Numerical modeling of a two-dimensional elastic body containing multiple voids/cracks to study the interaction between these defects can be  significantly simplified by developing special finite elements, each containing an internal circular/elliptic hole or a slit crack. These finite elements are developed using complex potentials and the conformal mapping technique. The elements developed can be divided into two categories, namely, the semi-analytic-type and hybrid-type elements. The latter element type is an improved version of the former due to the implementation of displacement continuity along the inter-element boundary. All the proposed elements can be easily combined with the conventional displacement elements, such as isoparametric elements, to analyze the above-mentioned problems without using complicated finite element meshes. Numerical examples have been employed to illustrate the modeling of voids/cracks and their interactions. The results obtained using the semi-analytic-type elements are in good agreement with the theoretical results, and the corresponding results obtained using the hybrid-type elements show an improvement of the agreement with the theoretical results. However, the former element type is much easier to construct.

Voids are one of the most significant defects found within composites and have been demonstrated to reduce the performance of composite structures. The understanding of the impact of the size and distribution of voids on laminate properties is still limited because voids have proven difficult to deliberately control. This study aims to understand the mechanisms by which voids are generated within out-of-autoclave cured laminates. In this study, a process of prepreg conditioning was developed to control the level of voids within test laminates. Non-conditioned laminates highlighted signs of void growth (1.5%), while conditioned laminates showed consistently low levels of voids (<0.3%). Mass spectrometry indicated higher levels of aqueous and solvent volatiles within the non-conditioned prepreg. Finally, Mode II fracture testing revealed a 21% improvement in toughness for the non-voided laminates. A model on the effect of voids within the Mode II stress state has also been proposed.

Through the International Energy Agency (lEA) Task-31 Daylighting in the 21 st Century a subtask has been organized to undertake the development of a Daylighting Design Roadmap. This project will attempt to unfold a path as to how we may approach and provide support for daylighting at the various project stages of a design. Although this roadmap is in its preliminary stages, the authors have examined several case studies of daylighting projects. This paper outlines an initial overview of a daylighting design roadmap by reflecting on several aspects of the case studies. An attempt is made to provide reasonable guidance of parameters which could be analyzed at various stages in a project. The roadmap gives reference to several design tools and simulation programs acknowledging that the process can be selective in targeting results to particular circumstances. Voids of information and methodology in the construction of the daylighting roadmap, at this stage in the project, are also acknowledged. It is expected that this initial paper on the subject, will provide awareness and hopefully generate a contribution from other experts in the field.

Magnesium and its alloys do not in general undergo the same extended range of plasticity as their competitor structural metals. The present work presents part II of a study that examines some of the roles deformation twinning might play in the phenomenon. A series of tensile and compression tests results are reported for common wrought alloys: AZ31, ZK60 and ZM20. These data are combined with EBSD analysis and simple flow stress models to argue the following: (i) that “contraction” double twinning (which enables contraction along the c axis) can decrease the uniform elongation, and (ii) that compression double twinning can also account for shear failure at low strains. The last of these is described as a combined consequence of strain softening of the continuum and the local generation of twin sized voids.

By reaction of Zn(CH3COO)2 with p,p′-diphenylmethylenediphosphinic acid in water a new inorganic–organic polymeric hybrid of formula [Zn(CH2(P(Ph)O2)2)] has been synthesized and completely characterized. The X-ray analysis established that the structure consists of 2D-layered polymeric array, the 2D-sheets being built up through strong covalent linkages between the zinc metal and the oxygen donors of the phenylphosphinate ligand. The 2D-layers, which are featuring a mesh-net fashion, present voids of various dimensionality, up to 24-membered rings. The organic parts of the hybrid ligand, namely the phenyl rings, are shielding the inorganic skeleton of the layers, preventing the propagation of the polymer in the third dimension. No water molecules are present in the lattice, both of coordination and crystallization. Crystal data are: monoclinic, P21Ic, a=11.840(2), b=9.646(9), c=12.516(5) Å, β=95.03(2), V=1423.9(15) Å3, Z=4. The solid material has been characterized by 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.

