A wide band low actuation capacitive coupling electrostatic RF MEMS switching device is presented in this paper. The device includes a pi-shaped matching architecture containing two switches connected by a high impedance short transmission line. The device can act as a switch for any desired frequency whilst requiring only 12volts for actuation. By optimizing the length and the characteristic impedance of the transmission line, the switch can be tailored for desired frequency bands. The switch is calculated and simulated for Ka to V frequency bands demonstrating excellent improvements of RF characteristics.

Four new complexes, [PdX(κ2-2-C6R4PPh2)(PPh2Fc)] [X = Br, R = H (1), R = F (2); X = I, R = H (3), R = F (4)], containing ferrocenyldiphenylphosphine (PPh2Fc) have been prepared and fully characterised. The X-ray structures of complexes trans-1, cis-2 and cis-4, and that of a decomposition product of 4, [Pd(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)(μ-I)(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)PdI(PPh2Fc)] (5), have been determined. These complexes show a distorted square planar geometry about the metal atom, the bite angles of the chelate ligands being about 69°, as expected. The cis/trans ratio of 1–4 in solution is strongly dependent on solvent. The new complexes and the uncoordinated PPh2Fc ligand were electrochemically characterised by cyclic and rotating disk voltammetry, UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry, and bulk electrolysis in dichloromethane and acetonitrile. In both cases, oxidation occurs at both the ferrocene and phosphine centres, but the complexes oxidise at more positive potentials than uncoordinated PPh2Fc; subsequently, the metal–phosphorus bond is cleaved, leading to free PPh2Fc+, which undergoes further chemical and electrochemical reactions.

Background: Docetaxel (Taxotere) improve survival and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response rates in patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). We studied the combination of PI-88, an inhibitor of angiogenesis and heparanase activity, and docetaxel in chemotherapy-naive CRPC.

Patients and methods: We conducted a multicentre open-label phase I/II trial of PI-88 in combination with docetaxel. The primary end point was PSA response. Secondary end points included toxicity, radiologic response and overall survival. Doses of PI-88 were escalated to the maximum tolerated dose; whereas docetaxel was given at a fixed 75 mg/m2 dose every three weeks

Results: Twenty-one patients were enrolled in the dose-escalation component. A further 35 patients were randomly allocated to the study to evaluate the two schedules in phase II trial. The trial was stopped early by the Safety Data Review Board due to a higher-than-expected febrile neutropenia of 27%. In the pooled population, the PSA response (50% reduction) was 70%, median survival was 61 weeks (6–99 weeks) and 1-year survival was 71%.

Conclusions: The regimen of docetaxel and PI-88 is active in CRPC but associated with significant haematologic toxicity. Further evaluation of different scheduling and dosing of PI-88 and docetaxel may be warranted to optimise efficacy with a more manageable safety profile.

Bi-functional oxygen electrodes are an enabling component for rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells, both of which are regarded as the next-generation energy devices with zero emission. Nonetheless, at the present, no single metal oxide component can catalyze both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with high performance which leads to large overpotential between ORR and OER. This work strives to address this limitation by studying the bi-functional electrocatalytic activity of the composite of a good ORR catalyst compound (e.g. palladium oxide, PdO) and a good OER catalyst compound (e.g. ruthenium oxide, RuO2) in alkaline solution (0.1M KOH) utilizing a thin-film rotating disk electrode technique. The studied compositions include PdO, RuO2, PdO/RuO2 (25wt.%/75wt.%), PdO/RuO2 (50wt.%/50wt.%) and PdO/RuO2 (75wt.%/25wt.%). The lowest overpotential (e.g. E (2 mA cm−2) - E (-2 mA cm−2)) of 0.82 V is obtained for PdO/RuO2 (25wt.%/75wt.%) (versus Ag|AgCl (3M NaCl) reference electrode).

This paper presents a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based fast speed response controller for poly-phase induction motor drive. Here the proportional and integral gains of PI controller are optimized by GA to achieve quick speed response. An adaptive Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with Real Time Recurrent Learning (RTRL) algorithm is proposed to estimate rotor flux. An online tuning scheme to update the weight of RNN is presented to overcome stator resistance variation problem. This tuning scheme requires torque estimator to calculate the torque error. Space vector modulation (SVM) technique is used to produce the motor input voltage. Simulation tests have been performed to study the dynamic performances of the drive system for both the classical PI and the genetic algorithm based PI controllers.

Successful amination of 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimides with 'lengthy' imide N-functionality has been achieved using a general palladium mediated approach (conventional thermal protocols were sub-optimal). Only readily available Pd/ligand combinations were considered and the resulting Buchwald-Hartwig procedure using Pd2(dba)3, Xantphos and Cs 2CO3 is high yielding, relatively mild (40-80 °C, 24 h, yields 50-90%), requires only a modest excess of amine (3.0 equiv) and works equally well with other imide N-substituents. As such, the protocol complements existing methods but is superior for more complex substrates. Herein we compare this Pd mediated approach to the methods most commonly used and further demonstrate its utility by synthesising a number of new, highly fluorescent, 4-aminonaphthalimides. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In contrast to point forecast, prediction interval-based neural network offers itself as an effective tool to quantify the uncertainty and disturbances that associated with process data. However, single best neural network (NN) does not always guarantee to predict better quality of forecast for different data sets or a whole range of data set. Literature reported that ensemble of NNs using forecast combination produces stable and consistence forecast than single best NN. In this work, a NNs ensemble procedure is introduced to construct better quality of Pis. Weighted averaging forecasts combination mechanism is employed to combine the Pi-based forecast. As the key contribution of this paper, a new Pi-based cost function is proposed to optimize the individual weights for NN in combination process. An optimization algorithm, named simulated annealing (SA) is used to minimize the PI-based cost function. Finally, the proposed method is examined in two different case studies and compared the results with the individual best NNs and available simple averaging Pis aggregating method. Simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method improved the quality of Pis than individual best NNs and simple averaging ensemble method.
