Samurai in the Surf explores the history of Japanese investment in the 1980s, following a money-trail that leads back to a ballooning Japanese economy and a colorful array of investment sources. The book also explores the local community's views of this unprecedented stream of foreign investment and provides a convincing illustration of the links between 1980s Queensland and Pauline Hanson's One Nation movement of the 1990s.

My specific brief for the conference presentation on which this essay is based was to speak from the standpoint of a 'curriculum theorist'. However, I rarely use the terms 'curriculum theory' or 'curriculum theorising' other than in the company of US and Canadian colleagues. I prefer to speak of 'curriculum inquiry' or 'curriculum work' and I think of my work as a university teacher and researcher as being directed towards understanding curriculum. From this standpoint I interpret the theme of this Point and Counterpoint, 'Futures for Australian Curriculum', as a focus for speculation on the possible and desirable ways in which the arts of curriculum inquiry can be developed, tested and renewed. In other words, how can we sustain rigorous, vigorous and generative forms of curriculum work?
I will respond to this question by referring to three artefacts of Australian curriculum studies, the first two of which come from the Australian
Curriculum Studies Association's (ACSA) own material history; the third is (arguably) the major synoptic text of North American 'curriculum theory' published during the past decade. I will use these artefacts to illustrate three key issues concerning futures in curriculum inquiry, namely:
• the significance of metaphor;
• questions about genre and a renewed role for
the arts in our work;
• the idea of 'complicated conversation'.

The chemical and physical speciation of arsenic in a small pond that receives wastewater from a gold mine operation in western Victoria, Australia was studied using differential pulse polarography. By using different sample pretreatments, distinction between the physical states (dissolved or particulate As), between the oxidation states (As(III) or As(V)), and between the degrees of lability (labile or strongly bound) was achieved. The results are interpreted in terms of the physicochemical properties with reference to the use of the pond as a settlement dam for gold mining effluent. The speciation of arsenic was found to vary markedly with the physicochemical properties of the water. A model for the behavior of arsenic in the pond is proposed.

The velocity at which a golf club impacts with a golf ball is known as club head speed. Although club head speed has been used to measure performance changes in a number of golf studies, it has not been validated as a golf performance measure. As handicap is the usual measure of performance, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between club head speed and handicap, and to determine whether club head speed at impact is a valid measure of golfing performance. Forty-five male golfers aged 18–80 years, all with registered golfing handicaps (2–27), participated in this study. Each golfer performed 10 golf swings captured by a high-speed camera. Golfers' club head speeds were determined using Video Expert 2, a biomechanical computer program. Golfers with a lower handicap (ie, a better skill level) had faster club head speeds than higher handicap golfers. Linear regression analysis found club head speed to be highly correlated with handicap (r= 0.950). This relationship was described by the equation: In (club head speed)= 4.065 − 0.0214 x handicap. In conclusion, this study has shown that club head speed is a valid indicator of performance in golfers and may therefore be a useful performance measure in future laboratory-based studies.

Contemporaneous transmission effects across volatilities of the Hong Kong Stock and Index futures markets and futures volume of trade are tested by employing a structural systems approach. Competing measures of volatility spillover, constructed from the overnight U.S. S&P500 index futures, are tested and found to impact on the Hong Kong asset return volatility and volume of trade patterns. The examples utilize intra-day 15-min sampled data from this medium-sized Asia Pacific equity and derivative exchange. Both the intra- and inter-day patterns in the Hong Kong market are allowed for in the estimation process.

This paper addresses the creation of materials and resources for use in online learning, focusing on the new and emerging roles for teachers and learners in conjunction with developments in our understanding of the human-computer interface. As more educational providers adopt network-based technologies as delivery portals, the demand for skills in the creation of effective online resources is becoming critical. If we are to provide the learner with online resources that will enhance knowledge construction and the teacher with clear measures that these activities are effective, then we as resource developers must resurrect the role of what might be termed the online alchemist. Our first task is to ensure that new digital resources are not simply transferred from their original format but repurposed to ensure learner(s) accessing those resources are able to interact with both the content and their collaborative partners with new levels of flexibility and manipulation. We must transcend the too frequent use of technology as a means to replicate existing resources and conceptualise environments that engender new paradigms for teaching and learning. Our challenge remains to ensure the gold we have in effective teaching strategies and learning resources is not tarnished through ineffective applications within the online learning context. One strategy to achieve this is through proactive evaluation, a framework that integrates a set of factors and influences to better inform the development of online learning resources.

The development of the Internet has boosted prosperity of the World Wide Web, which is now a huge information source. Because of characteristics of the web, in most cases, traditional databasebased technologies are no longer suitable for web information retrieval and management. To effectively manage web information, it is necessary to reveal intrinsic relationships/structures among web information objects by eliminating noise factors. This paper proposes a mechanism that could be widely used in information processing, including web information processing and noise factor elimination for getting more intrinsic relationships. As an application case of this mechanism, one relevant web page finding algorithm is proposed to uncover intrinsic relationship among web pages from their hyperlink patterns, and find more semantic relevant web pages. The experimental evaluation shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm and demonstrates the potential of the proposed mechanism in web applications.

In education, there is much rhetoric about a school's capacity to prepare learners for 'the future'. For example, there have been 'Schools of the future', 'Lighthouse schools of the future' and many claims from schools around the world that their roles encompass 'educating students for the future' and developing 'citizens of the future'. However, as 'futures educators', the questions must be asked: 'whose future?' and 'what future?'. Considering texts which promote this educational premise require tools and philosophical understandings, in order to deconstruct and articulate the future for which we prepare our young. This paper describes the way in which foresight literacy can be developed through engagement with explicit futures education tools and concepts. It highlights a number of futures texts indiscriminately presented within culture and society, and exposes some of the ways in which foresight (futures) understandings can be achieved. This reading, writing and articulation of a multiplicity of futures is referred to as foresight literacy. This paper does not address the 'future of literacy', but rather the way in which futures education equips students to engage with texts assuming, and describing a future.

In New Times (Hall, 1996), there has been much rhetoric about school’s role in equipping students for the future. Futures education, or futures pedagogy, provides an interdisciplinary approach in which alternative futures may be explored, designed and articulated. Enactivism, as a theory of learning, affirms my contention that it is not enough to talk about the future. Rather, I propose that education must act as an agent of change, in equipping teachers and students alike, to imagine, critique and create possible, preferable and probable futures. This paper, then, explores the co-emergence (Manturana & Varela, 1992) of an explicit futures dimension, and teaching and learning drawing upon case studies of practice in schools.

In the post-modern world, it has been said that there is now greater uncertainty in life than in any previous period, simply because so much has changed as a result of the speed of technological change.

From the educational view point, Futures education is a necessity as times continue to change, in regards to both the sustainability of the person and that of the environment. It is true that uncertainty will always remain an aspect of thinking about the future, however in order to make what is ahead more accessible to everyone, educators have a duty of care to their students to facilitate or educate in regards to tools, concepts and understandings which will help students to become world shapers, and shapers of their own personal futures. This must occur as part of ongoing educator training.

This paper investigates time-varying optimal hedge ratios in individual stock futures markets in India. The analysis employs data on individual stock futures from an unexplored but highly traded (both in terms of volume and quantity) emerging market. The hedge ratios derived in this study incorporate mean reversion in volatility, which is an important extension of the bivariate BEKK-GARCH model of Engle and Kroner. This extension generates improved optimal hedge ratios over the traditional BEKK-GARCH model and static error correction type alternatives.
