The control of energy distribution or energy intensity inside a laser spot using a defocusing method enables the formation of high-quality microchannels of multiple cross-sections in polycarbonate. Moreover, a thermal mathematical model of the process was developed to aid understanding of the process and to allow channel topology prediction.

Routing in ad hoc networks faces significant challenges due to node mobility and dynamic network topology. In this work we propose the use of mobility prediction to reduce the search space required for route discovery. A method of mobility prediction making use of a sectorized cluster structure is described with the proposal of the Prediction based Location Aided Routing (P-LAR) protocol. Simulation study and analytical results of P-LAR find it to offer considerable saving in the amount of routing traffic generated during the route discovery phase.

Next Generation Networks (3G & beyond) will support real-time multimedia applications through traditional wide-area networking concepts as well as hot-spot (WLAN) and ad hoc networking concepts. In order to fulfil the vision of Next Generation Networks a method of maintaining a real-time flow despite frequent topology changes and irregularity in user movement is required. Mobility Prediction has been identified as having applications in the areas of link availability estimation and pro-active routing in ad hoc networks. In this work we present an overview of current mobility prediction schemes that have been proposed. Simulation results are also presented.

Tool wear has become a significant issue associated with the forming of high strength sheet steels in the automotive industry. In order to combat this problem, recent research has been devoted to utilizing the contact results obtained from current sheet metal forming software predictions, in order to develop/apply tool wear models or tool material selection criteria for use in the stamping plant. This investigation aims to determine whether a specialized sheet metal forming software package can correctly capture the complex contact conditions that occur during a typical sheet metal stamping process. The contact pressure at the die radius was compared to results obtained using a general-purpose finite element software package, for a simple channel-forming process. Although some qualitative similarities between the two predictions were observed, it was found that significant differences in the magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure exists. The reasons for the discrepancies in results are discussed with respect to the simplifications and assumptions adopted in the finite element model definitions, and with regards to other results available in the literature.

Ab initio density functional calculations were performed to study finite-length zigzag (7, 0) @ (16, 0) double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with H-termination at the open ends. We find that such a DWCNT nanodot displays a very large magnetic moment at the zigzag edges and the ground state displays symmetric anti-ferromagnetic coupling. When an external electric field is applied along the direction of tube axis, a gap is opened for one spin channel, whereas another spin channel remains metallic, i.e. half metallicity occurs. Our results suggest an important new avenue for the development of CNT-based spintronic materials with enhanced properties. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) performance depends on network topology, activation function, behaviors of data, suitable synapse's values and learning algorithms. Many existing works used different learning algorithms to train ANN for getting high performance. Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is one of the latest successfully Swarm Intelligence based technique for training Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). Normally Gbest Guided Artificial Bee Colony (GGABC) algorithm has strong exploitation process for solving mathematical problems, however the poor exploration creates problems like slow convergence and trapping in local minima. In this paper, the Improved Gbest Guided Artificial Bee Colony (IGGABC) algorithm is proposed for finding global optima. The proposed IGGABC algorithm has strong exploitation and exploration processes. The experimental results show that IGGABC algorithm performs better than that standard GGABC, BP and ABC algorithms for Boolean data classification and time-series prediction tasks.

Application of damage model in combination with finite element analysis to design and optimization of equal channel angular pressing - conform of commercially pure titanium against ductile failure is demonstrated. The properties required for precise simulation of the process and prediction of damage accumulation (equivalent stress as function of equivalent strain and temperature and low bound ductility function) are obtained in the temperature interval 20-400 °C and described in details.
