Although the flesh-footed shearwater Puffinus carneipes is a species with large population sizes (tens of thousands of breeding pairs) and widespread sub-tropical distribution across Australasian water masses, it is among the species most threatened by longline fisheries mortality in this region. While bycatch mitigation measures have been very successful in reducing mortality in some species, bycatch of flesh-footed shearwaters is still high, with captures estimated to exceed the sustainable take of 514 birds yr-1 by nearly 200 birds for New Zealand fisheries alone. Management agencies aiming to reduce the impact of fisheries mortality on the populations need to understand which marine areas are being used by flesh-footed shearwaters to better target fishery monitoring and mitigation efforts. Foraging studies of seabirds tell us about their use of resources, i.e. the way species segregate the available habitat and help to identify threats that may affect population viability. Breeding shearwaters were tracked from 2 New Zealand colonies using GPS loggers. Individuals foraged over shelf and deep oceanic waters up to 1200 km from their nesting sites during incubation but were mainly within 370 km during early chick rearing. The intensity of potential interactions increased for trawl and surface longline fishing between the January and February study periods but remained at a similar level for bottom longline fishing. Following the field data collection, changes to fishery monitoring were implemented in the areas where shearwaters foraged.

While numerous concerns have been voiced over the past decade regarding the inappropriate question styles of investigative and evidential interviewers, there has been relatively little research, discussion, and critique in relation to the content, structure, and efficacy of existing interviewer training courses. This article provides a brief up-to-date summary of the essential elements of an investigative or evidential interview, followed by a review of research relating to the effectiveness of training programs for forensic interviewers and the factors that are needed to promote the use of appropriate questioning techniques. Finally, this article offers recommendations for future research and for the revision of existing training programs in forensic interviewing.

A modified sand–liquid culture method facilitated easy visualisation of the primary life cycle stages of Plasmodiophora brassicae within clean root hairs of the Arabidopsis host. Pathogen penetration occurred from day 4 onwards and then primary plasmodia developed within the host root. Several Arabidopsis ecotypes tested in varying growth conditions showed differences in disease expression. Defined growth cabinet conditions were found most suitable for studying disease progression in the ecotypes and for achieving uniform infection and disease development. Arabidopsis ecotypes Ta-0 and Tsu-0 known to be partially resistant to a German single-spore isolate of P. brassicae were susceptible to an Australian (Victorian) field population of P. brassicae. The European clubroot differential test was used to confirm virulence and describe the pathotype of the Victorian field population. Knowledge of the interaction of an Australian population of P. brassicae with its host will provide valuable information on a disease which is very difficult to control.

The study of interactions between organic biomolecules and semiconducting surfaces is an important consideration for the design and fabrication of field-effect-transistor (FET) biosensor. This paper demonstrates DNA detection by employing a double-gate field effect transistor (DGFET). In addition, an investigation of sensitivity and signal to noise ratio (SNR) is carried out for different values of analyte concentration, buffer ion concentration, pH, reaction constant, etc. Sensitivity, which is indicated by the change of drain current, increases non-linearly after a specific value (∼1nM) of analyte concentration and decreases non-linearly with buffer ion concentration. However, sensitivity is linearly related to the fluidic gate voltage. The drain current has a significant effect on the positive surface group (-NH2) compared to the negative counterpart (-OH). Furthermore, the sensor has the same response at a particular value of pH (5.76) irrespective of the density of surface group, although it decreases with pH value. The signal to noise ratio is improved with higher analyte concentrations and receptor densities.

A polyelectrolyte/polymeric semiconductor core/shell structure is developed for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)/polyaniline core/shell nanofibers via electrospinning and solution-phase selective polymerization. The polyelectrolyte does not work as a gate dielectric, but can provide an internal modulation from the nanointerface of the 1D core/shell nanostructure. The transistor devices display very high mobilities.

Au-doped polyacrylonitrile–polyaniline core–shell nanofibers are fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent gas-phase polymerization, providing a very high field-effect mobility of up to 11.6 cm2 V−1 s−1. This method is also suitable for other conducting polymers and may eventually lead to a new and simplified fabrication of high-performance polymer organic field-effect transistors.

Purpose : The choice and timing of microorganisms added to soils for bioremediation is affected by the dominant bioavailable contaminants in the soil. However, changes to the concentration of bioavailable PAHs in soil are not clear, especially when several PAHs coexist. This study investigated the effects of PAH concentration and chemical properties on desorption in meadow brown soil after a 1-year aging period, which could reflect changes of PAH bioavailability during bioremediation. Materials and methods : Based on the percentage of different molecular weights in a field investigation, high-level contaminated soil (HCS) and low-level contaminated soil (LCS) were prepared by adding phenanthrene (PHE), pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to uncontaminated meadow brown soil. The concentrations of HCS and LCS were 250 mg kg−1 (PHE, PYR, and BaP: 100, 100, and 50 mg kg−1) and 50 mg kg−1 (PHE, PYR, and BaP: 20, 20, and 10 mg kg−1) respectively. The soils were aged for 1 year, after which desorption was induced by means of a XAD-2 adsorption technique over a 96-h period. Results and discussion : The range of the rapidly desorbing fraction (F rap) for PHE, PYR, and BaP in HCS and LCS was from 1.9 to 27.8 %. In HCS, desorption of PYR was most difficult, and the rate constant of very slow desorption (K vs) of PYR was 8 orders of magnitude lower than that of BaP, which had similar very slow desorbing fractions (49.8 and 50.5 %, respectively). However, in LCS, desorption of PYR was the easiest; the Kvs of PYR was 8–10 orders of magnitude higher than those of PHE and BaP. In HCS, the time scale for release of 50 % of the PAHs was ranked as BaP > PYR > PHE, while in LCS this was BaP > PHE > PYR. Conclusions : The combined effect of PAH concentrations and properties should be taken into account during desorption. The desorption of PAH did not always decrease with increasing molecular weight, and the desorption of four-ring PAHs might be special. These results are useful for screening biodegrading microbes and determining when they should be added to soils based on the dominant contaminants present during different periods, thus improving the efficiency of soil bioremediation.

