aggregates were formed due to the less hydrophobic interaction than the electrostatic repulsive interaction between the cations, and the counteranions were absent from the assembled layers. This method can also be utilized to quantify the hydrophobicity of various ionic liquids.

In this paper, the influence of chemically reduced graphene oxide sheets (CRGOs) on the electrochemical performance through methyl or carboxylic acid terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is reported. The gold electrode was initially modified with methyl or carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiols with various carbon chain lengths (n = 4, 6, 8 and 11) and subsequently immobilization of the CRGOs on a SAM surface was achieved via a hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction. By using the potassium ferricyanide as a redox probe, it was observed that CRGOs could effectively enhance the heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) of the SAM due to a tunneling effect. The assemblies based on thiol end groups with methyl head groups were observed to afford more hydrophobic interaction binding with CRGOs with a higher reduction time than the assemblies developed with thiol end groups and a -COOH group which were shown to bind more electrostatically with CRGOs, a lowering reduction time. The Nyquist plots developed show a gradual decrease of the charge transfer resistance (Rct) of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox couple at the CRGOs-SAMs electrode with the controllable adsorption of different CRGO's onto the SAM. Depending on the chain length and terminal functional group the electron transfer rate kinetics were observed to differ considerably.

Here we report self-assembly of ultrathin gold nanowires and single-walled carbon nanotubes with an ultrahigh aspect ratio as a highly sensitive substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. And we demonstrated that the hybrids were especially efficient in adsorption of aromatic molecules such as 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and the hybrids materials could be used as a novel platform for trace level detection in the verification of paper notes through the Raman enhancement technique.

Three conformationally preorganised host molecules based on the [3]polynorbornyl framework and incorporating di-urea receptors were synthesised and their interaction with a series of anions investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. A high affinity of each host molecule for dihydrogenphosphate (H2PO4–) and dihydrogenpyrophosphate (H2P2O72–) was identified. In addition to binding to the urea receptors of the host molecules, evidence for an interaction involving the non-polar C–H groups within the binding cavity of the framework and guest anions was also discovered. Furthermore, an unusual 2 : 1 host-to-anion stoichiometry was indicated when binding H2P2O72–, and a model for the anion-mediated self-assembly of this complex species is proposed.

We have developed a novel method to grow ordered layers of monodisperse colloids on a flat substrate. The evaporation of the colloidal suspension in the presence of the inclined substrate is strengthened by an external gas flux directed on the meniscus. The meniscus oscillations caused by the gas flux have an evident effect on the ordering of the spheres on the substrate. Thick films (more than 150 layers in a single-step deposition) of large area single crystals (1 cm2) can be obtained in a very short time (~1 cm/h maximum growth rate) and from very diluted suspensions (up to 0.022% volume fraction).

Self-Assembly Monolayer (SAM) technique, as a novel and developing technique for fabricating layer-by-layer nanofilm on substrates of various sizes, shapes and materials, has received more and more attention in the areas of light-emitting devices, nonlinear optical materials, conductive films, permselective gas membranes, sensors, modification of electrodes, resistance and printing technique. In comparison with other traditional methods, SAM technique has many significant advantages, including simple process, universality, formation with densely packed, well defined, highly ordered surfaces. This paper will give a review on the recent development in SAM technique.

The self-assembling behavior of a single-chain quaternary ammonium amphiphile bearing azobenzene (C12AzoC6N+) on freshly cleaved mica sheet has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) method. Confocal microscopic Raman spectra confirm the adsorption of the self-assembled monolayer structure. Ex-situ AFM reveals that C12AzoC6N+ forms branch-like stripes indicating the fusion and reorganization of the micelles during drying in air as the in-situ AFM has revealed that surfactant forms spherical micelles on the mica surface. The nano-sized surface structure is strongly dependent on the change of molecular structure, which resulted from photo-induced isomerization. The nano-sized stripe is quite stable even being annealed at 90 °C for 4 h.

Blends of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP-b-PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self-assembled nanostructures of the P2VP-b-PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes.

We report a novel approach for the assembly of one-dimensional hybrid nanostructures that consist of gold nanowires with ultrahigh aspect ratios (L/d > 500) self-assembled along the axes of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The micrometer-long hybrid nanowires exhibit high electrical conductivity and can be easily microcontact-printed onto various substrates in a patterned form, suggesting that these hybrids have considerable potential as interconnects for nanoelectronic applications.
