High-pressure methods were applied to investigate the structural stability and hydrogen bonding of polar molecules of iodoform by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra measurements, respectively. Up to a pressure of 40 GPa, no phase transitions were observed. The discontinuous frequency shift of the C−H stretching band is believed to be related to the enhancement of the C−H···I weak hydrogen bonds under high pressures. Ab initio calculations were performed, and the results predict the frequency shift of the C−H stretching vibration as C−H···I interacts via hydrogen bonding. The bulk modulus is 17.3 ± 0.8 GPa, with a pressure derivative of 5.2.

In this paper we provide a robust version of a linear Kalman filter for target tracking with nonlinear range and bearing measurements. Moreover, we prove that the state estimation error is bounded in a probabilistic sense. We compare our approach with the current state of the art in converted radar measurement based linear filtering.

Wool fibres consist of micro to nano scale protein constituents that could be used for innovative applications. While techniques for extracting these constituents or making wool fibres into organic powders have been developed, effectively dispersing the particles and accurately determining their size has been difficult in practice. In this study, an ultrasonic method was employed to disperse cortical cells extracted from wool fibres into an
immersion oil or ethanol. Specimens of the cortical cells were then observed under optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Cell length and maximum cell diameter were measured to quantify the cell size. The results suggest significant discrepancies exist in the cortical cell size obtained from the two different measurement techniques. The maximum diameter of wool cortical cells obtained from the optical microscope was much larger than that from the scanning electron microscope, while the length was much shorter. A correction factor is given so that cortical cell size obtained from the two measurement techniques can be compared.

In situ neutron diffraction and Elasto-Plastic Self-Consistent (EPSC) polycrystal modelling have been employed to investigate which deformation mechanisms are involved in the plasticity of extruded AZ31 Mg alloy during the tensile loading along the extrusion direction. On the basis of this study we were able to determine the relative activity of the slip and twinning deformation modes. By tuning the parameters of the EPSC model (i.e. the critical resolved shear strengths and hardening parameters), excellent agreement with the experimental data has been achieved. It is shown that the strain in the crystallographic ⟨c ⟩direction is accommodated mainly by ⟨c + a ⟩ dislocation slip on second-order pyramidal planes. The results further indicate that either slip of ⟨a ⟩dislocations occurs on {10.1} pyramidal planes or cross-slip from basal and prismatic planes takes place.

This research is a preliminary investigation of the objective measurements ofthelmal comfort and C02 levels as well as subjective user evaluation surveys in six meeting rooms. The ongoing objective measurements were taken via thelmal comfort carts while the surveys evaluated parameters of temperature, lighting, air quality, meeting effectiveness etc. The outcomes are of particular interest since some of the objective measurements clearly to not support those of the users. In fact, the investigation has triggered off further interest in refining questionnaires to develop more precise indicators of 'discomfort'.
Furthelmore, meeting rooms present a challenge when it comes to conditioning spaces (HV AC design) which are sporadic in use and often with high occupancy for short periods. This paper investigates meeting rooms in four different buildings and their conditioning control concepts are discussed in relation to measured results.

This paper investigates the problem of localizing a wireless transmitter using a minimum number of receivers and other readily available means in a time difference of arrival (TDOA) setting. Using the necessary and sufficient conditions for unique solution, we use power measurements to compensate for the reduced number of receivers. In other words, if the transmitter is not located in the unique solution area, we provides a technique to find the true location via the measured received signal power. Our approach neither requires the knowledge of the transmission power nor the path loss exponent.

In the present work in situ neutron diffraction and acoustic emission were used concurrently to study deformation twinning in two ZM20 Mg alloys with significantly different grain sizes at room temperature. The combination of these techniques allows differentionation between the twin nucleation and the twin growth mechanisms. It is shown, that yielding and immediate post-yielding plasticity in compression is governed primarily by twin nucleation, whereas the plasticity at higher strains is governed by twin growth. The current results further suggest that yielding by twinning happens in a slightly different manner in the fine-grained as compared to the coarse-grained alloy.

We report on the characterization of grain boundary (GB) segregation in an Fe-28Mn-0.3C (wt.%) twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. After recrystallization of this steel for 24 h at 700 °C, ∼50% general grain boundaries (GBs) and ∼35% Σ3 annealing twin boundaries were observed (others were high-order Σ and low-angle GBs). The segregation of B, C and P and traces of Si and Cu were detected at the general GB by atom probe tomography (APT) and quantified using ladder diagrams. In the case of the Σ3 coherent annealing twin, it was necessary to first locate the position of the boundary by density analysis of the atom probe data, then small amounts of B, Si and P segregation and, surprisingly, depletion of C were detected. The concentration of Mn was constant across the interface for both boundary types. The depletion of C at the annealing twin is explained by a local change in the stacking sequence at the boundary, creating a local hexagonal close-packed structure with low C solubility. This finding raises the question of whether segregation/depletion also occurs at Σ3 deformation twin boundaries in high-Mn TWIP steels. Consequently, a previously published APT dataset of the Fe-22Mn-0.6C alloy system, containing a high density of deformation twins due to 30% tensile deformation at room temperature, was reinvestigated using the same analysis routine as for the annealing twin. Although crystallographically identical to the annealing twin, no evidence of segregation or depletion was found at the deformation twins, owing to the lack of mobility of solutes during twin formation at room temperature.

The relationships were investigated between the prickle discomfort scores, assessed by human response from wearer trial garment assessment, and sleeve trial, Wool ComfortMeter (WCM) and Wool HandleMeter (WHM) assessments of fabrics, and fiber diameter characteristics including mean fiber diameter (MFD). Sleeve trial assessment followed exercise, the use of a control sleeve to reduce participant variance and four sensory traits. WHM provides eight handle parameters calibrated against a panel of experts. Four scenarios were evaluated: sleeve trial assessment with MFD; sleeve trial assessment with MFD and WCM; sleeve trial assessment with MFD, WCM and WHM parameters; and sleeve trial assessment with WCM and WHM parameters. Data were analyzed using correlation and forward stepwise general linear modeling. There was no evidence that the incidence of fibers coarser than 30 µm aided the prediction of prickle discomfort once MFD had been accounted for in the models. There were significant correlations between the WCM measurement and each sleeve trial attribute. There was no significant correlation between WHM parameters and sleeve trial assessments. The sleeve trial attribute of ‘skin feel’ offers potential to improve the predictions made of wearer trial prickle discomfort when used in association of the WCM with or without data on fabric MFD. There was little evidence to support using WHM parameters with or without the WCM in predicting wearer assessed prickle discomfort of fabrics. These results indicate that the rapid evaluation of fabrics using sleeve trial assessment can provide cost effective ranking of consumer preferences.

In-situ neutron diffraction was employed to monitor the evolution of nano-bainitic ferrite during low temperature isothermal heat treatment of austenite. The first 10 peaks (austenite, γ and ferrite, α) were monitored during austenization, homogenization, rapid cooling and isothermal holding at 573 K. Changes in the α-110 and γ-111 peaks were analysed to determine the volume fraction changes and hence the kinetics of the phase transformation. Asymmetry and broadening in the α-200 and γ-200 peaks were quantified to lattice parameter changes due to carbon redistribution as well as the effects of size and dislocation density. Atom Probe Tomography was used to confirm that, despite the presence of 1.5 mass % Si, carbide formation was evident. This carbide formation is the cause of poor ductility, which is lower than expected in such steels.
