The Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY) is a widely used summary measure of population health combining years of life lost due to mortality and years of healthy life lost due to disability. A feature of the DALY is that, in the assessment of morbidity, each health condition is associated with a disability weight. The disability weight lies on a scale between 0 (indicating the health condition is equivalent to full health) and 1 (indicating the health condition is equivalent to death). The disability weight associated with each health condition is currently fixed across all social, cultural and environmental contexts. Thus blindness in the United Kingdom has the same disability weight as blindness in Niger in spite of structural interventions in the UK that make the disability less severe than in Niger. Although the fixed disability weight is defended on grounds that it supports a strongly egalitarian flavour in the DALY, we argue that the lack of consideration of realistic contexts results in a measure that will underestimate the burden associated with morbidity in disadvantaged populations and overestimate the burden in advantaged populations. There is, consequently, a loss of information on possible non-clinical points of intervention. Disaggregated estimates of the burden of disease such as those in the World Health Report 2000 should be interpreted with caution.

It is shown that there are no purely magnetic, vacuum, spacetime metrics where any one of the following conditions holds: (a) the ratio of any two eigenvalues of the Weyl tensor is constant, (b) both of the Riemann principal null directions, defining the time-like blade, are nonrotating, (c) the shear tensor possesses an eigenvector va which is defined by one of the space-like Riemann principal directions, (d) the vorticity is parallel to va, where va is defined by one of the space-like Riemann principal directions.

Amorphous 55Mg35NilOSi alloy powder has been synthesized by mechanical alloying technique using pure Mg, Ni and Si elemental powders. The transformation of the crystalline powders into an amorphous one has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The new material produced has a higher thermal stability than reported results, which is beneficial to the fabrication of Mg-Ni-Si bulk amorphous components through powder metallurgy.

A series of three experiments were conducted with second cross ([Merino×Border Leicester]×Poll Dorset) wether lambs to evaluate the effects of dietary treatments on manipulation of muscle long-chain (LC) omega-3 fatty acids (FA) on the color stability and oxidative stability of fresh and vacuum packaged lamb. At the end of 7-, 6- and 6-week experimental periods for experiments (Exp.) 1–3 respectively, lambs were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. At 24 h post-mortem, muscle longissimus lumborum (LL) and longissimus thoracis (LT) were removed and evaluated for color and lipid oxidative stability under specified commercial storage and display condition. Of the dietary supplements used, fish meal and fish oil moderately (P<0.01) and markedly (P<0.001) increased muscle omega-3 FA content, while both protected canola seed (P<0.001) and protected sunflower meal protein significantly (P<0.02) increased muscle omega-6 FA content or ratio of omega-6/omega-3 of the longissimus muscle. In all experiments, the substantial increase (P<0.001) in muscle LC omega-3 and omega-6 FA had no consistent significant effect on color values (redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*)) for fresh and vacuum packaged lamb over a 6-day display period. Lipid oxidation, determined by the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) indicated the enrichment of muscle polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels in lambs did not produce significant differences resulting either from main treatment effects or for treatment×day×type interactions (where type was fresh and vacuum packaged). Present results demonstrated the color and lipid oxidative stability of lamb longissimus muscle during refrigerated display was not affected by enhanced levels of omega-3 and omega-6 FA due to dietary treatments.

This paper aims to identify current practice responses to the housing and support needs of people with high, complex or changing support needs. Case studies of current housing dilemmas and responses were provided by Annecto and Scope (Vic), and included data about the responses of other providers known to these agencies. The paper will first present case study data in three categories of accommodation: living independently (ie. living alone in self-rented or self-owned housing with or without formal support); living without a home (ie. living in non permanent or non secure housing); and living in the parental home and planning for change. The case studies are followed by a discussion of the key response strategies evident in each, and an analysis of significant ‘lessons’ for policy.

Single bubble injection simulations inside a minimally fluidized bed have been studied widely and are often used to validate the accuracy of different numerical models. Bubble shape, size and voidage distribution are the important parameters that are validated from the experiments. In the present work, the most widely used drag model (Gidaspow’s drag model) is compared to a new proposed slip flow drag model which takes into account the presence of the slip flow regime, often encountered in vacuum fluidized beds and characterised by Knudsen no. (Kn). Shape and size prediction of the bubble evolution inside the bed is carried out numerically by using the two fluid model, comparing the results predicted by the drag models. It is seen that the predictions are different for the two drag models only under high vacuum conditions corresponding to Kn in slip/transition flow regime. The predictions are also found sensitive to pressure gradient in the bed and fluid velocity.

The electrochemistry of decamethylferrocene (DmFc) has been studied in organic solvent systems and proven to be a superior internal reference redox standard to ferrocene (Fc). However, the electrochemical information on this redox couple in ionic liquids is still limited. Therefore, the voltammetric and amperometric behaviour of DmFc was investigated under argon and vacuum conditions in six different ionic liquids and compared to that of Fc under the same experimental conditions. Consequently, the concentration, the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant (k0), volatility, and diffusion coefficients (D) of Fc and Fc+, as well as the solubility, k 0, and D values for DmFc and DmFc+ were determined under argon and vacuum conditions by fitting the experimental chronoamperometric and voltammetric data with numerical and digital simulations. The rate of mass transport of ferrocene and decamethylferrocene was observed to decreases between 6-37% by changing the working atmosphere from argon to vacuum. The D Fc/DFc+ ratios are in the range 1.31-2.01 in the different ILs. Importantly, the DDmFc/DDmFc+ ratio is ≈ 1 in 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, 1-methyl-1-butylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate, and 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate. The experimental mid-point potential and half-wave potential of Fc0/+ vs. DmFc0/+, as well as the formal potential obtained after correction for inequality in the respective diffusion coefficients of both redox processes are presented. Even though DmFc is not freely soluble in the different ILs, the results presented in this work suggest that the DmFc0/+ redox process is less dependent than Fc on the IL nature. This is a very relevant finding for the application of this transition-metal sandwich complex as an internal reference redox system in IL solutions. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Vacuum fluidised beds have a distinct advantage of being operated with reduced mass consumption of the fluidising media. However, a low quality of fluidisation reduces the opportunity to utilise the bubbling regime in vacuum fluidised beds. Fluidisation maps are often used to depict the interface between the quiescent, bubbling and slugging regimes inside a fluidised bed. Such maps have been obtained by visual observations of the fluidisation interface in transparent fluidised beds. For beds which are visually inaccessible fluidisation maps are difficult to obtain. The present work therefore attempts to model the interface travel in a vacuum fluidised bed. The pressure gradient due to the bed weight has been determined to be a main contributor for fluidisation/defluidisation under vacuum. A simple analytical model based on the pressure gradient (PG model) is developed to predict the interface location in a vacuum fluidised bed. For a segregated bed, the Gibilaro-Rowe (GR) model is modified and used to predict the jetsam layer growth along with the fluidisation interface. The predictions are compared with the experimental data for minimally and highly segregated particles and it is seen that for non-segregated powders the predictions are quite accurate. Lack of sufficient knowledge of bubble characteristics, however, impeded accurate prediction of the jetsam growth especially at high flow rates. However, an approximate complete fluidisation interface is successfully predicted using the GR-PG model. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
