One of the most important objectives of cold metal forming research is to develop techniques that enable better manufacturing efficiencies. Within this monitoring of tooling condition is vital to providing high quality manufacturing. The objective of this research is to determine the signature derived from Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors, in order to establish the current condition of a machine tool, as applied to bolt-making. From here we aim to develop and implement an on-line condition monitoring tool for the cold forming process. A review of the literature has shown that much research into AE has been successfully applied in metal cutting operations; such as milling, drilling and turning, but little research has been done related to metal forming. This appears to be due to the complexity of obtaining consistent signals using Acoustic Emission systems, because the presence of noise in many forms. This paper will detail many of the AE signals acquired and analysed through our research. The extensive results indicate this form of condition monitoring is not suitable for metal forming in its current configuration. Further tests are proposed to enable such research to move forward, so a condition monitoring system can be established.

This paper attempts to study the propagating characteristics of acoustic signals emitted from the breakdown of air using time domain numerical model. Acoustic emissions are produced by high voltage faults such as partial discharge and surface discharge. Study of such emissions has become popular among researchers because of the promising correlation between partial and surface discharges and its byproduct, acoustic signal emission. In this paper, propagation characteristics of acoustic signals are studied using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Multiple monitoring points are placed within a designated computation space at different distance away from a source.

Acoustic emission (AE) study based on the acoustic signal ranges from 30MHz to 300MHz has been performed to diagnose the deterioration of insulation level in outdoor ceramic insulator. Different weather conditions combining with artificially created pollution were produced in laboratory and measurements were recorded over a fixed period of time. Pollution due to fine dust particles has been created according to IEC standard under wet and dry conditions. Samples that exhibit internal cracks and fracture were used in this study. The collected AE signals were sampled and analysed using fractal theory. The results of this study have clearly demonstrated the prospect of using AE technique to monitor the working condition of outdoor insulator.

Predicting the acoustic outcome and acceptance of a concert performance hall by its users could be a difficult and onerous task even for an acoustician. This paper discusses a process of how previous research findings from expert authorities have been assembled into a method of evaluating acoustic hall performance. Several parameters of acoustic qualities and quantitative measures have been identified in the literature. These relate to Beranek’s acoustic variables of performance. Existing famous concert halls which have been previously evaluated and rated are now studies in terms of their results from a computer simulation. The research findings suggest that the use of a simulation program can be extremely accurate in the prediction of acoustic performance of new non-existing concert halls.

Analysis of three animated children's films, each with heroic grandmothers motivating their plotlines, suggests a shift in the representational politics mediating older women to child audiences. The films function as critiques, reflections, and mechanisms of contemporary capitalism's available sociocultural locations for older women, modelled through varying degrees of subversive performance. Interrogating the agency potential of housework, nurture and extreme sports, this article assesses the role and function of the “Granny trope” in contemporary children's media.

In the last decade, the efforts of spoken language processing have achieved significant advances, however, the work with emotional recognition has not progressed so far, and can only achieve 50% to 60% in accuracy. This is because a majority of researchers in this field have focused on the synthesis of emotional speech rather than focusing on automating human emotion recognition. Many research groups have focused on how to improve the performance of the classifier they used for emotion recognition, and few work has been done on data pre-processing, such as the extraction and selection of a set of specifying acoustic features instead of using all the possible ones they had in hand. To work with well-selected acoustic features does not mean to delay the whole job, but this will save much time and resources by removing the irrelative information and reducing the high-dimension data calculation. In this paper, we developed an automatic feature selector based on a RF2TREE algorithm and the traditional C4.5 algorithm. RF2TREE applied here helped us to solve the problems that did not have enough data examples. The ensemble learning technique was applied to enlarge the original data set by building a bagged random forest to generate many virtual examples, and then the new data set was used to train a single decision tree, which selects the most efficient features to represent the speech signals for the emotion recognition. Finally, the output of the selector was a set of specifying acoustic features, produced by RF2TREE and a single decision tree.

This paper examines the stock price and volume effects surrounding the announcement of constituent changes to the S&P/ASX 200 and four supplementary indices. Between April 2000 and December 2002 additions to (deletions from) the ASX 200 were associated with a significant price rise (fall) over the 10 day period following the market announcement of the change. Deletions were also associated with a significant fall on the announcement date itself These findings were corroborated by significant increases in trading volume over the same intervals, suggesting heavy trading activity by index funds in response to changes to the ASX 200. Following the implementation of these changes, both additions and deletions experienced a significant price reversion, supporting the price pressure hypothesis. By contrast, none of the supplementary indices displayed evidence of stock price or volume effects, which precludes the information and liquidity hypotheses as viable explanations for the findings of this research.

