In this chapter, advanced characterization of membrane fouling as a diagnostic tool has been summarized to prevent membrane fouling. Physical, chemical and biological analyses as membrane autopsies are mainly utilized to better understand membrane foulant. The physical characterization gives structure, roughness, charge effect, strength and hydrophobicity of membrane fouling. The chemical methods provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of different inorganic and organic matter. The biological properties present the spatial biofilm distribution, structure of dominant microorganisms and isolation and identification of microorganisms. In addition, detailed membrane foulant types are reviewed in terms of structure, roughness, hydrophobicity, charge effect, strength, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, silicate, particle, functional group, biopolymer, humic acid, polysaccharide, structural composition, biofilm structure, microorganism and foulant interaction.

Lab-on-a-chips are microfluidic devices which include biological laboratory functions on a single chip. They offer great advantages in terms of speed of analysis, precision, low sample and reagent consumption and automation of analysis. An efficient detection method in lab-on-a-chips is essential for the detection and quantification of chemical and biological parameters under examination. This review paper focuses on the recent research on optical detection techniques for LOC applications. Furthermore, several emerging detection paradigms which are still being matured are covered in this paper. Also, an analysis of the performance of different optical detection methods is given.

Despite their important role in chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) incident response, little is known about emergency nurses' perceptions of these events. The study aim was to explore emergency nurses' perceptions of CBR incidents and factors that may influence their capacity to respond. Sixty-four nurses from a metropolitan Emergency Department took part. The majority were willing to participate in CBR incidents and there was a positive association between willingness to participate and postgraduate qualification in emergency nursing. Willingness decreased, however, with unknown chemical and biological agents. One third of participants reported limitations to using personal protective equipment. Few participants had experience with CBR incidents although 70.3 per cent of participants had undergone CBR training. There were significant differences in perceptions of choice to participate and adequacy of training between chemical, biological and radiological incidents. The study results suggest that emergency nurses are keen to meet the challenge of CBR incident response.

Many kinds of chemical and biological materials have been used as inducers of settlement of abalone larvae, as well as other species of marine gastropods, with responses being highly variable, even to the same chemical cue. The present study tested chemical inducers, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), δ-aminovaleric acid (5-AVA) and l-glutamic acid (GA) and the effects they have on larval settlement of Haliotis asinina. Additionally, a relatively inexpensive commercial substance, monosodium glutamate (MSG), was trialed. The datum provided shows all chemicals to be active inducers of settlement in this study, in order of effectiveness of 5-AVA, GABA, MSG to GA. Induction as adjudged from larval numbers settled was best at 6 h 62%, with 10−1 mM 5-AVA. At 24 h, induction was the highest at 78% when exposed to 10−2 mM 5-AVA. Larvae that were allowed to settle up to 72 h showed the highest numbers of settled larvae, and declined back to 60% when exposed to 10−2 5-AVA and 10−1 mM GABA respectively. Monosodium glutamate, although third in settlement standings would bypass the other chemicals, with regard to cost versus yield. The assessment of settlement surface, rough or smooth proved to be irrelevant, which had no significant impact on larval settlement.

Our proprietary preparation obtained by extraction of Chlorella pyrenoidosa cells, ONC-107 (Respondin™), was recently found to selectively boost antibody response to the influenza vaccine in a human clinical trial. Respondin™ is a potent stimulator of mouse B cell proliferation and an activator of macrophages. Bioactivity-guided resolution concluded that Respondin™ is composed of a mixture of immunostimulatory principles of different chemical nature. A combination of size exclusion, anion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography revealed that the bulk of the immunostimulatory activity resides in polysaccharide/protein complexes with molecular masses larger than 100 kDa that are composed primarily of galactose, rhamnose and arabinose.

The chemical and physical speciation of arsenic in a small pond that receives wastewater from a gold mine operation in western Victoria, Australia was studied using differential pulse polarography. By using different sample pretreatments, distinction between the physical states (dissolved or particulate As), between the oxidation states (As(III) or As(V)), and between the degrees of lability (labile or strongly bound) was achieved. The results are interpreted in terms of the physicochemical properties with reference to the use of the pond as a settlement dam for gold mining effluent. The speciation of arsenic was found to vary markedly with the physicochemical properties of the water. A model for the behavior of arsenic in the pond is proposed.

Galvanneal steel is considered to be better for automotive applications than its counterpart, galvanized steel, mainly because of its superior coating and surface properties. Galvanneal steel is produced by hot dipping sheet steel in a bath of molten zinc with small, controlled, levels of aluminium, followed by annealing which creates a Fe-Zn intermetallic layer. This intermetallic layer of the coating improves spot weldability and improves subsequent paint appearance. However, if the microstructure of the coating is not properly controlled and forming parameters are not properly selected, wear of the coating could occur during stamping. Frictional sliding of the sheet between the tool surfaces results in considerable amount of coating loss. An Interstitial Free steel with a Galvanneal coating of nominally 60g/m2 was used for the laboratory experiments. Flat Face Friction (FFF) tests were performed with different forming conditions and lubricants to simulate the frictional sliding in stamping. Glow-Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry (DG-OES) was used to measure the change in the coating thickness during sliding. Optical microscopy was considered for imaging the surfaces as well as an optical method to compare the changes in the coating thickness during the forming. The change to the Galvanneal coating thickness was found to be a function of forming parameters.

