High purity Al single crystals of the (011)[011] orientation have been deformed in plane strain compression in a channel die. Deformation was carried out at a strain rate of 0.01 s−1 to true strains of 0.5 and 1.0, and at temperatures of 25, 200 and 300 °C. The as-deformed microstructure has been characterized using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). No recrystallization was detected after deformation, and the deformation texture analysis showed that the stability of the orientation decreased with increasing temperature, contrary to reports for other orientations.

Annealing was carried out for various times at 300 °C. Nucleation of recrystallization exhibited periodicity, with distinct bands of recrystallized grains forming parallel to the transverse direction. This recrystallized microstructure has been examined using EBSD. A model is proposed to account for the origin of the periodicity of nucleation and the retention of rods or cylinders of unrecrystallized material after significant annealing times.

The Victorian towns of Sorrento and Queenscliff are located either side of Port Phillip Heads. Using these towns as case studies, this paper examines what happens to historic coastal townships caught up in the phenomenon of sea change. Both towns are currently facing huge planning battles and are trying to argue a case for heritage in the rush for expansion and modernisation. Newcomers like to emulate the metropolis in the seaside towns. Planners in the metropolis are asked to make decisions by developers who are thwarted by local municipalities. These towns encapsulate something of the dilemma that comes with a demographic shift from the metropolitan centre to coastal townships and demonstrate that the transition from urban life and built environment does not translate without cost to a fragile coastal environment. It is place itself that has attracted humans to Sorrento and Queenscliff over centuries. The seascape, the landscape, the environment drew the indigenous peoples here centuries ago. It provided abundant food and was inspiring. Europeans came at the very beginning of the 19th century seeking new lands. By the late decades of the 19th century Europeans discovered the seaside and its health giving qualities and built substantial Victorian edifices to house the influx of visitors and holiday-makers who arrived by ferry. However, not until the second half of the twentieth century did development begin to intrude significantly on the landscape. And by the twenty-first century evidence is mounting that development is destroying the sense and character of place, which initially enticed people to come here.

Supplemental Instruction (SI), or Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) as it is commonly known in Australia, involves experienced senior student Peer Leaders who provide regularly scheduled peer learning sessions with students enrolled in university courses. Commonly implemented on first year subjects, the sessions integrate “how to learn” with “what to learn”, helping students achieve better grades and helping raise student retention rates. This paper discusses the challenges of supporting SI Leaders who are geographically dispersed across multiple campuses and considers the theoretical and empirical literature that informs the development of an online mentoring model.

High purity Al single crystals of the Cube (0 0 1)[1 0 0] and rotated Cube (0 1 1)[0 1 ¯ 1] orientations have been deformed in plane strain compression in a channel die. Deformation was carried out at temperatures between 25 and 600 8C up to strains of 1.2. The as-deformed microstructure has been characterised using electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD).
Annealing was carried out for various times and temperatures. The recrystallized microstructure has been studied using electron microscopy, and the orientation of recrystallized grains determined using EBSD. After cold deformation and annealing both orientations exhibited a random recrystallization texture component. After hot deformation both orientations retained a similar annealing texture to their starting deformation texture. The annealing texture of deformed single crystals was found to be more sensitive to the temperature of deformation than the stability of the orientation.

Using a completely amorphous polyether we have investigated the effect of the inclusion of a nano-particulate filler on a polymer electrolyte. Nano-sized TiO2 is shown not to significantly affect the conductivity of composite electrolytes containing 1.0 or 1.25 mol/kg LiClO4 or 1.5 or 2.0 mol/kg LiTFSI. At 1.5 mol/kg LiClO4 a significant increase in conductivity is observed. Raman spectroscopy experiments have been used to investigate the effect of filler on ion-aggregation. Only one new vibrational mode can be assigned to the composite which is not due to the polymer electrolyte or the filler. From this work, we believe the increased conductivity observed by previous researchers as a result of filler addition may be largely attributed to the effect on the degree of crystallinity along with some disruption of ion-aggregation by the fillers in PEO based electrolytes.

