An off-grid photovoltaic power system requires an energy storage system, especially batteries, for mitigation of variability and intermittency problems, and for assured service reliability and availability. The longevity and reliability of such batteries depend on the effectiveness of the charging system. This paper presents the modelling, simulation and hardware implementation of a four-stage switch-mode charger based on the single-ended primary inductance converter. The digital signal processor based controller implements algorithms for the system's power balance control, maximum power point tracking to improve charging speed and efficiency, four-stage optimal charging, and system's protection. The protection algorithm provides over-charge, overdischarge, over-temperature and short circuit protection capabilities. The proposed system has the following advantages: ability to continuously charge the batteries even at reduced solar irradiation, higher efficiency, and use of adaptive thermally compensated set points for optimum performance. A prototype is built and experimental results are presented to validate the simulation results.

This paper investigates the robust tracking control problem for a bipolar electromagnetic-levitation precise-position system. The dynamic model of the precise-position device is derived by conducting a thorough analysis on the nonlinear electromagnetic forces. Conventional sliding-mode control and terminal sliding-mode control strategies are developed to guarantee asymptotic and finite-time tracking capabilities of the closed-loop system. A lumped uncertainty estimator is proposed to estimate the system uncertainties. The estimated information is then used to construct a smooth uniformly ultimately bounded sliding-mode control. An exact estimator is also proposed to exactly estimate the unknown uncertainties in finite time. The output of the exact estimator is used to design a continuous chattering free terminal sliding-mode control. The time taken for the closed-loop system to reach zero tracking error is proven to be finite. Experiment results are presented, using a real time digital-signal-processor (DSP) based electromagnetic-levitation system to validate the analysis.

In this study, simulation and hardware implementation of Fuzzy Logic (FL) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) used in photovoltaic system with a direct control method are presented. In this control system, no proportional or integral control loop exists and an adaptive FL controller generates the control signals. The designed and integrated system is a contribution of different aspects which includes simulation, design and programming and experimental setup. The resultant system is capable and satisfactory in terms of fastness and dynamic performance. The results also indicate that the control system works without steady-state error and has the ability of tracking MPPs rapid and accurate which is useful for the sudden changes in the atmospheric condition. MATLAB/Simulink software is utilized for simulation and also programming the TMS320F2812 Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The whole system designed and implemented to hardware was tested successfully on a laboratory PV array. The obtained experimental results show the functionality and feasibility of the proposed controller.

A series of digital frequency filters (DFFs) were designed to screen diverse noises and the spectrographic analysis was conducted to isolate complex boundary reflection, which obscures the damage-induced signals. The scale-averaged wavelet power (SAP) technique was applied to enhance
the measurement accuracy of Time of Flight (TOF). As an example, the propagation characteristics of elastic wave in a structural beam of square cross-section were analyzed using such an approach and verified experimentally and numerically, with the consideration of the complicated wave scatter caused by the non-ignorable section dimensions.

Australia adopted digital TV (DTV) on January 1, 2001 but due to slow adoption by end users, the deadline to discontinue the analog signal has so far been postponed twice. This paper examines the history and current status of DTV adoption in Australia with reference to theories of adoption and diffusion and the Justification Model of Technology and why end users
appear reluctant to adopt-in spite of affordable converters. End user opinions are examined on ‘why they do not adopt’ and ‘what may encourage them to adopt’, using public submissions to the 2005 parliamentary ‘Inquiry into the uptake of digital TV in Australia’. The paper advocates relevant media literacy programs to address the low public awareness of DTV and its benefits because its rejection may result in less affluent end users losing the chance to receive a range of convergent services in the future via the ubiquitous and affordable television.

This thesis describes the optimisation of the encoding and decoding processes used to transmit and receive frequency coded data tones acoustically during the operation of an underwater diver navigation system. The aim was to reduce the time required to both generate these data tones for transmission as well as to decode these tones during reception. Encoding of the data tones is performed using a phase lock loop under the control of a microcontroller. A technique was developed which combined both hardware and software modifications to effectively halve the phase lock loop settling time, and therefore the time required to generate these tones. Decoding of these data tones is achieved using the Fast Fourier Transform. Alternative forms of the Discrete Fourier Transform were explored to find the most efficient in terms of execution time. Numerous software optimisations were then applied which led to a reduction in program execution time of 54 % with no penalty in program complexity or length. Testing of the system under identical real-life operating conditions showed no evidence of any system performance degradation as a result of these optimisations.

This paper presents a novel patchwork-based embedding and decoding scheme for digital audio watermarking. At the embedding stage, an audio segment is divided into two subsegments and the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of the subsegments are computed. The DCT coefficients related to a specified frequency region are then partitioned into a number of frame pairs. The DCT frame pairs suitable for watermark embedding are chosen by a selection criterion and watermarks are embedded into the selected DCT frame pairs by modifying their coefficients, controlled by a secret key. The modifications are conducted in such a way that the selection criterion used at the embedding stage can be applied at the decoding stage to identify the watermarked DCT frame pairs. At the decoding stage, the secret key is utilized to extract watermarks from the watermarked DCT frame pairs. Compared with existing patchwork watermarking methods, the proposed scheme does not require information of which frame pairs of the watermarked audio signal enclose watermarks and is more robust to conventional attacks.
