Objective: To compare the energy expenditure of adolescents when playing sedentary and new generation active computer games.

Design: Cross sectional comparison of four computer games. Setting Research laboratories.

Participants: Six boys and five girls aged 13–15 years.

Procedure: Participants were fitted with a monitoring device validated to predict energy expenditure. They played four computer games for 15 minutes each. One of the games was sedentary (XBOX 360) and the other three were active (Wii Sports).

Main outcome measure:
Predicted energy expenditure, compared using repeated measures analysis of variance.

Results:
Mean (standard deviation) predicted energy expenditure when playing Wii Sports bowling (190.6 (22.2) kl/kg/min), tennis (202.5 (31.5) kl/kg/min), and boxing (198.1 (33.9) kl/kg/min) was significantly greater than when playing sedentary games (125.5 (13.7) kl/kg/min) (P<0.001). Predicted energy expenditure was at least 65.1 (95% confidence interval 47.3 to 82.9) kl/kg/min greater when playing active rather than sedentary games.

Conclusions:
Playing new generation active computer games uses significantly more energy than playing sedentary computer games but not as much energy as playing the sport itself. The energy used when playing active Wii Sports games was not of high enough intensity to contribute towards the recommended daily amount of exercise in children.

Objectives: Recombinant erythropoietin has a strong impact on aerobic power and is therefore one of the most potent doping agents in endurance sports. The anti-doping control of this synthetic hormone relies on the detection, in the urine, of its isoelectric pattern, which differs from that of the corresponding natural hormone, the latter being typically more acidic than the former. However, a small number of natural urinary patterns, referred to as atypical patterns, are less acidic than the dominant form. Based on anecdotal evidence, the occurrence of such patterns seems to be related to particular strenuous exercises. This study aimed to demonstrate this relation using a strenuous exercise protocol.

Design: Seven athletes took part in a training protocol including a series of supramaximal short-duration exercises. Urine and blood samples were collected throughout the protocols.

Settings: World Cycling Center, Aigle, Switzerland, and research laboratories.

Participants: Seven top-level athletes (cyclists) were involved in this study.

Main Outcome Measures: Erythropoietin (EPO) isoelectric patterns were obtained by submitting blood and urine samples to isoelectric focusing. Additional protein dosages were performed.

Results: Supramaximal short-duration exercises induced the transformation of typical urinary natural EPO patterns into atypical ones. None of the obtained atypical patterns fulfilled the 3 criteria mandatory for reporting an adverse analytical finding. Serum EPO patterns were not affected by the exercises that caused the transformation of urinary patterns.

Conclusion: An exercise-induced transient renal dysfunction is proposed as a hypothetic explanation for these observations that rely on parallel investigations of proteinuria in the same samples.

A transdisciplinary, One Health approach is proposed for the coordination of wildlife health diagnostics, research, and policy development. In some countries, considerable effort has been made to establish specific activities including surveillance and integration of wildlife health within diagnostic and research laboratories. We suggest that some of these activities can be improved and many countries still require national structures to deal with wildlife disease investigation and management. We also suggest that scientists in this field should actively engage with national and international organizations and conferences to influence the development of policy, diagnostics, research, and management of emerging wildlife diseases.

Every field of knowledge has two aspects: a practice component, and research into the advancement of the discipline. Chemical education is the same. Chemical education research (CER) aims to evaluate improvements and innovation in practice and also investigate how students learn chemistry. Examples illustrate the scope of CER, with analogies to better well-known examples of research in chemistry.

One recurring theme in chemical education is the improvement of existing laboratory exercises, the development of new laboratory exercises, and the testing of the activities to ensure their scientific validity and robustness, and finally evaluation and feedback to assess the effectiveness of the experiment by students and teaching staff.

Another active area of research is the analysis of curriculum in terms of logical versus psychological progressions of topics order, and trials on better sequences of topics for better outcomes.

have lead to advances in chemistry, with microwave-assisted synthesis, microfluidic devices, and better spectrometers to name just a few. So too, advances in technology have changed the practice of chemical education.

Other CER has examined new uses for mobile phones, using podcasts to enhance lectures, as flashcards, or to access chemistry resources, student-created videos and photo blogs, and other advances in technology.

Yet another area of CER is in the development and validation of these survey instruments.

Research is about collecting proof to support or refute a hypothesis. Chemical education research is no different. Chemical education seeks to improve the learning of chemical science. Chemical education research collects data to evaluate whether a particular course of action is good or bad for learning.

Sulfonation is an important reaction in the metabolism of numerous xenobiotics, drugs, and endogenous compounds. A supergene family of enzymes called sulfotransferases (SULTs) catalyze this reaction. In most cases, the addition of a sulfonate moiety to a compound increases its water solubility and decreases its biological activity. However, many of these enzymes are also capable of bioactivating procarcinogens to reactive electrophiles. In humans three SULT families, SULT1, SULT2, and SULT4, have been identified that contain at least thirteen distinct members. SULTs have a wide tissue distribution and act as a major detoxification enzyme system in adult and the developing human fetus. Nine crystal structures of human cytosolic SULTs have now been determined, and together with site-directed mutagenesis experiments and molecular modeling, we are now beginning to understand the factors that govern distinct but overlapping substrate specificities. These studies have also provided insight into the enzyme kinetics and inhibition characteristics of these enzymes. The regulation of human SULTs remains as one of the least explored areas of research in the field, though there have been some
recent advances on the molecular transcription mechanism controlling the individual SULT promoters. Interindividual variation in sulfonation capacity may be important in determining an individual’s response to xenobiotics, and recent studies have begun to suggest roles for SULT polymorphism in disease susceptibility. This review aims to provide a summary of our present understanding of the function of human cytosolic sulfotransferases.

