The transport of water and ions across mimicked nanotube membranes with pseudo atoms is studied using molecular dynamics simulations under equilibrium conditions and hydrostatic pressure. Different pore surface properties are constructed by assigning partial charges on the sites of specified atoms to explore the influence of charges and polarity. The energetics of water and ion transports through the nanopores was calculated to evaluate their filterability to water. The simulation results show that the free energy barriers to water and ion conductions much depend on the charges at the pore entrance and the dipole within the pore. The membranes with hydrophobic pores and negatively charged entrances would be very efficient in the water transport and ion rejection. The charges and dipoles of the pore wall and the aligned dipoles of water molecules in the pore can create a significant force on ions.

This paper explores the collection and collecting activity of the Hawke’s Bay Ph ilosophical Institute of Napier, New Zealand. It examines the development of the Institute’s museum and considers the motivations, intentions and interests of the collectors and their activity within the broader scientific and museum context. The work of two significant collectors is examined in detail: William Colenso, FLS, FRS, missionary, explorer and enthusiastic botanist, who engaged in over fifty years of correspondence and botanical exchange with Sir Joseph Hooker at Kew Gardens; and Augustus Hamilton, the curator of the museum who later became Director of New Zealand’s national collection at the Colonial Museum in Wellington. Through consideration of the Institute’s activities during the period 1874 to 1899, it is proposed that within the collection, the emergence of a distinct local identity can be discerned, during the early colonial period of Hawke’s Bay.

Offline handwritten recognition is an important automated process in pattern recognition and computer vision field. This paper presents an approach of polar coordinate-based handwritten recognition system involving Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification methodology to achieve high recognition performance. We provide comparison and evaluation for zoning feature extraction methods applied in Polar system. The recognition results we proposed were trained and tested by using SVM with a set of 650 handwritten character images. All the input images are segmented (isolated) handwritten characters. Compared with Cartesian based handwritten recognition system, the recognition rate is more stable and improved up to 86.63%.

We propose a combined character separation and recognition approach for low-resolution images of alphanumeric text. By synthesising the image formation process a set of low-resolution templates is created for each character. Cluster algorithms and normalised cross-correlation are then applied to match these templates and thereby allowing both character separation and recognition to be achieved at the same time. Thus characters are recognised using their low-resolution appearance only without applying image enhancement methods. Experiments showed that this approach is able to recognise low-resolution alphanumeric text of down to 5 pixels in size.

Offline handwritten recognition is more challenging as indicated by the recognition technologies. This study demonstrates significantly higher rates recognition when compared with other comparable studies. In this paper, we present a circular grid zoning method applied on Polar transformation recognition system. It compares the circular grid zoning (CGZ) and standard zoning (SZ) feature extraction method on Polar and Cartesian coordinate system. We report recognition rates of 92.3%, which are considerably higher than previous studies of zoning based Polar transformation system (86.6%) and zoning based Cartesian recognition system (80.6%). Based on the finding, we propose that our circular grid zoning based Polar transformation system may provide improved classification rates for complex offline handwritten recognition.

The problem of automatic face recognition (AFR) concerns matching a detected (roughly localized) face against a database of known faces with associated identities. This task, although very intuitive to humans and despite the vast amounts of research behind it, still poses a significant challenge to computer-based methods. For reviews of the literature and commercial state-of-the-art see [21, 372] and [252, 253]. Much AFR research has concentrated on the user authentication paradigm (e.g. [10, 30, 183]). In contrast, we consider the content-based multimedia retrieval setup: our aim is to retrieve, and rank by confidence, film shots based on the presence of specific actors. A query to the system consists of the user choosing the person of interest in one or more keyframes.
