Developing effective advertising self-regulation in Australia: reflections on the old and new systems

This paper reviews these systems using a macro framework for analysis which contextualises advertising in society. The systems have the fundamental process of handling complaints about advertising in common, however there are advantages and disadvantages of each and these are discussed. Important insights for the development of regulation of advertising are presented together with critical implications for the future of the industry.

The prevalence and selected characteristics of non-fatal opioid overdoses attended by ambulance in Australia

Key Points
1. Ambulance attendance at non-fatal opioid overdose is a common event in mainland Australia (among heroin users in particular).
2. The monthly rate of non-fatal opioid overdose attended by ambulance was generally highest in Victoria (Melbourne) followed by NSW with the rates substantially lower in the remaining mainland states over the period Jan  1999 - Feb 2001.
3. Non-fatal opioid overdose victims were most likely to be male in all states with the proportion of males highest in Victoria (77%).
4. Non-fatal opioid overdose victims were aged around 28 years with ages lowest in WA (26) and highest in NSW (30).
5. The rates of transportation varied according to ambulance service practice across the states with around 94% of cases transported in WA and around 19% and 30% of cases transported in Melbourne and NSW respectively.

Environmental attitudes and their relation to the dominant social paradigm among university students in New Zealand and Australia

This paper develops a causal model of environmental attitudes using measures of the dominant social paradigm of Western industrial societies. Four components of the DSP framework are examined with regard to environmental attitudes and perception of change using a sample of university students from Australia and New Zealand. The results indicate that one’s belief in the DSP has a negative effect on both environmental attitudes and perception of change necessary to ameliorate degradation of the environment. Thus, while public policy favors increasing awareness of and interest in the environment, policy instruments may remain ineffective in producing lasting change if the components of the DSP remain unchanged. It is argued that public policy ought to be directed at changing the DSP so that its negative effects will be minimized.

Journal rankings : does one size fit all?

The question of ranking journals, institutions, individual academics and specific papers is regularly visited within business and management disciplines. The Mort, et al. (2004) study advances the discussion by examining this theme within the context of academic marketing in Australia and New Zealand. In this commentary I comment on three aspects of the study that are left partially unanswered: why rank journals in the first place, how should journals be evaluated, and to what extent are the aspirations of academics in the region met?
