We propose a generalization of the notion of the absorbent element of aggregation operators. Our construction involves tuples of values that are absorbent, that is, that decide the result of aggregation. We analyze some basic properties of this generalization and determine the absorbent tuples of some popular classes of aggregation operators.

We generalize the notion of an absorbent element of aggregation operators. Our construction involves tuples of values that decide the result of aggregation. Absorbent tuples are useful to model situations in which certain decision makers may decide the outcome irrespective of the opinion of the others. We examine the most important classes of aggregation operators in respect to their absorbent tuples, and also construct new aggregation operators with predefined sets of absorbent tuples.

We generalize the concepts of neutral and absorbent elements of aggregation operators. We introduce two types of tuples of values: the neutral tuples and the absorbent tuples. the neutral tuples are useful in situations in which information from different sources, or preferences of several decision makers, cancel each other. Absorbent tuples are useful in situations in which certain decision makers may decide the outcome irrespective of the opinion of the others. We examine the most important classes of aggregation operators in respect to their neutral and absorbent tuples.

When using linguistic approaches to solve decision problems, we need the techniques for computing with words (CW). Together with the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation models (i.e., the Herrera and Mart´ınez model and the Wang and Hao model), some computational techniques for CW are also developed. In this paper, we define the concept of numerical scale and extend the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation models under the numerical scale. We find that the key of computational techniques
based on linguistic 2-tuples is to set suitable numerical scale with
the purpose of making transformations between linguistic 2-tuples
and numerical values. By defining the concept of the transitive
calibration matrix and its consistent index, this paper develops an optimization model to compute the numerical scale of the linguistic term set. The desired properties of the optimization model are also presented. Furthermore, we discuss how to construct the transitive calibration matrix for decision problems using linguistic preference relations and analyze the linkage between the consistent index of the transitive calibration matrix and one of the linguistic preference relations. The results in this paper are pretty helpful to complete the fuzzy 2-tuple representation models for CW.

The validity of the priority vector used in the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) relies on two factors: the selection of a numerical scale and the selection of a prioritization method. The traditional AHP selects only one numerical scale (e.g., the Saaty scale) and one prioritization method (e.g., the eigenvector method) for each particular problem. For this traditional selection approach, there is disagreement on which numerical scale and prioritization method is better in deriving a priority vector. In fact, the best numerical scale and the best prioritization method both rely on the content of the pairwise comparison data provided by the AHP decision makers. By defining a set of concepts regarding the scale function and the linguistic pairwise comparison matrices (LPCMs) of the priority vector and by using LPCMs to unify the format of the input and output of AHP, this paper extends the AHP prioritization process under the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic model. Based on the extended AHP prioritization process, we present two performance measure criteria to evaluate the effect of the numerical scales and prioritization methods. We also use the performance measure criteria to develop a 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic multicriteria approach to select the best numerical scales and the best prioritization methods for different LPCMs. In this paper, we call this type of selection the individual selection of the numerical scale and prioritization method. We also compare this individual selection with traditional selection by using both random and real data and show better results with individual selection.

An important task in multiple-criteria decision making is how to learn the weights and parameters of an aggregation function from empirical data. We consider this in the context of quantifying ecological diversity, where such data is to be obtained as a set of pairwise comparisons specifying that one community should be considered more diverse than another. A problem that arises is how to collect a sufficient amount of data for reliable model determination without overloading individuals with the number of comparisons they need to make. After providing an algorithm for determining criteria weights and an overall ranking from such information, we then investigate the improvement in accuracy if ranked 3-tuples are supplied instead of pairs. We found that aggregation models could be determined accurately from significantly fewer 3-tuple comparisons than pairs. © 2013 IEEE.

Study objective: To compare three dressing types in terms of their ability to protect against infection and promote healing, patient comfort, and cost-effectiveness.

Design: Prospective, randomized controlled trial.

Setting: Major metropolitan, academically affiliated, tertiary referral center.

Patients: Seven hundred thirty-seven patients were randomized to receive a dry absorbent dressing (n = 243) [Primapore; Smith & Nephew; Sydney, NSW, Australia], a hydrocolloid dressing (n = 267) [Duoderm Thin ConvaTec; Mulgrave, VIC, Australia], or a hydroactive dressing (n = 227) [Opsite; Smith & Nephew] in the operating theater on skin closure.

Results: There was no difference in the rate of wound infection or wound healing between treatment groups. The Primapore dressing was the most comfortable and cost-effective dressing option for the sternotomy wound. Duoderm Thin dressings were associated with increased wound exudate (p < 0.001), poor dressing integrity (p < 0.001), more frequent dressing changes (p < 0.001), more discomfort with removal (p < 0.05), and increased cost (p < 0.001).

Conclusions: In the context of no additional benefit for the prevention of wound infection or the rate of wound healing for any of the three dressing products examined, dry absorbent dressings are the most comfortable and cost-effective products for sternotomy wounds following cardiac surgery.