Little attention has been paid to the possibility that soil water repellency could enhance non-equilibrium water flow and solute transport through macropores present in structured clay soils. In this study, we measured infiltration and solute transport in a clay soil under near-saturated conditions in both the field using tension infiltrometers and in the laboratory on undisturbed soil columns. Measurements were made on adjacent plots under grass and continuous arable cultivation. Steady-state field infiltration rates measured using water and ethanol as the infiltrating fluids demonstrated that the soil macroporosity under grass was better developed, but that much of the structural pore system was inactive due to water repellency. No water repellency was detected on the arable plot disturbed by tillage. Dye tracing showed that the conducting macroporosity was largely comprised of earthworm channels in the grassed plot and inter-aggregate voids resulting from ploughing in the arable plot. Tracer breakthrough curves measured on field-dry soil indicated rapid macropore transport in columns taken from both plots, although the degree of non-equilibrium transport appeared somewhat stronger under grass. This result, which was attributed to water repellency, was also consistent with the larger flow-weighted mean pore size found in the field infiltration experiments. It is concluded that water repellency in undisturbed structured clay soils can have significant effects on the occurrence of non-equilibrium water and solute transport in macropores.

Tensile testing of rolled AZ31 alloy with a mean grain size of 80 μm reveals localization and failure prior to diffuse necking. Optical microscopy reveals that failure is caused by voids that have formed within twins. A simple localization criterion is proposed that captures the role of grain size in the effect. Such early failure is only predicted for coarse grain sizes, in line with observation.

The present work is concerned with gaining a better understanding of the factors that control the ductility of wrought magnesium alloys. The ultimate aim is to develop alloys with vastly improved room temperature formability. It is shown that 3D tomography of fractured tensile specimens reveals disk shaped voids aligned more or less at 45 deg. to the tensile axis. These voids are consistent with twin induced void formation. It is also shown that the double twins that produce such voids form in contradiction to Schmid predictions. Finally, it is demonstrated that low levels of rare-earth additions leads to vastly improved texture and ductility in extrusions, as they do in rolled sheet.

An out-of-autoclave rapid heating/low pressure technique has been used to cure polyethersulfone (PES) toughened HexPly 8552. Mode I and mode II tests were conducted to evaluate the fracture toughness of the composites and the effectiveness of cure was determined through thermal analysis. When compared to the autoclave process, the out-of-autoclave process resulted in a 52% reduction in processing time, without any sacrifice to the matrix intrinsic properties. Thermal analysis indicated an 8 °C improvement in glass transition temperature (Tg) as a result of an increased degree of cure. The out-of-autoclave process did lack in the ability to facilitate the removal of porosity which affected the fracture toughness results. The porosity is believed to have increased the mode I propagation fracture toughness. However its effect on mode II was quite deleterious, shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study managed to identify a number of key parameters associated with the out-of-autoclave process essential for further optimisation.

Nanofibres having a parallel line surface texture were electrospun from cellulose acetate butyrate solutions using a solvent mixture of acetone and N,N'-dimethylacetamide. The formation mechanism of the unusual surface feature was explored and attributed to the formation of voids on the jet surface at the early stage of electrospinning and subsequent elongation and solidification of the voids into a line surface structure. The fast evaporation of a highly volatile solvent, acetone, from the polymer solution was found to play a key role in the formation of surface voids, while the high viscosity of the residual solution after the solvent evaporation ensured the line surface to be maintained after the solidification. Based on this principle, nanofibres having a similar surface texture were also electrospun successfully from other polymers, such as cellulose acetate, polyvinylidene fluoride, poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene), either from the same or from different solvent systems. Polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the polymer molecular orientation within nanofibres. Schwann cells were grown on both aligned and randomly oriented nanofibre mats. The parallel line surface texture assisted in the growth of Schwann cells especially at the early stage of cell culture regardless of the fibre orientation. In contrast, the molecular orientation within nanofibres showed little impact on the cell growth.