We report spectroscopic results from investigations of a novel solid polymeric fast-ion-conductor based on poly(acrylonitrile), (PAN, of repeat unit [CH2CH(CN)]n), and the salt LiCF3SO3 . From NMR studies of the temperature and concentration dependencies of 7Li- and lH-NMR linewidths, we conclude that significant ionic motion occurs at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature of these polymer-in-salt electrolytes, in accordance with a recent report on the ionic conductivity. In the dilute salt-in-polymer regime, however, ionic motion appears mainly to be confined to local salt-rich domains, as determined from the dramatic composition dependence of the ionic conductivity. FT-Raman spectroscopy is used to directly probe the local chemical anionic environment, as well as the Li+–PAN interaction. The characteristic δs(CF3) mode of the CF3SO3 anion at ~750–780 cm−l shows that the ionic substructure is highly complex. Notably, no spectroscopic evidence of free anions is found even at relatively salt-depleted compositions (e.g. N:Li~60–10:1). A strong Li+–PAN interaction is manifested as a pronounced shift of the characteristic polymer C=N stretching mode, found at ~2244 cm−l in pure PAN, to ~2275 cm−l for Li+-coordinated C=N moieties. Our proton-NMR data suggest that upon complexation of PAN with LiCF3 SO3, the glass transition occurs at progressively lower temperatures.

Collapse was a visual performance installation presented at the Old Port of Melbourne in 2008. The audience travelled by boat across Port Phillip Bay to witness the performance begins at Sciencework’s Spotswood Jetty, where the audience travelled by ferry across the Port Phillip Bay to a remote location, where society has “collapsed”. The performance then becomes a walking tour around this new location, encountering and experiencing the world that Red Cabbage has created.

Floundering halfway between the abyss and the peak…exist those that have not yet fallen…in a state of recurring collapse. The girl in the yellow dress, the man in the grey suit, the old man in the brown pants, the woman in the blue shirt and the man in the red hat are suspected carriers of the white sickness. They have been removed from their homes to the edge of the city for standard assessment. Here they meet the others, processed…waiting…isolated. By boat…they travel across the bay to their final destination. Not another Hollywood style apocalyptic melodrama in which our heroes find grace, hope and redemption in the utter destruction of modern civilization…in the collapse of lived time the ruins of humanity are exposed as already existent…the limits of our ability to be graceful were discovered long ago…the trauma of the end of time a given…the plague is now.

The effect of varying the percent crystallinity on the electrochemical behavior of Mg65Cu25Y10 and Mg70Zn25Ca5 bulk metallic glasses was studied. The alloys were heat-treated to achieve desired microstructures ranging from fully amorphous to fully crystalline, providing a systematic basis for subsequent testing. Potentiodynamic experiments in 0.01 M sodium chloride (NaCl) were used, whereby both the amorphous and partially crystallized samples were observed to have more noble corrosion potentials and lower anodic kinetics. However, this was accompanied by more rapid cathodic kinetics relative to their fully crystalline counterparts, meaning that corrosion rates were not significantly lower in the amorphous state. To describe the electrochemical response as a function of the degree of crystallinity, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical conductivity measurements were undertaken, where it was found that crystallinity alone is not necessarily the controlling factor and microchemistry that evolves upon devitrification, plays a key role in the electrochemical response of these materials.

In 1997, the New Labour government inherited a ‘crisis’ in the UK National Health Service from the outgoing Conservative government. To address this perceived crisis, New Labour offered investment and, contrary to expectations, further neo-liberal health service reforms. In particular, the government extended the scope of performance management beyond financial numbers to encompass all aspects of managerial and organisational performance. Drawing on an analytics of government framework, this paper demonstrates how reforms were framed and given meaning through a framework of hierarchical accountability and centralised control. These panoptical arrangements relied on performance-management technologies of targets and ratings, which were linked to patient choice and a prospective funding system called ‘Payment by Results’. In turn, these top-down technologies disciplined knowledge, identity, and visibility and control of practice.