Extensions of aggregation functions to Atanassov orthopairs (often referred to as intuitionistic fuzzy sets or AIFS) usually involve replacing the standard arithmetic operations with those defined for the membership and non-membership orthopairs. One problem with such constructions is that the usual choice of operations has led to formulas which do not generalize the aggregation of ordinary fuzzy sets (where the membership and non-membership values add to 1). Previous extensions of the weighted arithmetic mean and ordered weighted averaging operator also have the absorbent element 〈1,0〉, which becomes particularly problematic in the case of the Bonferroni mean, whose generalizations are useful for modeling mandatory requirements. As well as considering the consistency and interpretability of the operations used for their construction, we hold that it is also important for aggregation functions over higher order fuzzy sets to exhibit analogous behavior to their standard definitions. After highlighting the main drawbacks of existing Bonferroni means defined for Atanassov orthopairs and interval data, we present two alternative methods for extending the generalized Bonferroni mean. Both lead to functions with properties more consistent with the original Bonferroni mean, and which coincide in the case of ordinary fuzzy values.

Herrera and Mart́inez initiated a 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model for computing with words. Moreover, Wang and Hao further developed a new 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model to deal with the linguistic term sets that are not uniformly and symmetrically distributed. This study proposes another linguistic computational model based on 2-tuples and intervals, which we call an interval version of the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model. The proposed model possesses three steps: 1) interval numerical scale; 2) computation based on interval numbers; and 3) a generalized inverse operation of the interval numerical scale. The first step transforms linguistic terms into interval numbers, based on which the second step is executed with output as an interval number. Finally, this number is then mapped into the interval of the linguistic 2-tuples by the generalized inverse operation. This study also generalizes the numerical scale approach, presented in the Wang and Hao model, to set the interval numerical scale, by considering the context where semantics of linguistic terms are defined by interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2 FSs). In order to compare the proposed model with the existing linguistic computational model based on IT2 FSs, we have conducted extensive simulations. The simulations demonstrate that the results obtained by our proposal are consistent with the results of the linguistic computational model based on IT2 FSs (in some sense) in a vast majority of cases.

Porous carbon nanotube/polyvinylidene fluoride (CNT/PVDF) composite material can be fabricated via formation and freeze-drying of a gel. The field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and pore size distribution analysis reveal that the introduction of a small amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can effectively increase the surface roughness and porosity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Contact angle measurements of water and oil indicate that the as-obtained composite material is superhydrophobic and superoleophilic. Further experiments demonstrate that these composite material can be efficiently used to separate/absorb the insoluble oil from oil polluted water as membrane/absorbent. Most importantly, the electrical conductivity of such porous CNT/PVDF composite material can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of CNT to PVDF without obviously changing the superhydrophobicity or superoleophilicity. The unique properties of the porous CNT/PVDF composite material make it a promising candidate for oil-polluted water treatment as well as water-repellent catalyst-supporting electrode material.

Hydrogel nanofibers with high water-absorption capacity and excellent biocompatibility offer wide use in biomedical areas. In this study, hydrogel nanofibers from polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and PVP/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) blend were prepared by electrospinning and by subsequent heat treatment. The effects of post-electrospinning heat treatment and PVP/PAA ratio on hydrogel properties of the nanofibers were examined. Heat treatment at a temperature above 180°C was found to play a key role in forming insoluble and water-absorbent nanofibers. Both PVP and PVP/PAA nanofibers showed high morphology stability in water and excellent water retention capacity. The swelling ratio of PVP/PAA nanofibers declined with increasing heating temperature and decreasing PVP/PAA unit ratio. In comparison with dense casting films, these nanofiber membranes showed nearly doubled swelling ratio.

The methodology for selecting the individual numerical scale and prioritization method has recently been presented and justified in the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, we further propose a novel AHP-group decision making (GDM) model in a local context (a unique criterion), based on the individual selection of the numerical scale and prioritization method. The resolution framework of the AHP-GDM with the individual numerical scale and prioritization method is first proposed. Then, based on linguistic Euclidean distance (LED) and linguistic minimum violations (LMV), the novel consensus measure is defined so that the consensus degree among decision makers who use different numerical scales and prioritization methods can be analyzed. Next, a consensus reaching model is proposed to help decision makers improve the consensus degree. In this consensus reaching model, the LED-based and LMV-based consensus rules are proposed and used. Finally, a new individual consistency index and its properties are proposed for the use of the individual numerical scale and prioritization method in the AHP-GDM. Simulation experiments and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed model.

Event detection on Twitter has become a promising research direction due to Twitter's popularity, up-to-date feature, free writing style and so on. Unfortunately, it's a challenge to analyze Twitter dataset for event detection, since the informal expressions of short messages comprise many abbreviations, Internet buzzwords, spelling mistakes, meaningless contents etc. Previous techniques proposed for Twitter event detection mainly focus on clustering bursty words related to the events, while ignoring that these words may not be easily interpreted to clear event descriptions. In this paper, we propose a General and Event-related Aspects Model (GEAM), a new topic model for event detection from Twitter that associates General topics and Event-related Aspects with events. We then introduce a collapsed Gibbs sampling algorithm to estimate the word distributions of General topics and Event-related Aspects in GEAM. Our experiments based on over 7 million tweets demonstrate that GEAM outperforms the state-of-the-art topic model in terms of both Precision and DERate (measuring Duplicated Events Rate detected). Particularly, GEAM can get better event representation by providing a 4-tuple (Time, Locations, Entities, Keywords) structure of the detected events. We show that GEAM not only can be used to effectively detect events but also can be used to analyze event trends. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