Purpose: To compare tear film osmolarity measurements between in situ and vapor pressure osmometers. Repeatability of in situ measurements and the effect of sample collection techniques on tear film osmolarity were also evaluated.

Methods: Osmolarity was measured in one randomly determined eye of 52 healthy participants using the in situ (TearLab Corporation, San Diego, CA) and the vapor pressure (Vapro 5520; Wescor, Inc., Logan, UT) osmometers. In a subset of 20 participants, tear osmolarity was measured twice on-eye with the in situ osmometer and was additionally determined on a sample of nonstimulated collected tears (3 µL) with both instruments.

Results: Mean (SD) tear film osmolarity with the in situ osmometer was 299.2 (10.3) mOsmol/L compared with 298.4 (10) mmol/kg with the vapor pressure osmometer, which correlated moderately (r = 0.5, P < 0.05). Limits of agreement between the two instruments were -19.7 to +20.5 mOsmol/L. Using collected tears, measurements with the vapor pressure osmometer were marginally higher (mean [SD], 303.0 [11.0] vs 299.3 [8.0] mOsmol/L; P > 0.05) but correlated well with those using the in situ osmometer (r = 0.9, P < 0.05). The mean (SD) osmolarity of on-eye tears was 5.0 (6.6) mOsmol/L higher than that of collected tears, when both measurements were conducted with the in situ osmometer. This was a consistent effect because the measurements correlated well (r = 0.65, P < 0.05).The in situ osmometer showed good repeatability with a coefficient of repeatability of 9.4 mOsmol/L (r = 0.8, P < 0.05).

Conclusions: Correlation between the two instruments was better when compared on collected tear samples. Tear film osmolarity measurement is influenced by the sample collection technique with the osmolarity of on-eye tears being higher than that of collected tears. This highlights the importance of measuring tear film osmolarity directly on-eye. The in situ osmometer has good repeatability for conducting this measurement.

Control of cervical cancer in developing countries has been hampered by a failure to achieve high screening uptake. HPV DNA self-collection could increase screening coverage, but implementation of this technology is difficult in countries of middle and low income. We investigated whether offering HPV DNA self-collection during routine home visits by community health workers could increase cervical screening.

In Australia, tephritids are usually attracted to either cuelure or methyl eugenol. Methyl eugenol is a very effective lure, but cuelure is less effective likely due to low volatility. A new formate analogue of cuelure, melolure, has increased volatility, resulting in improved efficacy with the melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett. We tested the efficacy of melolure with fruit fly species in Sydney as part of the National Exotic Fruit Fly Monitoring programme. This monitoring programme has 71 trap sites across Sydney, with each trap site comprising separate Lynfield traps containing either cuelure, methyl eugenol, or capilure lure. In 2008, an additional Lynfield trap with melolure plugs was added to seven sites. In 2009 and 2010, an additional Lynfield trap with melolure wicks was added to 11 trap sites and traps were monitored fortnightly for 2 yr. Capture rates for melolure traps were similar to cuelure traps for Dacus absonifacies (May) and Dacus aequalis (Coquillet), but melolure traps consistently caught fewer Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) than cuelure traps. However, trap sites with both a cuelure and melolure traps had increased capture rates for D. absonifacies and D. aequalis, and a marginally significant increase for B. tryoni. Melolure plugs were less effective than melolure wicks, but this effect may be related to lure concentration. The broader Bactrocera group species were attracted more to cuelure than melolure while the Dacus group species were attracted more to melolure than cuelure. There is no benefit in switching from cuelure to melolure to monitor B. tryoni, the most important fruit fly pest in Australia.

Prostate cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers which leads to a considerable number of deaths due to the lack of early and sensitive detection. This paper presents an aptamer functionalized field effect (FET) based biosensor for the detection of prostate cancer. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is considered as the biomarker for prostate cancer whose detection is confirmed by attaching aptamers onto the sensor surface. Through the modelling and numerical simulation, the paper aims to evaluate and predict the performance parameters such as sensitivity, settling time, and limit of detection (LOD) of a label-free FET based electronic biosensor. Various sensor parameters such as structure (i.e., geometry), type of the FET (e.g., nanowire FET, spherical FET, ion-selective FET, and magnetic particle) radius of the FET channel and incubation time are optimized and analyzed. In addition, concentration of analyte biomolecules, diffusion coefficients and affinity to the receptor molecules are also investigated to determine the optimize performance parameters.
