While advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have numerous advantages for the automotive industry, they can be susceptible to interfacial fracture when spot-welded. In this study, the susceptibility of interfacial fracture to spot-weld microstructure and hardness is examined, as well as the corresponding relationships between fatigue, overload performance, and interfacial fracture for a TRIP (transformation induced plasticity) steel. Simple post-weld heat-treatments were used to alter the weld microstructure. The effect on interfacial fracture of diluting the weld pool by welding the TRIP material to non-TRIP steel was examined, along with the effect of altering the base material microstructure. Results show that weld hardness is not a good indicator of either the susceptibility to interfacial fracture, or the strength of the joint, and that interfacial fracture does not necessarily lead to a decrease in strength compared to conventional weld-failure mechanisms, i.e. button pullout. It was also found that while interfacial fracture does affect low cycle to failure behavior, there was no effect on high cycle fatigue.

Similar and dissimilar butt joint welds comprising combinations of commercially pure grade 4 titanium (CP-Ti), Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) and Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr (Ti-5553) were created using the electron beam process. The resultant welds were studied by means of metallography, optical microscopy, mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical testing was performed on welded samples to study the joint integrity and fracture characteristics. A scanning electron microscope investigation was performed on the fracture surface to reveal their fracture modes. While all weldments were crack free and most weldments exhibited mechanical properties comparable to the base metal, negligible ductility was exhibited during tensile testing joints of Ti- 5553 welded to either Ti-64 or Ti-5553.

Summary: This paper examines the adult learning dimensions of protestors as they participate in a campaign to stop coal seam gas exploration in Gippsland in Central Victoria, Australia. On a global level, the imposition of coal seam gas exploration by governments and mining companies has been the trigger for movements of resistance from environmental groups. They are concerned about the impact of mining on their land, food and water supplies. In central Gippsland a group of ‘circumstantial activists’ comprised of farmers, tree changers and other local residents are campaigning against coal seam gas exploration. This unlikely coalition of environmental action groups has made effective use of a variety of community education strategies. This paper commences by outlining some of the key literature on learning and activism drawing on the education tradition of adult learning. We then draw on key concepts from Bourdieu’s writing on ‘habitus’ and ‘field’ to analyse the data from this research. We outline some of the learning practices of activists; through their involvement in this campaign, and the knowledge and skills they gain as they develop a feel for the game of protest. We argue circumstantial activists learn both formally and informally in the social environment of campaigning. Of particular interest is the role of more experienced activists from Friends of the Earth (FOE), a non-government organisation (NGO), as they pass on knowledge, experience, tactics and strategies to the novice and less experienced activists in this community campaign. We explore some of the contradictions of the protestors’ identification as activists using Bourdieu’s concepts of ‘doxa’ and ‘Ilusio’. The paper concludes by arguing learning in activism is a rich tradition of adult education and practice. However, Bourdieu’s writing on field and habitus makes an added contribution to interpreting the learning that occurs in the social space of a campaign or social movement.

Using renewable energy sources for onsite cogeneration from structural building elements is a relatively new concept and is gaining considerable interest. In this study the design, development, manufacturing and testing of a novel building integrated photovoltaic/thermal (BIPVT) solar energy cogeneration system is discussed.

Adhesives (ADH), resistance seam welding (RSW) and autoclaving (ATC) were identified as the most appropriate for fabricating BIPVT roofing panels. Of these manufacturing methods ADH was found to be most suitable for low volume production systems due to its low capital cost.

A prototype panel, fabricated using ADH methods, exhibited good thermal performance. It was also shown that BIPVT performance could be theoretically predicted using a one dimensional heat transfer model and showed excellent agreement with experimental data. The model was used to suggest further design improvements. Finally, a transient simulation of the BIPVT was performed in TRNSYS and is used to illustrate the benefits of the system.

An experimental investigation of the shear strengths of composite plate girders, with centrally placed rectangular web cutouts, is described. A series of tests is conducted on short‐span girders having conventional welded stud shear connectors, connecting the composite concrete slabs to the top flanges of the plate girders. These tests indicated that it is the tensile or pullout capacity of the connectors that is primarily responsible for sustaining the composite action under predominantly shear loading. Subsequently, a further series of tests is conducted on short‐span girders with bolted tension connectors, designed to offer negligible resistance to horizontal shear forces at the interfaces between the concrete slabs and plate girders, which confirmed the previous conclusion. Both series of tests indicate that if adequate connectors are provided between a plate girder and a composite concrete slab, the shear strength of the composite girder is significantly higher than that of the plate girder alone. A simple analytical model for predicting the shear strengths of composite plate girders is also presented, which shows satisfactory correlation with the test results.

Roll forming of ultra-high strength steels (UHSS) and other high strength alloys is an advanced manufacturing methodology with the ability of cold forming those materials to complex three-dimensional shapes for lightweight structural applications. Due to their high strength, most of these materials have a reduced ductility which excludes conventional sheet forming methods under cold forming conditions. Roll forming is possible due to its low strains and incremental forming characteristic. Recent research investigates the development of high strength nano-structured aluminum sheet and titanium alloys, as well as their behaviour in roll forming with regard to formability, material behaviour and shape defects. The development of new materials is often limited to small scale samples due to the high preparation costs. In contrast, industrial application needs larger scale tests for validation, especially in roll forming where a minimum sheet length is required to feed the sample trough the roll forming machine. This work describes a novel technique for studying roll forming of a short length of experimental material. DP780 steel strips (500mm – 1300mm length) were welded between two mild steel carrier sheets of similar width and thickness giving an overall strip length of 2m. Roll forming trials were performed and longitudinal edge strain, bow and springback determined on the welded samples and samples formed of full length DP780 strip before and after cut off. The experimental results of this work show that this method gives a reasonable approach for predicting material behavior in roll forming transverse to the rolling direction. In contrast to that significant differences in longitudinal bow were observed between the welded sections and the sections formed of full length DP780 strip; this indicates that the applicability of this method is limited with regard to predicting longitudinal material behavior in roll forming.
