The alkylation reaction of 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole 1b with 2-chloroacetonitrile and 2-chloropropionitrile produced S-alkyl methimazole chlorides 2a and 2b which were subjected to anion metathesis with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, LiNTf2, to afford nitrile functionalized methimazole-based room temperature ionic liquids 3a and 3b in 94% and 89% yields, respectively. Ionic liquids 3a and 3b have reasonably wide electrochemical windows. The efficient extraction of Ag+ from aqueous media into 3a and 3b is also reported.

Heterogeneous catalysts are promising candidates for use in organic reactions due to their advantages in separation, recovery, and environment compatibility. In this work, an active porous catalyst denoted as Pd embedded in porous carbon (Pd@CMK-3) has been prepared by a strategy involving immersion, ammoniahydrolysis, and heating procedures. Detailed characterization of the catalyst revealed that Pd(0) and Pd(II) species co-exist and were embedded in the matrix of the porous carbon (CMK-3). The as-prepared catalyst has shown high activity toward Suzuki reactions. Importantly, if the reaction mixture was homogenized by two minutes of ultrasonication rather than magnetic stirring before heating, the resistance to mass transfer in the pore channels was significantly reduced. As a result, the reactions proceeded more rapidly and a four-fold increase in the turnover frequency (TOF) could be obtained. When the ultrasonication was employed throughout the entire reaction process, the conversion could also exceed 90% even without the protection of inert gas, and although the reaction temperature was lowered to 30 °C. This work provides a method for fabricating highly active porous carbon encapsulated Pd catalysts for Suzuki reactions and proves that the problem of mass transfer in porous catalysts can be conveniently resolved by ultrasonication without any chemical modification being necessary.[Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2014 Tsinghua University Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Successful amination of 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimides with 'lengthy' imide N-functionality has been achieved using a general palladium mediated approach (conventional thermal protocols were sub-optimal). Only readily available Pd/ligand combinations were considered and the resulting Buchwald-Hartwig procedure using Pd2(dba)3, Xantphos and Cs 2CO3 is high yielding, relatively mild (40-80 °C, 24 h, yields 50-90%), requires only a modest excess of amine (3.0 equiv) and works equally well with other imide N-substituents. As such, the protocol complements existing methods but is superior for more complex substrates. Herein we compare this Pd mediated approach to the methods most commonly used and further demonstrate its utility by synthesising a number of new, highly fluorescent, 4-aminonaphthalimides. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis and complete characterization of some ester functionalized vinylic tellurides bearing an aryl ligand with varying steric and electronic effects bound to tellurium is described. Hydrotelluration of methyl propiolate using Ar2Te2/NaBH4 in methanol results in a mixture of stereoisomers of methyl β-(aryltelluro)acrylates, ArTeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOMe (Ar = 4-MeOC6H4, 1A; 1-C10H7, 2A; 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 3A; C5H5FeC5H4, 4A; 4-Me2NC6H4, 5A; and 2-C4H3S, 6A). The same reaction in ethanol provides isomeric mixtures of the ethyl esters ArTeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOEt (1B–6B). However, in the reactions between methyl propiolate and Ar2Te2 (Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 4-Me2NC6H4) in isopropanol or t-butanol, no exchange of alkyl groups between the parent ester and the solvent is observed, instead detelluration of the Ar2Te2 to Ar2Te is a competing reaction along with almost exclusive formation of the (Z)-isomers (3Aa, 5Aa). The geometry of the separated stereoisomers is established in solution, with the help of 1H, 13C and 125Te NMR spectrometry. Of particular interest is the observation that 125Te chemical shifts {deshielded in (Z) compared to (E); Δδ = 106–136 ppm} and the geminal heteronuclear coupling constants {2J(1H–125Te) values for (E) are more than seven times that of the corresponding (Z) isomer} can be used to distinguish between liquid isomers. Structural characterization in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the 2Ba, 3Aa, 3Ba, 5Aa, 8 (Z)-isomers as well as for both stereoisomers of 4-Me2NC6H4TeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOEt (5Ba and 5Bb) is also presented. The carbonyl O atom of the ester group is invariably involved, at least in the solid state, in a secondary bonding interaction with the Te(II) atom. While an intermolecular Te⋯O interaction gives rise to one-dimensional supramolecular arrays in the crystal lattice of 5Bb with (E) configuration, it is realized intramolecularly in the case of the (Z)-isomers due to the cis position of the chalcogen atoms.

De-alloying of S-phase in AA2024-T3 in the presence chlorides, is well-known. However, it is unclear how rare earth mercaptoacetate inhibitors affect this process when immersed in a 0.1. M NaCl solution. This paper analyses data obtained using EPMA on AA2024-T3 surfaces before and after a 16. min immersion period. Cerium and praseodymium mercaptoacetate inhibited the de-alloying process of S-phase particles. Although no significant change in composition was observed for cathodic intermetallics, each appeared to participate in local corrosion reactions as evidenced by the development of surface oxides. Clustering between S-phase and one of the Cu-containing intermetallic domains was also evident.

The reaction of lanthanoid chlorides or nitrates with sodium 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)propionate (Na4hpp) in methanol or water has yielded complexes [La4(4hpp)12(H2O)6]·4H2O·MeOH (1), [Ce2(4hpp)6(H2O)3]·(H2O)·2.5(EtOH) (2a) (after crystallization from ethanol), [Ho(4hpp)3(H2O)2] (5), [Er(4hpp)3(H2O)2]·1.5(H2O) (6), and [Lu(4hpp)3]·H2O crystal composition (7), as well as heterobimetallics [NaCe2(4hpp)7(H2O)2]·3(H2O) (2b), [NaPr2(4hpp)7(H2O)2]·3(H2O) (3), and [NaNd2(4hpp)7(H2O)(MeOH)]·(H2O)·3(MeOH) (4). The structures of homometallic complexes 1, 2a, 6, and 7 reveal one-dimensional coordination polymers and vividly illustrate the effect of lanthanoid contraction with a decline in coordination numbers in the series from 9-11 (1), 9,10 (2a), 8 (6) to 7 (7) through variations in carboxylate coordination and ligation of water. Bimetallic complexes 2a and 4 each exhibit five different carboxylate binding modes as well as coordination of the 4-OH substituent of 4hpp to sodium thereby linking 1D polymer chains into a 2D network with both 9 and 10 coordinate Ln atoms and 6 coordinate sodium. Bulk products after drying lose solvent of crystallization in some cases (2a, 6), or exchange MeOH for water (4). X-ray powder diffraction indicates that bulk 2b and 3 are isotypic, as are bulk 5 and 6. In contrast to the excellent corrosion protection of lanthanum 4-hydroxycinnamate, compound 1 is ineffective in preventing the corrosion of mild steel, thereby establishing the importance of the -CHCH- structural unit of the former in its anti-corrosion properties. However the flexible -CH2-CH2- chain of the 4hpp ligand enables the crystal engineering of its lanthanoid complexes in a wide variety of structures as well as effective crystallization for structure determination, whereas the analogous 4-hydroxycinnamates have so far evaded structural characterization except for Ln = La, Ce owing to crystallization problems.
