 This thesis explored the relationship between attributions of responsibility for motor vehicle accidents and post-injury outcomes among a large sample of TAC clients. Results demonstrated that, despite similar levels of physical injury, people who attribute responsibility for accidents to other persons or circumstances experience poorer physical and mental health recovery in comparison to those who attribute responsibility to themselves.

Big data analytics for traffic accidents is a hot topic and has significant values for a smart and safe traffic in the city. Based on the massive traffic accident data from October 2014 to March 2015 in Xiamen, China, we propose a novel accident occurrences analytics method in both spatial and temporal dimensions to predict when and where an accident with a specific crash type will occur consequentially by whom. Firstly, we analyze and visualize accident occurrences in both temporal and spatial view. Second, we illustrate spatio-temporal visualization results through two case studies in multiple road segments, and the impact of weather on crash types. These findings of accident occurrences analysis and visualization would not only help traffic police department implement instant personnel assignments among simultaneous accidents, but also inform individual drivers about accident-prone sections and the time span which requires their most attention.

INTRODUCTION: The fundamental role of alcohol in the lives of young Australians is mirrored in the level of drinking by adolescents. In 2001, more than one in four Australian adolescents aged 14-19 years consumed alcohol weekly. Teenagers in rural areas are more likely to consume alcohol than their metropolitan counterparts. Parents are key 'gatekeepers' of adolescent behaviour and as such are a salient group to consider in relation to adolescent alcohol use. The aim of this study was to explore parents' attitudes, beliefs, concerns and receptiveness to harm minimisation strategies with respect to teenage use of alcohol.

METHODS:
A convenience sample of parents with adolescent children attended a series of focus groups across the north and north-western area of the State of Victoria, Australia. Schools were approached to advertise the project and invite parents to participate. Snowball sampling was used to enhance recruitment.

RESULTS:
Parents described patterns of alcohol use such as 'drinking to get drunk' and the influence of both parents and peers on the consumption of alcohol by adolescents. Few parents were concerned about the long-term risks of alcohol use by teenagers; rather they were more concerned about the short-term harms, for example, road trauma and other accidents and risky behaviours such as binge drinking. Parents indicated that they perceived alcohol to be less harmful than other drugs and many indicated that alcohol was often not perceived to be a drug. A number of strategies were adopted by parents to negotiate teenagers' drinking and to minimise the risks associated with alcohol use. These included transporting teenagers to parties, providing teenagers with a mobile phone, setting clear guidelines about alcohol use and/or providing teenagers with a small amount of alcohol. These were seen by parents as strategies for reducing the risks associated with alcohol consumption. Many parents reported that they do not feel well informed about alcohol use and how and when to use harm reduction strategies.

CONCLUSIONS:
Rural parents are unsure how to respond to teenagers' alcohol use and drunkenness. While some parental strategies for harm reduction (such as supplying adolescents with a small amount of alcohol) may have good face validity in reducing alcohol consumption among adolescents, these strategies are not supported by previous research findings.

Fire-related accidents often result in injuries and sometimes death, which can be prevented through fire safety training. To estimate the extent to which fire safety training should be provided, it is essential to assess the current level of fire safety knowledge within the general community. Thus the objectives of the present study were to explore: (a) the level of fire safety knowledge among people of different age groups and investigate its relationship to the level of fire safety training, and (b) the manner in which people from different age groups would respond to a fire based on their fire safety training. Data from 158 participants aged between 18 and 80 years showed that fire safety training increases: (a) the level of fire safety knowledge and, (b) the accuracy of response to a fire. The results also show that middle-aged individuals would respond more accurately to a fire than younger and older adults. The findings demonstrate the importance of fire safety training in enhancing people's fire safety knowledge and their response in the event of a fire which could lead to a reduction in the rate of fire casualties. There are implications for incorporating fire safety training as part of health improvement programs to reduce the number of fire-related injuries and fatalities.

Numerous experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the collapse of tubular metallic crash structures under axial compression. Some simple theoretical models have been developed but these often assume one type of progressive collapse, which is not always representative of the real situation. Finite Element (FE) models, when further refined, have the potential to predict the actual collapse mode and how it influences the load-displacement and energy absorption characteristics. This paper describes an FE modelling investigation with the explicit code LS−DYNA. An automatic mesh generation programme written by the authors is used to set up shell and solid element tube models. Mesh specification issues and features relating to the contact and friction models are discussed in detail. The crush modes, load-deflection characteristics and energy absorption values found in the simulations are compared with a reasonable degree of correlation to those observed in a physical testing programme; however, improvements are still required.

The concept of a construction accident is extending from the traditional construction operation accident to contain all non-construction operation accidents in personnel's safety and health, global and local environment, and the insufficient facility planning for security and emergency. Construction accidents may cause human, social and sustainable tragedies directly, and indirectly delay construction progresses and adversely affect the reputation of construction industry. In order to reduce all possible construction accidents, lots of non-construction operation regulations are constituted according to the authoritative regulations and previous construction experiences. However, these non-construction operation regulations are not integrated with the construction production or process planning. This may cause that some of these non-construction operation regulations ,are disregarded in the practical construction progress. The aim of this research is to explore the possibility, methodology and techniques in practice in order to identify and specify the non-construction operation regulations for every individual construction production and process. Therefore, the construction planning does not only represent the time and resources of each construction product or process, but also its non-construction operation regulations. The main outcomes of this research are a systematic identification of non-construction operation regulations, and the potential techniques for integrating them with the construction planning.

In this paper we discuss the design and development of a novel intelligent headrest system. Developed to reduce neck injuries resulting from up to 63% of rear end accidents, this system uses inductive sensing technology to establish the position of a driver or passenger's skull in a vehicle. Once detected, the system autonomously places the vehicle's headrest in a position that best support an occupant's head in the case of an accident. Sensor construction, mechatronic design and controller selection and real world tests of the system under various conditions are covered.

Children under five have the highest rate of fire-related accidents (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2001). It is therefore essential to develop effective fire safety education programs to prevent casualties due to a fire. At present, there are fire education programs conducted across Australia for primary school children. However, it is vital that these programs get their message across to the children in the most efficient manner to help children retain the information. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of the 'Fire Ed' program conducted in Victoria and assessed the retention of fire safety information in children in preparatory and Grade five levels. The findings suggest that the information is not retained over long periods of time. Suggestions are made to provide fire safety education in line with
theories of cognitive development to make it more effective.

Mobile phones offer a new marketing channel, but socially there are concerns about their intrusiveness. Marketers need to understand the social etiquettes governing their use in order to exploit their value. In addition, the use of mobiles whilst driving is the cause of car accidents and is illegal in some parts of the world. A study of 893 United States, Australian and Chinese tertiary students showed that there was widespread but not universal agreement that usage was inappropriate in places of worship, classrooms and libraries or while driving a car. Australian and Chinese students were more tolerant of mobile usage than Americans in most situations, apart from use while driving. The study showed a conflict between actual driving behaviour and views on the desirability of using mobiles while driving. The persistence of talking while driving should be a concern to those who promote road safety. Use of SMS was more broadly tolerated in class and in picture theatres than was speaking on a mobile phone. The use of inbound and outbound telemarketing is limited by the social etiquettes discovered. Further research into tolerable mobile behaviour in various public and private spaces is required in order to make best use of this marketing medium.