We evaluate power indices by experimentally measuring the political power embodied in blocks of votes per se. Subjects with differing votes divide a fixed purse by majority rule in online chat rooms under supermision. Chat rooms and processes for selecting subjects reduce or eliminate extraeous political forces leaving logrolling as the primary political force. Results show that various power indices bracket voting power which is more than proportionally concentrated in large players.

Many territorial species have the ability to recognise neighbours from stranger individuals. If the neighbouring individual is assumed to pose less of a threat, the territorial individual responds less and avoids unnecessary confrontations with familiar individuals at established boundaries, thus avoiding the costly energy expenditure associated with fighting. Territorial male Australian fur seals respond more to strangers than to neighbouring males. The present study evaluated which acoustic features were important in the neighbour–stranger recognition process in male Australian fur seals. The results reveal that there was an increase in response strength or intensity from males when they heard more bark units, indicating the importance of repetition to detect a caller. However, lengthening and shortening the inter-unit spaces, (i.e. changing the rhythm of the call) did not appear to significantly affect an animal's response. In addition, the whole frequency spectrum was considered important to recognition with results suggesting that they may vary in their importance. A call containing the dominant and surrounding harmonics was considered important to a male's ability to recognise its neighbour. Furthermore, recognition occurs even with a partial bark, but males need to hear between 25 and 75% of each bark unit from neighbouring seals. Our study highlights which acoustic features induce stronger or weaker responses from territorial males, decoding the important features in neighbour–stranger recognition.

The effect of fenitrothion exposure on birds was examined by measuring aerobic metabolism, blood hemoglobin content, plasma cholinesterases, and body weight for up to 21 d postdose. Peak metabolic rate was measured in a flight chamber in three-dose groups of house sparrows (Passer domesticus; 100 mg/kg = high, 60 mg/kg = medium, 30 mg/kg = low) and one-dose groups of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata; 3 mg/kg) and king quails (Coturnix chinensis; 26 mg/kg). Aerobic metabolism was measured during 1 h of exposure to subfreezing thermal conditions in low-dose house sparrows and king quails (26 mg/kg). Fenitrothion had no effect on metabolic rate during cold exposure or on blood hemoglobin at any time. By contrast, aerobic performance during exercise in sparrows was reduced by 58% (high), 18% (medium), and 20% (low), respectively, 2 d postdose. House sparrows (high) had the longest recovery period for peak metabolic rate (21 d) and plasma cholinesterase activity (14 d). House sparrows (high) and treated king quails had significantly lower myoglobin at 48 h postdose, whereas myoglobin was invariant in zebra finches and house sparrows (medium and low). Cholinesterase was maximally inhibited at 6 h postdose, and had recovered within 24 h, in house sparrows (low), king quails, and zebra finches. Exercise peak metabolic rate in zebra finches and king quails was reduced by 23% at 2 d and 3 d, respectively, despite these birds being asymptomatic in both behavior and plasma cholinesterase activities.

Information regarding the composition and extent of benthic habitats on the South East Australian continental shelf is limited. In this habitat mapping study, multibeam echosounder (MBES) data are integrated with precisely geo-referenced video ground-truth data to quantify benthic biotic communities at Cape Nelson, Victoria, Australia. Using an automated decision tree classification approach, 5 representative biotic groups defined from video analysis were related to hydro-acoustically derived variables in the Cape Nelson survey area. Using a combination of multibeam bathymetry, backscatter and derivative products produced highest overall accuracy (87%) and kappa statistic (0.83). This study demonstrates that decision tree classifiers are capable of integrating variable data types for mapping distributions of benthic biological assemblages, which are important in maintaining biodiversity and other system services in the marine environment.

OBJECTIVE--We examined the associations of objectively measured sedentary time and physical activity with continuous indexes of metabolic risk in Australian adults without known diabetes.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS--An accelerometer was used to derive the percentage of monitoring time spent sedentary and in light-intensity and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity activity, as well as mean activity intensity, in 169 Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) participants (mean age 53.4 years). Associations with waist circumference, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, resting blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and a clustered metabolic risk score were examined.

RESULTS--Independent of time spent in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity activity, there were significant associations of sedentary time, light-intensity time, and mean activity intensity with waist circumference and clustered metabolic risk. Independent of waist circumference, moderate-to-vigorous-intensity activity time was significantly beneficially associated with triglycerides.

CONCLUSIONS--These findings highlight the importance of decreasing sedentary time, as well as increasing time spent in physical activity, for metabolic health.
