The profiles for the water table height h(x, t) in a shallow sloping aquifer are reexamined with a solution of the nonlinear Boussinesq equation. We demonstrate that the previous anomaly first reported by Brutsaert [1994] that the point at which the water table h first becomes zero at x = L at time t = t c remains fixed at this point for all times t > t c is actually a result of the linearization of the Boussinesq equation and not, as previously suggested [ Brutsaert, 1994 ; Verhoest and Troch, 2000 ], a result of the Dupuit assumption. Rather, by examination of the nonlinear Boussinesq equation the drying front, i.e., the point x f at which h is zero for times t ≥ t c , actually recedes downslope as physically expected. This points out that the linear Boussinesq equation should be used carefully when a zero depth is obtained as the concept of an “average” depth loses meaning at that time.

In this article, the authors draw on literatures outside sexual offending and make suggestions for working more positively and constructively with these offenders. Although the management of risk is a necessary feature of treatment, it needs to occur in conjunction with a strength-based approach. An exclusive focus on risk can lead to overly confrontational therapeutic encounters, a lack of rapport between offenders and clinicians, and fragmented and mechanistic treatment delivery. The authors suggest that the goals of sexual offender treatment should be the attainment of good lives, which is achieved by enhancing hope, increasing self-esteem, developing approach goals, and working collaboratively with the offenders. Examples are provided of how these targets may be met. When this is done within a therapeutic context where the treatment providers display empathy and warmth and are rewarding and directive, the authors suggest that treatment effects will be maximized.

Using monoclonal antibodies raised against pollen-specific proteins, we have isolated a cDNA clone, designatedOry-Cl from a rice anther cDNA expression library. A transcript corresponding to theOry-Cl gene showed preferential expression in anthers. This transcript was not detected in any vegetative tissues analysed. RNA gel blot analysis of different developmental stages of anthers showed that theOry-Cl gene is expressed at later stages of pollen development. In situ hybridisation showed that theOry-Cl transcript is only present in mature pollen.

Impaired mitochondrial function is fundamental feature of heart failure (HF) and myocardial ischemia. In addition to the effects of heightened oxidative stress, altered nitric oxide (NO) metabolism, generated by a mitochondrial NO synthase, has also been proposed to impact upon mitochondrial function. However, the mechanism responsible for arginine transport into mitochondria and the effect of HF on such a process is unknown. We therefore aimed to characterize mitochondrial L-arginine transport and to investigate the hypothesis that impaired mitochondrial L-arginine transport plays a key role in the pathogenesis of heart failure and myocardial injury.

William Pomat is a Papua New Guinean who studied in Australia on two occasions; at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 1992-1993, and at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2001-2004. On both occasions he studied on Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Scholarships. At UNSW, he completed his Masters in Immunology and at UWA he completed he PhD in the same field. The interview was conducted on 9 July 2014 by Dr. Jonathan Ritchie of Deakin University and Dr. Musawe Sinebare of the Pacific Adventist University.
