The efficiency of five dietary lipid sources (fish oil as control—C; canola oil—CO; poultry fat—PF; pork lard—PL; and oleine oil—OO) were evaluated in juvenile brown trout (58.4±0.7 g) in an experiment conducted over 70 days at 14.6±0.4 °C. The best growth was observed in fish fed the C diet whereas the PL diet fed fish had the best feed utilization. Significant differences in carcass and muscle proximate composition, but not in liver, were noted among fish fed the different dietary treatments. The fatty acid composition of muscle largely reflected that of the diets, while total cholesterol was not affected. The atherogenicity and the thrombogenicity qualities of the trout flesh were modified by the lipid sources. Sensory analysis did not show any significant differences among the cooked fillets with respect to dietary treatments, while in uncooked products, some significant differences were observed. The carnitine palmitoyltransferase I and II (CPT-I and CPT-II) activities of liver and white muscle were assayed for a better understanding of the potential β-oxidation capability of the different dietary lipid sources. The hepatic, but not white muscle CPT-I and CPT-II activities were affected by dietary treatments. This study showed that alternative lipid sources could be used effectively for oil coating extruded diets for brown trout.

The criteria for accepting or rejecting a technology extend beyond the intrinsic properties of the finished product such as physical performance. There are also extrinsic factors such as the history of the product and trust in the manufacturers and suppliers, as well as the perceptions and risk management strategies of various stakeholder groups. A methodology was trialled to take into account the extended supply chain of the product, while simultaneously engaging stakeholders to determine and to understand their perceptual frameworks. Three pine decking products manufactured using different amounts and types of chemical modification were compared using life cycle assessment and the comments of 114 respondents from six stakeholder groups in New Zealand. The results of the perceptual research include a quadrant diagram which allows a visual comparison of the responses of different stakeholders to actual or hypothetical products, aiding the identification of when and why certain technologies may be disqualified from acceptability or become the topic of public debate.

To help avoid conflict and even market rejection, the design and introduction of new technologies can be aided by consideration of the potential concerns of different stakeholder groups. An assessment of their desired goals for technological change may be useful for pre-empting changes in the  parameters of acceptability for technologies. As part of a research  programme evaluating the parameters of acceptability for bio-based  technologies using life cycle assessment of products and an analysis of the  perceptual frameworks of stakeholders, respondents from four stakeholder  groups in New Zealand were interviewed about the desirable and  undesirable trajectories for chemical modification technologies. Three  examples of pine decking products derived using different amounts and  types of chemical modification served to help explore the contemporary  criteria and rationale for acceptability. The responses of the 70 respondents  in those four groups indicated that new technologies need to be able to  prove their worth with regard to both tangible and intangible qualities if they  are to be accepted into the market in the place of either the existing product  or an inorganic competitor.

A general method for the generation of two-dimensional (2D) ordered, large-area, and liftable conducting polymer-nanobowl sheet has been demonstrated via chemical polymerization for the first time. The sheet is made using the monolayer self-assembled from polystyrene (PS) spheres at the aqueous/air interface as template, followed by depositing conducting polymer on the part of PS monolayer submerging in the aqueous phase via chemical polymerization, and core extraction. During the process of polymerization, no substrate is required, which caused the as-prepared patterned conducting polymer sheet can be easily lifted-off and deposited, in full size, on any flat substrate. Bioinorganic natural product chemistry is a relatively unexplored but rapidly developing field with enormous potential for applications in biology, biotechnology (especially in regards to nanomaterial development, synthesis and environmental cleanup) and biomedicine. In this review the occurrence of metals and metalloids in natural products and their synthetic derivatives are reviewed. A broad overview of the area is provided followed by a discussion on the more common metals and metalloids found in natural sources, and an overview of the requirements for future research. Special attention is given to metal hyperaccumulating plants and their use in chemical synthesis and bioremediation, as well as the potential uses of metals and metalloids as therapeutic agents. The potential future applications and development in the field are also discussed.

The addition of an adjuvant to a pesticide usually occurs in a mix-tank, before spray application to the crop. Their interaction is potentially crucial to overall efficacy but has received little attention from a physical-chemical perspective. Study was undertaken by laser diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering to resolve these physical processes. It was shown that migration of the pesticide into the adjuvant droplet occurred in all cases studied. The level of transfer was dependent upon adjuvant level, adjuvant solubility, and surfactant level. For suspension pesticides, dissolution of crystallites within the droplet occurred to a degree limited by solubility. The results directly demonstrate the transfer of the pesticide into the adjuvant carrier. This indicates that for emulsion-based pesticides, application to the target is likely as a homogeneously mixed droplet, whereas for suspension pesticides, solubility may limit transfer and dissolution, leading to heterogeneity in the applied particles.