This study describes the macrophyte assemblages of temporary floodplain wetlands situated on the floodplain of the Murray River, southeast Australia. Wetlands in the study are subject to flooding, the frequency, duration, and magnitude of which are dictated by the current, regulated river-flow regime. Our aim was to examine the influence of the existing flooding regime on macrophyte assemblages and to trial a monitoring program, based on a multiple before-after-control-impact (MBACI) design, to detect the impact of proposed environmental water allocations (EWAs) on the wetlands. Two categories of flooding regime were identified based on the flow magnitudes required for flooding to occur (flooding thresholds). In this scheme, wetlands with relatively low flooding thresholds are classed as ‘impact’ and those with higher thresholds are classed as ‘control.’ The wetlands were surveyed over a two-year period that incorporated at least one wetting-drying cycle at all wetlands. Results showed significant differences between survey times (season and year), but differences between flooding regime categories were significant only for some components of macrophyte assemblages. Differences between survey dates appear to reflect largely short-term responses to the most recent flood events. However, macrophyte differences observed between control and impact wetlands reflected the cumulative effect of flood events over several years. Differences between control and impact wetlands were strongest for post-flooding surveys based on full assemblages (using ANOSIM) and among specific taxa and functional groups (using ANOVA). Power to detect differences between control and impact wetlands was greatest for species richness and total abundance, but taxa with low variability among wetlands, and hence good power, were actually less sensitive to hydrologic change. We conclude that the MBACI design used in this study will be most effective in detecting wetland ecosystem responses to the implementation of EWAs if response variables are carefully chosen based on their sensitivity to hydrologic change.

A newly isolated strain of Kluyveromyces marxianus YS-1 was used for the production of extra cellular inulinase in a medium containing inulin, meat extract, CaCl2 and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Fermentation medium pH 6.5, cultivation temperature 30 °C and 5% (v/v) inoculum of 12 h-old culture were optimal for enzyme production (30.8 IU/ml) with a fermentation time of 72 h at shake flask level. Raw inulin (2%, w/v) extracted from dahlia tubers by processing at 15 kg/cm2 for 10 min was optimum for bioreactor studies. Maximum enzyme production (55.4 IU/ml) was obtained at an agitation rate of 200 rpm and aeration of 0.75 vvm in a stirred tank reactor with a fermentation time of 60 h.

Atomic depth profiling using secondary ion mass spectrometry, SIMS, is common in the field micro-electronics; however, the generation of molecular information as a function of sample depth is difficult due to the accumulation of damage both on and beneath the sample surface. The introduction of polyatomic ion beams such as SF5 and C60 have raised the possibility of overcoming this problem as they deposit the majority of their energy in the upper surface of the sample resulting in increased sputter yields but with a complimentary reduction in sub-surface damage accumulation. In this paper we report the depth profile analysis of the bio-polymer polycaprolactone, PCL, using the polyatomic ions Au3+ and C60+ and the monoatomic Au+. Results are compared to recent analysis of a similar sample using . depth profiling of cellulose is also demonstrated, an experiment that has been reported as unsuccessful when attempted with implications for biological analysis are discussed.

Refractive indices have been measured throughout the nematic phase of 4-n-pentyl-4'cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and the smectic A and nematic phases of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB). The Vuks and Neugebauer methods of calculating the order parameter are compared. Without knowledge of the molecular polarisabilities it is only possible to calculate a quantity proportional to the order parameter, and within this limitation it is found that the two methods give identical results. The order parameter is scaled using the extrapolation method suggested by Haller [14]. Using a suitable average of the refractive indices and the density data of Gannon and Faber [9], it is shown that the Lorentz-Lorenz relation is obeyed over a 2 % density range in 5CB.

The nano-bainitic microstructures were compared in a 0.79C-1.5Si-1.98Mn-0.24Mo-1.06Al (wt%) steel after isothermal heat-treatment and a Fe-0.2C-1.5Mn-1.2Si-0.3M0-0.6Al-0.02Nb (wt%) steel after controlled thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure for both steels consisted of bainite. The microstructural characteristics of bainite, such as the morphology of the nano-bainite and thicknesses of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite layers, as a function of steel composition and processing was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the nano-bainitic structure can be formed in the low alloy steel through thermomechanical processing. Atom probe tomography (APT) was employed as a powerful technique to determine local composition distributions in three dimensions with atomic resolution. The important conclusions from the APT research were that the carbon content of bainitic ferrite is higher than expected from paraequilibrium level of carbon in ferrite for both steels and that Fe-C clusters and fine particles are formed in the bainitic ferrite in both steels despite the high level of Si.