The criteria for accepting or rejecting a technology extend beyond the intrinsic properties of the finished product such as physical performance. There are also extrinsic factors such as the history of the product and trust in the manufacturers and suppliers, as well as the perceptions and risk management strategies of various stakeholder groups. A methodology was trialled to take into account the extended supply chain of the product, while simultaneously engaging stakeholders to determine and to understand their perceptual frameworks. Three pine decking products manufactured using different amounts and types of chemical modification were compared using life cycle assessment and the comments of 114 respondents from six stakeholder groups in New Zealand. The results of the perceptual research include a quadrant diagram which allows a visual comparison of the responses of different stakeholders to actual or hypothetical products, aiding the identification of when and why certain technologies may be disqualified from acceptability or become the topic of public debate.

To help avoid conflict and even market rejection, the design and introduction of new technologies can be aided by consideration of the potential concerns of different stakeholder groups. An assessment of their desired goals for technological change may be useful for pre-empting changes in the  parameters of acceptability for technologies. As part of a research  programme evaluating the parameters of acceptability for bio-based  technologies using life cycle assessment of products and an analysis of the  perceptual frameworks of stakeholders, respondents from four stakeholder  groups in New Zealand were interviewed about the desirable and  undesirable trajectories for chemical modification technologies. Three  examples of pine decking products derived using different amounts and  types of chemical modification served to help explore the contemporary  criteria and rationale for acceptability. The responses of the 70 respondents  in those four groups indicated that new technologies need to be able to  prove their worth with regard to both tangible and intangible qualities if they  are to be accepted into the market in the place of either the existing product  or an inorganic competitor.

Nitric oxide is an important regulator of blood pressure in mammals. This study provided new information on the role of nitric-oxide releasing sympathetic nerves in vascular regulation of lower vertebrates. The research outcomes advance knowledge on the potential role of these unique nerves in the control of the lower vertebrate cardiovascular system.

Coloured conducting textiles have shown a wide range of potential applications in heating fabrics, electromagnetic wave absorption, and wearable optoelectronic devices. This research aimed at clarifying some issues occurred in the research project on coloured conductive textiles. The investigation firstly clarified a possible chemical reaction that took place between a commercial dispersing dye (Terasil Red G) and the conducting polymer polypyrrole, through chemical separation, structural identification and spectrum characterisations. Then, a series of acidic dyes were introduced into polypyrrole matrix during the vapour coating of conducting polymer on the wool fabrics. Colour and thermal stability studies were conducted. Finally, the polypyrrole nanoparticles (particle size several~200nm) were prepared by a microemulsion polymerisation technique. An acid dye was used as the dopant to re-dope the nanoparticles. The effect of the acidic dye on the optical absorption of nanoparticles was studied. Applying the conducting nanoparticles on wool fabrics may open an alternative path to achieve the coloured conducting textiles.

This Account covers research dating from the early 1960s in the field of low-melting molten salts and hydrates,which has recently become popular under the rubric of “ionic liquids”. It covers understanding gained in the principal author’s laboratories (initially in Australia, but mostly in the U.S.A.) from spectroscopic, dynamic, and thermodynamic studies and includes recent applications of this understanding in the fields of energy conversion and biopreservation. Both protic and aprotic varieties of ionic liquids are included, but recent studies have focused on the protic class because of the special applications made possible by the highly variable proton activities available in these liquids.

This study investigated the role of a permanently manned Australian Antarctic research station (Casey Station) as a source of contemporary persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to the local environment. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and poly- and perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) were found in indoor dust and treated wastewater effluent of the station. PBDE (e.g., BDE-209 26-820 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw)) and PFAS levels (e.g., PFOS 3.8-2400 ng g(-1) (dw)) in dust were consistent with those previously reported in homes and offices from Australia, reflecting consumer products and materials of the host nation. The levels of PBDEs and PFASs in wastewater (e.g., BDE-209 71-400 ng L(-1)) were in the upper range of concentrations reported for secondary treatment plants in other parts of the world. The chemical profiles of some PFAS samples were, however, different from domestic profiles. Dispersal of chemicals into the immediate marine and terrestrial environments was investigated by analysis of abiotic and biotic matrices. Analytes showed decreasing concentrations with increasing distance from the station. This study provides the first evidence of PFAS input to Polar regions via local research stations and demonstrates the introduction of POPs recently listed under the Stockholm Convention into the Antarctic environment through local human activities.

Carbon Nexus (www.carbonnexus.com.au) is a globally significant research facility at Deakin University focused on the manufacture and use of carbon fibre. Carbon Nexus represents a partnership between Deakin University and the Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing (VCAMM) and houses two production lines capable of manufacturing industrially relevant quantities of aerospace grade carbon fibre. The facility enables scientists to conduct research into the chemical, mechanical and nano-scale characteristics of new carbon fibre materials produced on site. There is a strong focus on evaluating these new carbon fibre products in composite materials, particularly composites cured using out-of-autoclave techniques. This paper will present an overview of the vision for Carbon Nexus as well as the technical capabilities of both the laboratory scale single tow line and the larger pilot line capable of producing up to 50 tons of carbon fibre per year. Both lines are fully operational and able to convert a range of polymer precursors into carbon fibre. They are representative of world's best practice for carbon fibre manufacturing methods and well suited to conducting energy efficiency studies. Highlights from recent research projects will focus on the effect of the surface treatment and sizing of carbon fibre on fibre-matrix adhesion in composite materials. In addition to this, results from studies of the effect of varying processing parameters on the structure and properties of oxidised polyacrylonitrile and carbon fibre will also be presented.
