Main challenges for a terminal implementation are efficient realization of the receiver, especially for channel estimation (CE) and equalization. In this paper, training based recursive least square (RLS) channel estimator technique is presented for a long term evolution (LTE) single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) wireless communication system. This CE scheme uses adaptive RLS estimator which is able to update parameters of the estimator continuously, so that knowledge of channel and noise statistics are not required. Simulation results show that the RLS CE scheme with 500 Hz Doppler frequency has 3 dB better performances compared with 1.5 kHz Doppler frequency.

The next generation of wireless networks is envisioned as convergence of heterogeneous radio access networks. Since technologies are becoming more collaborative, a possible integration between IEEE 802.16 based network and previous generation of telecommunication systems (2G, ..., 3G) must be considered. A novel quality function based vertical handoff (VHO) algorithm, based on proposed velocity and average receive power estimation algorithms is discussed in this paper. The short-time Fourier analysis of received signal strength (RSS) is employed to obtain mobile speed and average received power estimates. Performance of quality function based VHO algorithm is evaluated by means of measure of quality of service (QoS). Simulation results show that proposed quality function, brings significant gains in QoS and more efficient use of resources can be achieved.

In this chapter the authors discuss the physical insight of the role of wireless communication in RFID systems. In this respect, this chapter gives a brief introduction on the wireless communication model followed by various communication schemes. The chapter also discusses various channel impairments and the statistical modeling of fading channels based on the environment in which the RFID tag and reader may be present. The chapter deals with the fact that the signal attenuations can be dealt with up to some level by using multiple antennas at the reader transmitter and receiver to improve the performance. Thus, this chapter discusses the use of transmit diversity at the reader transmitter to transmit multiple copies of the signal. Following the above, the use of receiver combining techniques are discussed, which shows how the multiple copies of the signal arriving at the reader receiver from the tag are combined to reduce the effects of fading. The chapter then discusses various modulation techniques required to modulate the signal before transmitting over the channel. It then presents a few channel estimation algorithms, according to which, by estimating the channel state information of the channel paths through which transmission takes place, performance of the wireless system can be further increased. Finally, the Antenna selection techniques are presented, which further helps in improving the system performance.

In this paper, we address the problem of blind separation of spatially correlated signals, which is encountered in some emerging applications, e.g., distributed wireless sensor networks and wireless surveillance systems. We preprocess the source signals in transmitters prior to transmission. Specifically, the source signals are first filtered by a set of properly designed precoders and then the coded signals are transmitted. On the receiving side, the Z-domain features of the precoders are exploited to separate the coded signals, from which the source signals are recovered. Based on the proposed precoders, a closed-form algorithm is derived to estimate the coded signals and the source signals. Unlike traditional blind source separation approaches, the proposed method does not require the source signals to be uncorrelated, sparse, or nonnegative. Compared with the existing precoder-based approach, the new method uses precoders with much lower order, which reduces the delay in data transmission and is easier to implement in practice.

This paper deals with blind separation of spatially correlated signals mixed by an instantaneous system. Taking advantage of the fact that the source signals are accessible in some man-made systems such as wireless communication systems, we preprocess the source signals in transmitters by a set of properly designed first-order precoders and then the coded signals are transmitted. At the receiving side, information about the precoders are utilized to perform signal separation. Compared with the existing precoder-based methods, the new method only employs the simplest first-order precoders, which reduces the delay in data transmission and is easier to implement in practical applications.

This paper considers the sum-rate of wireless broadcast systems with multiple antennas at the base station. In a conventional MIMO-BC system with a large number of users, selecting an optimal subset of users to maximizing the overall system capacity is a key design issue. This paper presents a novel approach to investigate the sum-rate using Eigen Value Decomposition (EVD). Particularly, we derive the lower bound on sum-rate of a conventional MIMO-BC using a completely different approach compared to the existing approaches. The paper formulates the rate maximization problem for any number of users and any number of transmitting antennas using EVD approach of the channel matrix. This also shows the impact of channel angle information on the sum-rate of conventional MIMO-BC. Numerical results confirm the benefits of our technique in various MIMO communication scenarios.

Advances in information and communications technology has led to a significant advances in noncontact portable devices capable of monitoring vital signals of patients. These wearable and implantable bio-monitoring systems allow collections of wearable sensors to be constructed as a Body Area Network (BAN) to record biological data for a subject. Such systems can be used to improve the quality of life and treatment outcomes for patients. One of the main uses for a bio-monitoring system is to record biological data values from a subject and provide them to a doctor or other medical professional. However, wearable bio-monitoring systems raise unique security considerations. In this paper, we discuss some of the security considerations that have arisen in our work around communications agnostic bio-monitoring, and how we have addressed these concerns. Furthermore, the issues related to the identifying and trusting sender and receiver entities are discussed.

The telecommunication industry is entering a new era. The increased traffic demands imposed by the huge number of always-on connections require a quantum leap in the field of enabling techniques. Furthermore, subscribers expect ever increasing quality of experience with its joys and wonders, while network operators and service providers aim for cost-efficient networks. These requirements require a revolutionary change in the telecommunications industry, as shown by the success of virtualization in the IT industry, which is now driving the deployment and expansion of cloud computing. Telecommunications providers are currently rethinking their network architecture from one consisting of a multitude of black boxes with specialized network hardware and software to a new architecture consisting of “white box” hardware running a multitude of specialized network software. This network software may be data plane software providing network functions virtualization (NVF) or control plane software providing centralized network management — software defined networking (SDN). It is expected that these architectural changes will permeate networks as wide ranging in size as the Internet core networks, to metro networks, to enterprise networks and as wide ranging in functionality as converged packet-optical networks, to wireless core networks, to wireless radio access networks.

Deployment of mobile technologies and applications in health care are becoming prevalent worldwide. As mobile innovation and standards in wireless continue to evolve, so does the mobile health care information systems framework. In this paper, we explore this evolving framework by synthesising current technologies, applications, issues and examining this through the actor-network theory (ANT) which seeks to understand socio-technical change by adopting a symmetric treatment of people and technologies.
