In this paper we propose a novel secure tag ownership transfer scheme for closed loop RFID systems. An important property of our method is that the ownership transfer is guaranteed to be atomic and the scheme is protected against desynchronisation leading to permanent DoS. Further, it is suited to the computational constraints of EPC Class-1 Gen-2 passive RFID tags as they only use the CRC and PRNG functions that passive RFID tags are capable of. We provide a detailed security analysis to show that our scheme satisfies the required security properties of tag anonymity, tag location privacy, forward secrecy, forward untraceability while being resistant to replay, desynchronisation and server impersonation attacks. Performance comparisons show that our scheme is practical and can be implemented on passive low-cost RFID tags.

A multi-layer circular planar inverted-F antenna is designed and simulated at the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band of 915 MHz for closed loop deep brain stimulation implant. The ISM band is considered due to the capabilities of small antenna size, high data rate, and long transmission range. In the proposed four-layer antenna, the top three radiating layers are meandered, and a high permittivity substrate and superstrate materials are used to limit the radius and the height of the antenna to 3.5 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively. The bottom layer works as a ground plate. The Roger RO3210 of εr = 10.2 and δ = 0.003 is used as a dielectric substrate and superstrate. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 915 MHz with a bandwidth of 12 MHz at the return loss of -10 dB in free space. The stacked layered structure reduces the antenna size, and the circular shape makes it easily implantable into the human head. The antenna parameters (e.g. 3D gain pattern), SAR value, and electric field distribution within a six layers spherical head model are evaluated by using the finite element method (FEM). The feasibility of the wireless transmission of power, control and command signal to the implant in the human head is also examined. © 2012 IEEE.

Deep brain stimulation is an effective and safe medical treatment for a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and treatment resistant obsessive compulsive disorder. A closed loop deep brain stimulation (CLDBS) system automatically adjusts stimulation parameters by the brain response in real time. The CLDBS continues to evolve due to the advancement in the brain stimulation technologies. This paper provides a study on the existing systems developed for CLDBS. It highlights the issues associated with CLDBS systems including feedback signal recording and processing, stimulation parameters setting, control algorithm, wireless telemetry, size, and power consumption. The benefits and limitations of the existing CLDBS systems are also presented. Whilst robust clinical proof of the benefits of the technology remains to be achieved, it has the potential to offer several advantages over open loop DBS. The CLDBS can improve efficiency and efficacy of therapy, eliminate lengthy start-up period for programming and adjustment, provide a personalized treatment, and make parameters setting automatic and adaptive.

In the RFID system a tag is attached to an object which might own by a number of people during its life cycle. As a result, the RFID system requires to transfer ownership of the tag. The ownership transfer has to protect privacy of current and new owner. There are number of ownership transfer protocol proposed to achieve secure ownership transfer. However, most of them are impractical or insecure to implement on current passive RFID tags. We are presenting an ownership transfer protocol using timer based shared secret for closed loop RFID systems. The protocol will ensure security and privacy of involved parties in the idle circumstances. Our comparison shows that the proposed protocol is more secure and practical than existing similar ones.

The protocol will ensure security and privacy of involved parties in the idle circumstances. Our comparison shows that the proposed protocol is more secure and practical than existing similar ones.

Radical changes in the biosphere and human interaction with the environment are increasingly impacting on the health of populations across the world. Diseases are crossing the species barrier, and spreading rapidly through globalized transport systems. From new patterns of cancer to the threat of global pandemics, it is imperative that public health practitioners acknowledge the interdependence between the sustainability of the environment and the sustainability of the human species.* Why are issues of global and local sustainability of increasing importance to the public's health?* Why do issues of sustainability require new practices within the professions of public health?* How can future and current public health practitioners develop those new practices?Drawing on scientific evidence of global and local environmental changes, Sustainability and Health offers a thorough background and practical solutions to the overlapping issues in environment and health. It examines potential and existing responses to global and local environment and health issues, involving individuals, community, industry and government. The authors introduce a range of emerging conceptual frameworks and theoretical perspectives, link IT and epidemiology and explain how scoping can link program design, delivery, data collection and evaluation in projects from their very beginning. The main objective of a steel strip rolling process is to produce high quality steel at a desired thickness.  Thickness reduction is the result of the speed difference between the incoming and the outgoing steel strip and the application of the large normal forces via the backup and the work rolls.  Gauge control of a cold rolled steel strip is achieved using the gaugemeter principle that works adequately for the input gauge changes and the strip hardness changes.  However, the compensation of some factors is problematic, for example, eccentricity of the backup rolls.  This cyclic eccentricity effect causes a gauge deviation, but more importantly, a signal is passed to the gap position control so to increase the eccentricity deviation.  Consequently, the required high product tolerances are severely limited by the presence of the roll eccentricity effects.
In this paper a direct model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme with dynamically constructed neural controller was used.  The aim here is to find the simplest controller structure capable of achieving an optimal performance.  The stability of the adaptive neural control scheme (i.e. the requirement of persistency of excitation and bounded learning rates) is addressed by using as the inputs to the reference model the plant's state variables.  In such a case, excitation is due to actual plant signals (states) affected by plant disturbances and noise.  In addition, a reference model in the form of a filter with a desired transfer function using Modulus Optimum design was used to ensure variance in the desired dynamic characteristics of the system.  The gradually decreasing learning rate employed by the neural controller in this paper is aimed at eliminating controller instability resulting from over-aggressive control.  The moving target problem (i.e. the difficulty of global neural networks to perfrom several separate computational tasks in closed -loop control) is addressed by the localized architecture of the controller.  The above control scheme and learning algorithm offers a method for automatic discovery of an efficient controller.
The resulting neural controller produces an excellent disturbance rejection in both cases of eccentricity and hardness disturbances, reducing the gauge deviation due to eccentricity disturbance from 33.36% to 4.57% on average, and the gauge deviation due to hardness disturbance from 12.59% to 2.08%.

To determine whether the encoding of misleading information presented in two different types of leading questions (closed specific and open presumptive questions) could be disrupted, participants took part in a misinformation experiment. They viewed an event before answering questions that had a closed specific structure (e.g. “Did the robber have a shotgun that had a black barrel and a brown stock?”) or an open presumptive structure (e.g. “Tell me about the shotgun”). Half the questions contained misleading information and half did not. For some of the questions, participants completed a concurrent distractor task. Finally, they completed a recognition memory test about the original event. Results showed that the concurrent distractor task during the interview reduced the size of the misinformation effect for the closed specific questions, but had no impact on the misinformation effect for the open presumptive questions. The results suggest that open presumptive questions encourage participants to encode and process the misleading information more deeply than the closed specific questions. The misinformation effect was more difficult to disrupt with a concurrent task during the encoding of the misleading information for open presumptive questions than for closed specific questions. The implications for interviewing are discussed.