We have demonstrated that polystyrene (PS) nanofibers having an ordered surface line texture can be produced on a large scale from a PS solution of acetone and N,N′-dimethylformamide (2/1, vol/vol) by a needleless electrospinning technique using a disc as fiber generator. The formation of the unusual surface feature was investigated and attributed to the voids formed on the surface of jets due to the fast evaporation of acetone at the early stage of electrospinning, and subsequent elongation and solidification turning the voids into ordered lines on fiber surface. In comparison with the nanofibers electrospun by a conventional needle electrospinning using the same solution, the disc electrospun fibers were finer with similar diameter distribution. The fiber production rate for the disc electrospinning was 62 times higher than that of the conventional electrospinning. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the PS nanofibers produced from the two electrospinning techniques showed no significant difference in chemical component, albeit slightly higher crystallinity in the disc spun nanofibers.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of a low carbon Si–Mn steel with ferrite/bainite dual–phase structure were investigated by thermo–mechanical controlled process (TMCP). The results showed that the curves of the instantaneous work–hardening factor n* value versus true strain ε are made up with three stages during uniform plastic deformation: n* value is relatively higher at stage I, decreases slowly with ε in stage II, and then decreases quickly with ε in stage III. Compared tothe equiaxed ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel, the quasi–polygonal ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel shows higher tensile strength and n*value in the low strain region. The voids or micro–cracks formed not only at ferrite–bainite interfaces but also within ferrite grains in the necked region, which can improve the property of resistance to crack propagation by reducing local stress concentration of the crack tips.

Poly(triazine imide) with intercalation of lithium and chloride ions (PTI/Li+Cl−) was synthesized by temperature-induced condensation of dicyandiamide in a eutectic mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride as solvent. By using this ionothermal approach the well-known problem of insufficient crystallinity of carbon nitride (CN) condensation products could be overcome. The structural characterization of PTI/Li+Cl− resulted from a complementary approach using spectroscopic methods as well as different diffraction techniques. Due to the high crystallinity of PTI/Li+Cl− a structure solution from both powder X-ray and electron diffraction patterns using direct methods was possible; this yielded a triazine-based structure model, in contrast to the proposed fully condensed heptazine-based structure that has been reported recently. Further information from solid-state NMR and FTIR spectroscopy as well as high-resolution TEM investigations was used for Rietveld refinement with a goodness-of-fit (χ2) of 5.035 and wRp=0.05937. PTI/Li+Cl− (P63cm (no. 185); a=846.82(10), c=675.02(9) pm) is a 2D network composed of essentially planar layers made up from imide-bridged triazine units. Voids in these layers are stacked upon each other forming channels running parallel to [001], filled with Li+ and Cl− ions. The presence of salt ions in the nanocrystallites as well as the existence of sp2-hybridized carbon and nitrogen atoms typical of graphitic structures was confirmed by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy investigations using 15N-labeled PTI/Li+Cl− proved the absence of heptazine building blocks and NH2 groups and corroborated the highly condensed, triazine-based structure model.

A macroscopic ductile fracture criterion is proposed based on micro-mechanism analysis of nucleation, growth and shear coalescence of voids from experimental observation of fracture surfaces. The proposed ductile fracture model endows a changeable cut-off value for the stress triaxiality to represent effect of micro-structures, the Lode parameter, temperature, and strain rate on ductility of metals. The proposed model is used to construct fracture loci of AA 2024- T351. The constructed fracture loci are compared with experimental data covering wide stress triaxiality ranging between –0.5 and 1.0. The comparison suggests that the proposed model can provide a satisfactory prediction of ductile fracture for metals from compressive upsetting tests to plane strain tension with slanted fracture surfaces. Moreover, it is expected that the proposed model reasonably describes ductile fracture behavior in high velocity perforation simulation since a reasonable cut-off value for the stress triaxiality is coupled with the proposed ductile fracture criterion.
