Fusion: repo to expo

Deakin University has set up a new exhibition system, Fusion, to showcase the University's special collections and research outputs. Data in Fusion will also be used by researchers in the digital humanities, and will provide a means of involving the wider, local, community in research efforts and collaborative projects. Fusion uses the Omeka software, which supports highly-visual, media-rich presentations. It is linked to the University's research repository, which remains the primary store for the data.Deakin’s special collections include unique material related to Alfred Deakin and the Federation of Australia, as well as the cultural and social milieu of the period 1859 to 1920. The Library has begun a digitisation project to ensure the long-term preservation of the rarer, older and most fragile items from the collection. Cultural diplomacy, cosmopolitanism and global hierarchy at the Shanghai Expo

In 2010, the city of Shanghai hosted the largest and most spectacular World's Fair ever. Shanghai Expo attracted a staggering 73 million visitors, around 98% of whom were domestic Chinese, and involved the participation of 190 countries. As a forum of "virtual tourism," the event is significant given the rapid and long-term growth in outbound Chinese tourism. This article pursues a closer reading of how "the world" was performed and exhibited to these visitors. Oriented by two theoretical considerations - the spatial configuration of the expo site and its cosmopolitan imagination - the article considers how the format of the Expo revealed and declared certain elements of the global, while simultaneously effacing and squeezing out others. The Expo is thus interpreted as an important mechanism in the creation of a new national citizenry in China and as part of the ceremonialization of a global polity of a "family of nations."

Recent global trends in the Chinese construction industry and its market

The rapidly increasing construction demand in China, particularly spurred by the coming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai Expo, provides challenging opportunities for overseas construction enterprises. Therefore understanding the structure and dynamics of construction industry in China is crucial, particularly the potential changes of the market after the China's entry into the World Trade Organization. This paper analyses the development of construction economics and institutional regulations in the construction market, and provides a comprehensive image on the Chinese construction sector in the global environment.

Current state of China tourism research

Along with the tremendous growth of tourism development in China after its successful hosting of two international mega-events (i.e. the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games), a modest body of academic research on tourism in China has been developed since the start of the second decade of the new millennium. To supplement the continuous development of China's tourism industry, this study presents a review of 147 research articles from tourism journals during the period 2010-2012. Through content analysis, the empirical findings indicate that tourist behaviour and experience was the most researched theme, followed by culture and heritage studies. The trend of research collaboration, particularly international collaboration, was evident among the analysed studies. This study also presents the diversity in recent research in the realm of tourism in China in terms of research context, geographical coverage, data collection and analysis method, and institutional contribution.

Farmers’ work-day noise exposure

Objective: This study aims to understand the extent offarmers’ exposure to hazardous noise, and trial and testthe ability of an on-farm noise audit report to improve awareness and preventative action towards farm based noise hazards.Design: Visits were made to working farms where noiseand dosimetry measurements undertaken. During return visits, the noise measurements were explained ina brief report. A follow-up questionnaire was imple-mented gathering feedback on the use or otherwise ofthe report.Setting: Working farms in Western Victoria and SEQueensland including dairy, beef, wool, prime lamb andcropping.Participants: Participants were 14 female and 37 male farm workers.Interventions: Noise exposure assessment of dailyactivities through dosimetry; measurements of noisy tasks and machinery; supply and interpretation of anoise audit report.Main outcome measures: Participants were suppliedwith a ‘noise report’ of their workplace together with an explanation of the report’s meaning to farm workers.Results: Men and women have similar at risk expo-sures. The average noise exposure was 1.09 Pa2h(LAeq,8h= 85.3 dB). This implies 163 000 Australian agricultural workers are at risk from hazardous noise.On-farm noise audit reports were a relevant and valuable feedback to farmers in relation to their potential noise hazards.Conclusions: Of those measured 51%, and by extrapo-lation 163 000 Australian agricultural workers, have noise exposure levels greater than the recommendedAustralian Standard of 1.01 Pa2h (85 dB).
