Multicomponent signals are made up of interacting elements that generate a functional signaling unit. The interactions between signal components and their effects on individual fitness are not well understood, and the effect of environment is even less so. It is usually assumed that color patterns appear the same in all light environments and that the effects of each color are additive. Using guppies, Poecilia reticulata, we investigated the effect of water color on the interactions between components of sexually selected male coloration. Through behavioral mate choice trials in four different water colors, we estimated the attractiveness of male color patterns, using multivariate fitness estimates and overall signal contrast. Our results show that females exhibit preferences that favor groups of colors rather than individual colors independently and that each environment favors different color combinations. We found that these effects are consistent with female guppies selecting entire color patterns on the basis of overall visual contrast. This suggests that both individuals and populations inhabiting different light environments will be subject to divergent, multivariate selection. Although the appearance of color patterns changes with light environment, achromatic components change little, suggesting that these could function in species recognition or other aspects of communication that must work across environments. Consequently, we predict different phylogenetic patterns between chromatic and achromatic signals within the same clades.

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to automatically generate both watercolor painting and pencil sketch drawing, or binary image of contour, from realism-style photo by using DBSCAN color clustering based on HSV color space. While the color clusters produced by proposed methods help to create watercolor painting, the noise pixels are useful to generate the pencil sketch drawing. Moreover, noise pixels are reassigned to color clusters by a novel algorithm to refine the contour in the watercolor painting. The main goal of this paper is to inspire non-professional artists' imagination to produce traditional style painting easily by only adjusting a few parameters. Also, another contribution of this paper is to propose an easy method to produce the binary image of contour, which is a vice product when mining image data by DBSCAN clustering. Thus the binary image is useful in resource limited system to reduce data but keep enough information of images. © 2007 IEEE.

The growth of nanotube films can have important applications in building nanoscale functional devices or solving interfacial and heat problems. We report that high-density boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) films with any desired pattern can be grown on complicated surfaces using a boron (B) ink process. The special B ink, a mixture of nanosized B particles, metal nitrate and ethanol, is first painted, sprayed or inkjet printed at the desired location with required pattern, and then the ink layer is annealed in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere to form BNNT film. This is the first method capable of growing BNNTs on complex non-flat surfaces, which greatly broadens the potential application of BNNTs. For example, it is demonstrated here that a BNNT coated steel mesh can separate water and oil on a microlitre scale; a needle given an internal BNNT coating could greatly enhance microfluidic transport; and a coated screw could be used to minimize wear at the interface.

The chemiluminescence from four cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes containing an ancillary bathophenanthroline-disulfonate ligand exhibited a wide range of emission colours (green to red), and in some cases intensities that are far greater than the commonly employed benchmark reagent, [Ru(bpy)3](2+). A similar complex incorporating a sulfonated triazolylpyridine-based ligand enabled the emission to be shifted into the blue region of the spectrum, but the responses with this complex were relatively poor. DFT calculations of electronic structure and emission spectra support the experimental findings.

The monitoring of lead (II) ions (Pb(2+)) in water is essential for both human health and the environment. Herein, a simple yet innovative biosensor for Pb(2+) detection is presented. The sensor is developed by the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) core-satellite structure using naturally occurring tripeptide glutathione (GSH) as linker. The addition of Pb(2+) caused a red-to-blue color change and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band was shifted to ca. 650nm. The limit of detection (LOD) is found to be 47.6nM (9.9ppb) by UV-vis spectroscopy with high selectivity against other heavy metals. This method offers a new strategy for heavy metal detection using functionalized GNPs.

Incorporating phenylpyridine- and triazolylpyridine-based ligands decorated with methylsulfonate or tetraethylene glycol (TEG) groups, a series of iridium(III) complexes has been created for green and blue electrogenerated chemiluminescence under analytically useful aqueous conditions, with tri-n-propylamine as a coreactant. The relative electrochemiluminescence (ECL) intensities of the complexes were dependent on the sensitivity of the photodetector over the wavelength range and the pulse time of the applied electrochemical potential. In terms of the integrated area of corrected ECL spectra, with a pulse time of 0.5 s, the intensities of the Ir(III) complexes were between 18 and 102 % that of [Ru(bpy)3 ](2+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine). However, when the intensities were measured with a typical bialkali photomultiplier tube, the signal of the most effective blue emitter, [Ir(df-ppy)2 (pt-TEG)](+) (df-ppy=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine anion, pt-TEG=1-(2-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)-4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole), was over 1200 % that of the orange-red emitter [Ru(bpy)3 ](2+) . A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the Ir(III) complexes indicated that the greater intensity from [Ir(df-ppy)2 (pt-TEG)](+) relative to those of the other Ir(III) complexes resulted from a combination of many factors, rather than being significantly favored in one area.

We examine [Ir(df-ppy)2(pt-TEG)](+) as the first highly water soluble, blue-luminescent iridium(iii) complex for chemiluminescence detection. Marked differences in selectivity were observed between the new complex and the conventional [Ru(bpy)3](2+) reagent, which will enable this mode of detection to be extended to new areas of application.

Wool is a textile material that is valued for its strength, warmth, water resistance, and texture. But this natural fiber of the protein keratin lacks the stain resistance of synthetic fabrics and is also generally susceptible to harsh processing conditions. In this study, raw and oxidized wool fabrics were treated with nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) powder in an ultrasonic bath. These particles were linked to the wool surface by butane tetra carboxylic acid and also sodium hypophosphite was used as a catalyst. The photo-catalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on the wool fabrics was followed by the degradation of Acid Blue 113 as a stain and also determined by the degradation rate of food stains such as coffee, tea, and fruit juice under the ultraviolet rays. The results showed that increasing the amount of nano TiO2 leads to improved degradation of stains on the treated fabric.
