Rupert Kathner (Ben Mendelsohn) always had stars in his eyes. He wanted to make movies and wanted the whole world to see them. It was at a screening of a pilot for one of his films to studio execs that he met a woman who would change his life. Alma Brooks (Victoria Hill) was working as a secretary at the studio when she met Rupe. When they paired up, a revolutionary filmmaking duo was born. Despite opposition from the Police Commissioner himself, they produced the first true crime movie ever made in Australia: 'The Pyjama Girl Murder Case'. In the end, even the Commissioner gave it his blessing and it was an instant success. In fact, every film they ever made was shown on the big screen. Over the course of 15 years together, these mavericks managed to make a remarkable nineteen movies

Have we really thought through health reform?

With all the discussion around about health care reform in Australia we are missing a fundamental issue about health and illness. They are not the same! There is a disconnect between the rhetoric of reform, the apparent political support for prevention and health promotion, and the realities of decisions being taken and understanding of the underlying assumptions of health determinants.Preventing ill health and promoting health have been seen as the point of departure for good health care, at least rhetorically, ever since the Alma Ata Declaration (1978) and the Ottawa Charter (1986). Australia along with other member states of the WHO is signatories to both and they have underpinned official health policy with a rhetorical flourish in many a document since.

An investigation of play and literacy of Western Australian Indigenous children

 The Investigation of Play and Literacy of Western Australian Indigenous children resulted in the development of the first culturally appropriate assessment of pretend play and social pretend play for Australian Indigenous children. Understanding relationships between pretend play, social pretend play and literacy in the Indigenous context has potential to inform therapy and educational practices.

Children's play in the Australian Indigenous context: the need for a contemporary view

Despite an extensive search, very little literature was found on Australian Indigenous children’s play, and more specifically pretend play. Most of the literature found was written in the period from 1840 to the 1950s and was primarily descriptive. We argue that the literature found on Australian Indigenous children’s play could be interpreted through the prominent classical theories of the day. These theories emphasized the value of play in preparing children for adulthood. The literature is silent in regard to the value and significance of play in Indigenous Australian culture and on the contribution of play to children’s developmental skills such as language, cognition, problem-solving, literacy and learning. This paper presents a review of the available literature and argues for an analysis of contemporary Australian Indigenous children’s play which values play in the development of the child and interprets play behavior within an Indigenous cultural framework.
